MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Reality matched the projections, in the exact order as well. But I screwed up and didn’t have the exact point totals. Dang, well now sitting at 33 of the 36 top-three teams.

Slightly less predictable were kids such as:

Nolan Stadel, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes – just a freshman, unafraid of the biggest race of his career. Nearly two months to the date, Nolan raced here at Happy Acres – 20:55. Just over 60 days later, 18:10. Same course, 165 second difference. If we all improved by 2.75 seconds per day, we’d set world records.

Brooke Sonnenberg, Genesee Christian Academy – also has raced here, placing 10th last year with a 21:49. I don’t recall last year’s region having extremely tough conditions (maybe a little warmth?), so her 19:47 from Friday represents a vast improvement.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

D3’s projections were perfect, but to be honest, they were pretty straightforward. D2’s missed two teams, making the grand total now 27/30.

Those two squads were:

Parma Western’s Boys – who didn’t just find their way into the 3rd, but leapt into 2nd. Of course, having Edison Lopeman makes it easier on the rest of the team. Just as he had in track, Ryan Good was able to conjure another level in championship season, rocketing into the 15’s and placing in the top-five. Add in solid performances from the 3rd-5th guys and Parma Western earned a return trip.

Williamston’s Girls – qualifying by a mere four points. One particular spot stood out, 49th through 55th place. Coming in 49th was the Hornets own Jackson Harlan. Only 5 seconds separated her from 55th place. She’s five seconds slower and Williamston is kicking themselves because of a missed opportunity. By the way, her 21:50 was a personal best, more than a minute faster than her 2023 best.

With the frontrunnin’ Pewamo-Westphalia and Central Montcalm squads taking up a majority of the top-15 placings, that led to qualifiers late such as Amelie Bertels, the Bath senior. In her first year of competition, she’s moved from 27+ minute opener into the 21’s. Relying on championship experience was Chesaning’s Jaxon Hemgesberg. Last year, he was able to qualify in 18th place, this year in 17th. He’s quite a bit faster though, running in the 17’s for four of his past five races.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Five of six qualifying squads, bringing the overall total to 17/18. You may ask, who was the lone exception?

Well, a Lake Orion team that greatly benefitted from the return of Blake Peardon. If you followed the summer preview, you may recall he was the first listed kid in the 50 Tickets. Before Friday, I had been wondering what had happened to Blake. 16:22 opener, mid-17’s throughout the middle of September, then nothing. Surely he was out for the season. Mere mortals may have been, Blake was not. There are usually many factors when a team unexpectedly qualifies. There were definitely some others, but Peardon was the main driver. Without him, the Dragons finish 5th, well out of contention. With a sub-16 PR and 6th place, they move on.

Olivia Jenney, Bloomfield Hills – came in here projected as 18th place, the final individual out. Left with a 10th place finish and an opportunity to run at MIS yet again. Clintonwood is a quick course, but she’s run here each of the past two years, making it an apt comparison. The 18:54 from yesterday was a major step up from her 19:50 as a freshman.
