Top Runners

Thought I’d give a review of some of the top returners in each region. Returners means no incoming freshman (you’ll get your days in the sun). If you’re on a top team or in the 50 Tickets and you’re projected highly here, you hit the jackpot! Yes, I’m writing a bit less than previous years, but I think I’ve learned my lesson in that I need to conserve energy and brainpower for all divisions and regions. Typically by August, I’m rushing to get these done. This time around, hopefully all regions get the same amount of coverage.

Clara Fletcher, St. Johns

When I refer to her just getting better, I’m not just talking about the fall. Clara dropped 15 seconds from her 3200m best and moved up 6 spots to grab a medal at D2 State this past June.

Meghan Ford, Mason

One final swan song for this storied senior. Meghan’s been All-State all three years, and twice the regional champion. It’s been quite a journey and path, I gotta say she’s quite resilient in how she keeps showing up at such a high level.

Kayla Williams, DeWitt

Noticeably sizeable difference in the results between her 9^th and 10^th grade years. Almost a 3:00 difference in her personal bests and tons of medals in important spots – such as 5^th here in Region 14 and 10^th at Greater Lansing.

Abby Young, St. Johns

Cross country had the breakthrough into the 19’s, then the tracks were witness to her plummeting times. The D2 Finals saw a 5:16 get laid down, an impressive 11^th place in her individual debut.

Nicole Schafer, Williamston

You know this region is stacked up front when a girl such as Nicole is ranked 6^th. She was All-State as a freshman and 32^nd last year, both years running in the high-18’s/low-19’s.

Nate Carmody, Haslett

After his sophomore track season, you knew a giant improvement was in store, but he blew even those expectations out of the water. Sub-16 in five races and 23^rd in Division 2. More to be written about this ever-improving athlete…

Alex Doneth, Mason

Has spent considerable time in the 16’s each of the past two years, notching two top-10’s at Regions 13 & 14.

Kenny Evans, Corunna

Breakout season on the track a major impetus behind his high ranking here. Subtracted more than a minute in the 3200m while competing for Corunna, the Team State Champions.

Isaac Staib, St. Johns

Running 53’s as a sophomore + closing in 16:00 during his junior XC season = the kind of guy that can run 1:58 during track.

Cooper Singleton, Parma Western

Whether it’s a 16:26 here (20 sec. PB) or a 4:25 in May’s regional at Mason, Cooper has found a way to bring his best efforts to the regional stage. And given the 4:25 and subsequent 15^th place at D2 State, expect significantly faster times this fall.

Nolan Inglis, DeWitt

Always finds a way to outperform expectations come championship season. Projected 6^th here in 2022, he placed 3^rd, taking home a shiny new PB in the process.

Dylan Lydic, Haslett

Last year’s regional projections had an inkling that he was underrated, but I didn’t foresee the incredible time he’d run here. His 16:45 was a major comeback from the 18:00+ performance at Greater Lansing.

Top Returners

Vincent Guaresimo

Romeo kids and stunning improvements, a time-honored tradition. In recent memory, that was Zander Cobb, now it’s Vince. The light turned on for him during the ’22 track campaign, which led to a cross season where he dropped from the 18’s to mid-15’s, placing 8^th in Division 1 to close the year.

Connor Clor

I’ve always thought Connor to be more endurance-oriented than speedy. This spring he showed he can combine the two, holding 66’s for as long as possible en route to a 4:25 in the 1600m at Barnyard.

Michael Magnoli

Had quite the double at the Macomb County Track Championships, setting PBs in both the long distance events, 4:33 and 9:55.

Bryce Goodsell

Quality races toward the end of his sophomore year helped the Bulldogs place fifth. Then he built upon that as a junior, ripping sub-17’s on two occasions.

Luke Allen

Successful freshman campaign that saw Luke drop into the 16’s on two of his final three races.

Owen Gould

Fairly dramatic drop between freshman and sophomore years, evident both on the track and the grass. Perhaps the spring is more relevant to this fall? His 5:07/10:52 turned into 4:44/10:15.

Ethan Wilkie

Throughout his first two years, never even got under 18:00. I’m not sure which switch he turned on after Holly this year, but it worked, with PBs in four of his final six races, including a 16:53 at Shepherd.

Top Returners

Helen Sachs

Helen was the ultimate low stick for the Panthers in 2022. No matter the stage, she was either 1^st or 2^nd (and if 2^nd, that was to Arianne Olson). The OK Red, Bredeweg, Portage, the State level, she crossed the line first in any setting. More to come in the next few weeks…

Ava Porras

Just kept getting faster and faster and faster, before ending her regular season with a bunch of low-19 races. Hard to pick the best of which, so we’ll settle on her 19:25 at MIS, placing Ava smack dab at #50.

Jane Olney

Love the stark difference between 2021 and 2022. Jane didn’t even compete on the Panther state squad during her freshman year, but didn’t let that get her down in 2022, where she placed right with Ava at 49^th.

Addie Birkholz

Set some speedy times this spring in the mid-distances, 60.8 and 2:18. And that even extended up to the 1600m, where her 5:11 ranked 4^th amongst all D1 freshmen girls.

Emma Gunnett

Has been in the 19’s in both of her years of shared suffering with her West Ottawa teammates.

Julia Frampton

I’m not sure if the 400m has any correlation to cross country, but it might in terms of mental toughness. So if Julia dropped a second from her freshman year, she can surely drop time this fall too right?

Potential Newcomers

Malaynee Levandoski

Great opportunity ahead to learn from some of the best and hopefully apply those lessons toward the end of the year. She was 3^rd in the MKO, 4^th at Portage, and boasted many efforts in the mid-12’s.
