STEPPIN’ UP ON REGIONAL DAY

For the most part, regionals in the XC Heartland went as you’d expect. There were two main exceptions, the Shepherd Boys and Frankenmuth Girls. The Eagle women were sure underdogs to qualify and needed to repeat what they’d done at the last TVC jamboree. They did that and more, two girls especially standing out – Kinsley Compau and Hazel Foltz. The young Foltz has taken a liking to this Shepherd course, running her first sub-23 ever here earlier this month. She repeated the feat yesterday, but just skipped forward to a sub-22. Compau was projected 22^nd and placed 13^th. Frankenmuth qualified by an 8-point margin. You do the math, her drop into the 20’s (almost 50 sec. PR!) was essential to ‘Muth moving on.

Shepherd was one of three top-10 D2 boys teams entering yesterday’s fray. However they were projected 3^rd, with less than a 10% chance of pulling off the victory. Odds and percentages don’t account for Bryce Cahoon finishing four years of home regionals with his best placing yet, then leading his six other Bluejays to six PR’s. William McDonald in particular ran well, dropping into the 16’s for the first time all year, subtracting 30+ seconds from his previous best.

The Bluejay effort was so great that it even spurred Rick Cahoon to run a 17:21 in the open race. He’ll be in prime shape for Club Cross.

A few individuals worth shouting out –

Anna McCarty, Carson City-Crystal – matched her regional placing from a year ago. A few weeks back, this was looking iffy, as McCarty struggled to break 23:00. However, she as many others, proved a little toughness on Friday, hitting the 21’s for the first time in her career.

Spencer Dammann, Saginaw Swan Valley – back a year ago, the Viking displayed his championship season prowess, running a (then) personal best, qualifying for State for the first time as an individual. A year later and he hadn’t quite reached that time – until Friday. His 16:27 is now his newest lifetime best and almost three minutes clear of where he was as a freshman.

Eli Baker, Coleman – prior to Friday, had raced seven times in the ’26 season. Five of those seven efforts were above 20:00, some even 21+ minutes. But for the second year in a row, Baker ran his best on regional day, dropping into the 17’s for the first time ever.
