Top Runners

I’m making a slight change for the Division 1 folks. Previous regional writeups had the top finishers, even if they were mentioned in the Top 10’s or 50 Tickets. Because so many Division 1 kids make up the top 50 returners (which makes sense, since D1 covers about 60% of the state), I’ll write about a few runners beyond those 50. This will hopefully extend a bit more coverage towards more deserving athletes. Some of the 50 have been covered, others will get their own post. Check the Summer Preview page or keep checking back until next Thursday for those.

Addison Johnson, Utica

It’s been a long process, as this spring, she was able to attain what’s been digging at her for a few years – a track state qualifier. Grinding through the rain in the 3200m at Dakota, Addy ran a lifetime best (11:11) to place 3^rd. She’s been in the 18’s each of the past two years and last fall set another lifetime best with an 18:42 at Shepherd.

Braydee Elling, Oxford

Mentioned earlier in the summer that she’s coming off her best track season yet. In terms of time, the most relevant event might be the 3200m, where she’s improved by 35+ seconds from her freshman form, 11:38 from 12:14. That 11:38 was good for 5^th in Oakland County.

Taylor Brodeur, Oxford

Another one of those hurdlers, getting it done through guts and tenacity. While in the fall, she’s closing her cross campaigns with 18-min. performances, the spring she’s qualifying for State in the 300h. Her 47.59 earned her that spot, placing 2^nd in Region 9.

Louis D’Souza, Troy

On either side of his 4:22, found room for improvement. Competing in the 3200m for the first time in nearly a month, he placed 7^th in Oakland County with a 9:41. Going against those pesky Athens rivals in early May, his 2:00 won the 800m.

Ferdinand Viereck, Rochester Adams

Just as Louis, had a clutch performance in the Renaissance track regional, his 4:24 cutting off 4 seconds from his lifetime best. And he wasn’t done there, placing 8^th in the Oakland County 1600m and proving he wasn’t just happy to be at State, shaving 0.4 seconds off his previous best.

Andrew Floros, Clarkston

Concentrated on the mile during the spring and to great result. Hit a PB at the Brighton Bulldog meet in late April, then knocked that down by a few seconds, running 4:29 at Oakland County.

Kian Schneeweis, Troy

Track unlocked a guy who will form a formidable three-headed monster for Troy. Sub-10 on all but one of his 3200m races, including a 9:40 to place 6^th in Oakland County.

Alex McArthur, Oxford

When he’s not laying it on the black on the mound, he’s letting it rip between the white lines on the grass. Alex has been in the 16’s for each of his two high school years, placing top-10 in this regional each time out.

Blake Peardon, Lake Orion

The lead runner on a rebuilding Dragon squad. Reached down into the 16’s twice late last fall, his best a 16:30 that placed 8^th in the OAA Red.

Top Returners

Collin Farmer

Has been a relied upon low stick as a part of this Pirate team. While wearing the Blue and Yellow, has won 55% of his races over these past two years.

Allan George

Consistent 17-min. figure after barely sniffing that mark to close the ’21 season. Perhaps the most prominent point of comparison were the CMAC Jamborees – he was top-10 in all as a sophomore, above 20^th in all as a freshman.

Sam Muirhead

Did serious work this spring in the mid-distances. All season, was below the 2:22 he popped as a freshman, running 2:1x’s until he blasted a 2:08 at their Last Chance Meet.

Luke Schneider

I have no doubt the strength gained from the 300h will turn over into cross. Ran in the low-18’s early in his freshman year, then placed 6^th in the CMAC for the low hurdles.

Davis Smith

After spending a good bit of his freshman year above 20:00, spent a greater bit of his sophomore year in the 18’s. Eight of his final nine races were below 19-flat.

Reed Schroeder

Gave us a glance at a little potential during track, running a 5:07 near the end of the year. In my mind, if you can run near 5:00, you can flirt with the 17’s, which would show tremendous growth since last fall.

Potential Newcomers

Wyatt Werner

Winner of Junior Greater Lansing and owner of a 17:22 5k to close the year at the MITCA Meet. Consider that 17:22 was performed while training for 2 miles, not 5k, and that he’s had another year of growth since then. Perhaps look to track to see that growth, as Wyatt excelled in all events – 2:06/4:42/10:24.

John Kowatch

Low-11’s for all of cross, even snuck into the 10’s on a few occasions. A bit more concentration in the 800m during track, ranking 8^th amongst Michigan MS’ers.

Nolan Mitchell

His track season was where it was at. Especially in the 3200m, where he was victorious in three of four races, including a 10:39 at Distance Night.

Charlie George

Sub-12 on three of his final five races.

Top Returners

Betsy Skendzel

Has quietly had a brilliant career, made up of a Lake Michigan Conference title, a Region 19 win, and two top-10 Division 3 finishes.

Rylee Duffing

Toughness on the ice leads to toughness on the course. Or is it the other way around? Either way, she’s moved up each and every year, finally slipping under 20:00 at last fall’s regionals.

Mary Masserant

Despite a late start to competing, found her way into the 20’s. Mary was in the top-100 at State for the second consecutive year.

Maddie Gallagher

May have only moved from 15^th to 12^th in Region 19, but moved through the world at State, nearly halving her finishing place from 2021. Her 64^th place finish was key in displacing the 5^th (and some 4^th) runners of rival teams.

Paige Ritchie

A reliable 21-min. girl as a freshman. Her only deviations were positive ones – running into the 20’s at Ottawa Hills and Cadillac.

Margot Hagerty

Before her Cadillac Invite, she had spent her whole career over 21:00. Her 20:52 there introduced a slew of sub-21 efforts, five of them in her final seven races.

Potential Newcomers

Molly Kate Hollandsworth

Sub-14 in her final three XC races.

Emily Dumphrey

Moved her way all the way down to 13:14, which placed her 8^th at Shepherd.
