MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Par for the course, 6 for 6 on the top-three teams. This is a bear of a region, you know those six teams will make serious noise after a long voyage to MIS. I’m currently sitting at 100 of 108 on the predictions, well on pace to break my previous record.

Even though they were predicted to win, I appreciated seeing the upstart Bear Lake-Onekama capture the Regional Championship. You had Addy Zeller, the EXPERIENCED sophomore with her 2nd top-5 regional finish. Callie Sinke, being patient in the process of returning from injury. Melodie Hulinek sticking her nose in the top-10. Big things to come from this program, both in the present and future.

And what about Mason County Eastern vs. Maple City Glen Lake? The Lakers stepped up and gave the Cardinals quite a race. PRs from three of their five scorers, enough to force the 6th runner tiebreaker. It wasn’t enough, Mason County Eastern’s Cy Kosmowski had enough to break the tiebreaker. Wasn’t fast enough for a personal best from Cy, though it was his fastest effort in 1.5 months, which was all that was necessary. These close battles will benefit both teams in six days.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Four regions, eight races, plenty of opportunities to predict the wrong team to not make it. Well, read it and weep, folks. 24 for 24 in nailing the top-3 teams. Now sitting at 94 for 102 overall.

Anyhow, here are some individuals that impressed:

Okay, I wasn’t perfect on all the qualifiers. Jenison’s Girls had to go throw four into the top-20. Which is honestly the best scenario. I would hate for a top-10 Rockford or Grand Haven to stay at home. Now all three teams made it and the Grand Rapids area has a real opportunity of placing four teams into the top-10 in Division 1. Unbelievably, Andrea Schwartz dropped even more time. After running above 20:00 for the majority of her career, she laid down a 19:10 in the OK Green Final, which now turned into a 19:00.

Lexi Gibson, Holland – 21’s for her first three races. 20’s for the next trio. A 19:10 gave her an 8^th place finish in the OK Black. A 19:16 moved her up a spot into 7^th her. I think she’s poised to hold the pattern with another premium performance at State.

Esther Cahill, Saranac – was projected to finish 19^th, not fast enough to qualify, yet still admirable for a freshman. Especially one that opened her career just south of 25:00. Projections didn’t hold here, as Esther placed 9^th, moving onto State.

Mary Riley, St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake Catholic – happy to view that Mary has returned to the form from her sophomore year, where she placed 12^th in this region and received the opportunity to compete in Brooklyn. Her 10^th place yesterday greatly outdid the 30^th from her junior year and gives her another crack at slipping into the 21’s as she did in 2022.

Chase Sherman, Jenison – with Grand Haven placing four Bucs in the top-8, a regional upset was in the making. Jenison’s 3^rd-5^th runners rallied to tie it up and their 6^th, a freshman growing in prominence and importance, sealed the win.

Mason Hill, Allendale – normal runners like you and I might win Allendale’s Runner of the Week and then grow complacent in our abilities. Mason Hill is no normal runner. The sophomore has chopped a minute off his freshman best, half of that coming in the past week.

Landon Madden, Delton-Kellogg – speaking of chopping time, the Delton-Kellogg first year runner began his season well above 21:00. Two months and nearly five minutes faster, he’s ending his season with a chance at shockingly racing into the 16’s.

Alex Morin, Martin – 45^th, 37^th, 28^th. Keeping the pattern going, Alex was probably destined for a 16^th place finish. Some kids thrust forward with dramatic improvement; others slog through a gradual grind. Alex has been in that latter category, but I’m sure it was worth it in the end with his first ever journey to MIS.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Per my last post, the Friday regionals ended in predicting 59 of the 66 possible top-3 teams. Great start again here, 11 of 12, making it 70/78 overall. Both the D2/D3 boys were fairly straightforward. The D2 girls was projected to be close, the D3 girls resulted in quite an upset.

Almont’s Girls gave us that upset, a tight battle with Greenhills that came down to the sixth runner. I love the cases where that tiebreaker is a senior, such as this one with Amanda Fitchett. The Raiders were put in that position by a pair of freshmen that had the best races of their seasons, Melina Campbell and Taylor Stanczak.

Croswell-Lexington’s Girls delivered in what was thought to be a tight competition for 3^rd. The Pioneers benefitted from Eva Thompson’s low stick, then received personal bests from Brynn Hurley, Madelyn Barkley, and Hailey Morrison. Gotta be happy for Hurley, who ran under 20:00 for the first time since the middle of her junior year.

Looking to the future, this Rochester Hills Lutheran NW freshman class could be something. Three qualifiers – the winner in Noel Lorenzen, both Oscar Wordell and Jack Songer dropping PRs to hit individual qualifiers.

We saw in track that he’s got a competitive fire that gets turned up a notch in championship season. Coming into the Region 18 1600m with a personal best of 4:45, Georgio Aramouni busted out a 4:36 for the win. Coming into Columbus County Park having never broken 17:30, he ripped off a 17:12 to place 7^th and give Lamphere its 3^rd straight year with an individual qualifier.
