MIXCSR VS. REALITY

11 for 12 yet again (160 of 174). The exception this time was a Riverview Gabriel Richard boys squad that earned their first team qualifier since 2021. The Pioneers were undoubtedly helped by Theodore Campbell, who’d only raced twice over the past six weeks. In just his fifth race of the season, he laid down a personal best. Rich Fanti wasn’t on that 2021 outfit, but he’s now able to relate to what they felt. He earned his 2^nd straight Regional Top-10, but this time he’ll get to train with his team for the next week.

Managing the Hansons Running Shop in Royal Oak, I’ve grown a bit more attuned to how the Royal Oak program operates. After team qualifiers from 2019 to 2021, a bit of a lull was hit and changes were needed within the program. Those changes hit the ground this summer and the results have come in the fall. Faced with a bit of adversity on race morning, these girls pressed and responded with a narrowww qualifier. Coming down to the sixth runner, Aiyana Wyman was able to muster a 21:50, her third sub-22 of the year.

Individually, I’m in awe of Raley Keith, whose emergence now gives the Lancers three legitimate All-State candidates. There’s a good chance that in a few days, OCS has the lowest score through three girls. Taken the leap as a sophomore has been Musa Kay, turning a low-17 PR into a 16:20. On Saturday, he didn’t match that time, but there’s another comparison he overwhelmingly matched. 33^rd here last year to 3^rd this year.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

11 for 12 on teams (now 149 of 162), with one miss, the Union City Girls. The Chargers had solid odds of making it to State (41%), considerably lesser odds for winning the region. Parker Williams was a major catalyst for the victory. The sophomore in her first year of XC has whittled away her race times all year. A majority of her September races were above 24:00, her final three have all been sub-22.

Beyond Union City, some individuals that had a great race on Saturday:

Leah McPartlin, Marshall – just gradually moving up the regional ranks until she popped a state qualifier. 30^th in her freshman campaign, 21^st last year, now 9^th. She’s been putting it together in October, all four of her results have been at 21-flat or lower.

Sammy Gamboa, Saugatuck – all season he’s been proving his resilience, Saturday was the pay off. His first time into the 16’s, a feat that we wouldn’t have seen coming in early September.

Owen Saylor, Dowagiac Union – projected 10^th, snapped that in half with a 5^th place finish. In the process outperforming those projections, he grabbed a new lifetime best of 16:12. Just a smidge of improvement from the freshman who never raced under 20:00.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

12 for 12 on the projected top-three teams (now sitting at 138 of 150). Which was to be expected, all but one were heavy favorites. The lone exception was Carleton Airport, led by Courtney Bovair, who’s bookended her regional career with victories here. That 2021 race was a wet and muddy one, but it’s wonderful to see the dramatic improvement since then. And we know there have been many tribulations in that three-year span.

Speaking of spans, the New Boston Huron folks had a lengthy one with regard to qualifying a boys team. More than 45 years, in fact. One of the better tandems in D2, Lucas Kuhn and Luke Dulecki, gave the Chiefs enough of a margin up front to drive Huron to a win.

As a former Jag, I want to recognize Adrianna Zub, who’s been on fire recently. She’s dropped more than two minutes in the past year and after nailing top-5 finishes at Downriver Gabriel Richard and the Downriver League, earned a state qualifier with another mid-20 performance.

Sophomore Maddi Hare has been ascending through October. Going back even further to Jackson, every single race has been a seasonal best. Saturday’s race was the latest iteration of the streak, where he’s moved down to 17:09. I’m glad to see a team qualifier in what’s been a tough year for the Bedford program.
