Even though there are large meets regular season meets going on throughout the state, it’s still championship season and high time to prove these right or wrong.

2026 Mid-Season Regional Projections: Division One

We’re actually a bit past halfway, but in my mind, Portage is the end of the regular season. Past this upcoming weekend, the schedule will be dominated by championships – county, league, area, regional, and state. In anticipation of that, why not some regional projections?

These projections take on the same format as the rankings, just at the regional level now. Real quick:

Ratings are generated via:

The top 67% (rounding to the nearest whole number) performances of a runner
- Runners with three or less rated races have all races counted
Those are then weighed on recency, meet size, and competitiveness of the meet

Those ratings are then compiled and scored as a hypothetical meet. Every runner that’s run a rated race from September 1st on is included.

Yes, athletic.net has simulations. These are different than athletic.net because:

They account for course conditions and distance
- If you ran a shorter course, you’re likely to be overrated on there
- If you ran only hilly, rough courses, you’re likely to be underrated on there
They take your best performance, I capture more of the resume

Is one better than the other? The only year (2021) I compared my predictions vs. athletic.net, I correctly predicted 188 of the 216 team qualifiers, a.net simulated 184. 2% difference, but I’ll take it. Last year, I had 194 of those 216 top-3 regional teams, the previous year, 197 of 216. I like my track record. I ain’t no a.net hater either, as I bet I spend more time on there than any human in the US.

Anyhow, as I’ve said on my division rankings, these are for fun. I’m positive in my writings toward everyone, you can be cool toward me. Enjoy.

Any Surprises?

Fenton

I always love it when an influential, fast kid comes along (Gavin Katic) comes along and the fortunes of a program change. I’m not saying Katic is the reason, but it’s sort of a coincidence, right? Anyhow, in the past year, we’ve seen the development of Gerard Gilmour (barreling toward the 15’s), Abram Larsen (getting into the 16’s for the first time ever), and Benjamin Panter (dropping a significant PB at Jackson), amongst many others.

Troy

New coach, no problem. The Colts have embraced the change and ran with it. The Witt boys, Henry and Jack, have been at the front of it, each running in the 16’s on a tough day at Holly, then Henry grabbing his first All-County medal this past weekend. Troy has also been helped by the addition of mid-distance star Andrew Svoboda, who is adjusting the longer distances quite nicely with his mid-17 efforts. I’m sure Clarkston, Lakeland, and Milford will be gunning for a qualifying spot, but the Colts have put themselves in a great position for success.

Battles to Watch

Region 6

Halfway through the fall, it seems that the site selection committee performed a bang-up job on the D1 Boys’ regions. Of course, Region 2 is kinda loaded, but it appears that 2-3 teams have somewhat separated. Much can change, but a good many of these appear definite as to who will be the three qualifiers. With the exception of this one! Salem and Skyline are favorites to advance, top-10 teams that finished 1^st and 4^th respectively at Jackson.

Who comes next? Maybe Plymouth or Livonia Churchill, two common qualifiers here out of Region 6? Perhaps U-D Jesuit, a 2026 surprise? Richland Gull Lake

Okay, it’s mainly Annie Isom doing some work. After placing 6^th in the Division 1 400m and ending the spring as Michigan’s fastest 800m girl, she’s decided to try her hand at XC before she heads off to run for the Gators. Three 5k’s into the season and she’s already whittled her time down into the mid-18’s. That’s impactful. However, she’s not the only contributor, as Lacy Smith and Caroline Reynolds have already hit PR’s and Kalynn Young just dropped 30 sec. from her time a year ago at Bulldog.

Berkley

When your top dawg embraces change and improves, it’s gotta leak over to the rest of the team, right? Paige Rohda had been running at a high level for her first two years, breaking into the low-18’s last fall, qualifying for the 3200m as a freshman. She’s been on a higher plane in 2026, an example coming from this past weekend’s Oakland County Championship, where she dropped nearly 1.5 minutes in a year. She’s brought Bears along with her, such as Isabella Glibota (21:08 > 20:11) and Ana Lucia Reynoso (breaking 21:00 earlier in the season than ever before). It’a total team effort.

Battles to Watch

Region 7

The top-two spots are probably as set in stone as you’ll get, Northville and Novi being clear favorites to advance. Two squads have emerged in competition for the 3^rd qualifier – Farmington and Berkley. Berkley is mentioned above, an inner-ring suburb squad that’s greatly improved from last fall. Farmington is coming off a conference win in the LVC Lakes Division. Both squads are looking to get runners back, with a few contributors missing from their Oakland County lineups, where Farmington prevailed.

Region 9

This realignment, gerrymandering of northern suburb D1 regions has led to an interesting matchup. Rochester had typically been in Region 8, an Oakland County-centric spot. Macomb Dakota had hung out in Region 9, heavily centered on Macomb County teams. Now they could face off as two contenders for the third spot out of Region 9. Both the Falcons and Cougars go about things fairly similarly. Each have a low-stick that’s rapidly rising. Each have a culture that’s been cultivated over years. Each have solid depth. Whomever makes it out will have earned it.

2026 Mid-Season Regional Projections: Division Two

These projections take on the same format as the rankings, just at the regional level now. Real quick:

Ratings are generated via:

The top 67% (rounding to the nearest whole number) performances of a runner
- Runners with three or less rated races have all races counted
Those are then weighed on recency, meet size, and competitiveness of the meet

Those ratings are then compiled and scored as a hypothetical meet. Every runner that’s run a rated race from September 1st on is included.

Yes, athletic.net has simulations. These are different than athletic.net because:

They account for course conditions and distance
- If you ran a shorter course, you’re likely to be overrated on there
- If you ran only hilly, rough courses, you’re likely to be underrated on there
They take your best performance, I capture more of the resume

Any Surprises?

Whitehall

Well, Bobby Jazwinski’s early times have been a bit of a surprise. But he’s gone from #1 in D2 from the summer to #1 in D2 in early October. Rex Pumford, his understudy is performing as expected, in the conversation for a medal in a month’s time. Solid depth pieces in Ian Dennis and Scout Freiheit are improving as sophomores typically do. Who has brought the Vikings up the standings? Alex Winczewski, finding the sport again after a 6-year hiatus. The senior’s first XC fall at the HS level has led him into the mid-18’s on a few occasions, most recently at Allendale.

Vicksburg

We could kinda glimpse the inklings of this during track, where the Bulldogs had three boys at/under 4:45 and 10:30, not to mention Carson Summerfield tearing it up over two laps. Even considering the springtime speed, Vicksburg had a bit of room they’d need to maneuver across, coming off a cross season where they placed 5^th in Region 13 and 4^th in the Wolverine Conference. Thus far, they’ve faced five teams in conference action and haven’t yet lost. Can that extend to the regional level? There’s many of the same teams.

Battles to Watch

Region 11

Where Holland Christian will surely occupy the top spot, and as many as six teams could vie for the other two. Cedar Springs, Unity Christian, GR Catholic Central, Holland, Coopersville, and Allendale are all in contention. Cedar Springs is probably the favorite of the bunch, almost all of their boys hitting a PR over the past two weeks of competition. They were also victorious over Allendale and Coopersville at the most recent RCA Jamboree. We also had a recent matchup between Holland and GRCC at Allendale, where the Dutch cleared the Cougars by a 26-point margin, buttttt Mitchell Dunlap did not run.

Region 16

These teams are coming from all over. Far into Washtenaw County, you’ve got Chelsea and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. Reaching up over 8 Mile, Detroit Country Day. A few miles from the MIXC headquarters, Divine Child. Far from one another in geography, close in proximity in projections and rankings. These four squads are ranked within 9 spots of one another and projected within 20 points too. They’ve all got different routes to success. Country Day has the best low-stick in Jack Hincks. Chelsea extends into a solid top-two of Wyeth Angus and Samuel Clifton. Gabriel Richard has the lowest 1-5 spread of the four, 45 seconds by the ratings. And Divine Child has the best 4-5 combo, an always crucial area.

Any Surprises?

Chippewa Hills

Their girls have been on a roll as of late. Their schedule helps give a glimpse into the Warrior improvement. In early September, they traveled east to Shepherd for the John Bruder Classic. Then they attacked conference action before returning to XC heaven this past weekend. In that month gap, CH saw notable improvement from Addison Dekker (22:19 > 20:44), Conley Howard (22:03 > 20:47), Quinn Killian (21:30 > 20:39), Dory Simon (20:26 > 19:36), and Morgan Voorhees (23:41 > 21:37). I really could be up typing all night about all the growth these Chip Hills girls have seen, as nearly everyone on the squad saw a SB or PB this past weekend.

Holland

The Dutch have vaulted into the discussion to make it out of the unfathomably tough Region 11 (four teams from the top-10). They’ve done so on the improvement of two youngsters – Molly Murphy and Tessa Nienhuis. Nienhuis spent last fall getting better all year, her season culminating in a bevy of mid-20 efforts. She’s already moved into the 19’s and is finishing considerably higher in the OK Black standings. Murphy just had two consecutive breakout races in a row, finding a 19:41 at Autumn Sunrise and a 19:27 at Allendale. A year ago, she couldn’t even run that pace for 2 miles, now she’s extending into further distances at a quicker speed, bringing her newfound teammates into state qualifying contention.

Battles to Watch

Region 10

Yeah, Chippewa Hills has surprised thus far and moved into 2^nd in the projections. But the Warriors still have work to do, as many contenders are in close proximity. Clare is right there, Cadillac too, with Ludington not far behind. The Vikings and Orioles have the low-sticks, Chloe Mazza and Ella McInerney, Eliza Schwass and Annabelle Lowman. Clare is more depth-based, an example of that coming at VSV, where the Pioneers placed all of their scorers before Cadillac’s 4^th came in, earning Clare a 2-point edge in the final standings.

Region 13

Three teams, two spots, and a projected 5 points between them all. That’s a doozy. Plainwell, Sturgis, and St. Joseph. Two Wolverine Conference foes are the former two, and we’ve seen them face-off in league play. Plainwell won there, placing three girls in the top-four, a tough proposition to come back from. That said, Sturgis was missing Leilani Machuca, whose 19:45 at Otsego helped close the gap toward the Vikings. St. Joseph has largely steered clear of these two squads, with one decently recent exception, Ottawa Hills. There, the Bears played a role similar to Sturgis, battling back in the later spots to finish just behind Plainwell. By the transitive property of cross country, it might just be between Sturgis and St. Joe.
