The Rundown

2022’s version had Valerie as the 19th best returning D1 girl.

2023’s version had Valerie as the 14th best returning D1 girl.

The past two seasons, she’s finished 23rd and 14th at State.

Those writeups focus on her range and ability to get it done across all seasons. This past fall, it was wins early and late, at races such as Bredeweg, Allendale Falcon, and Region 1. A personal best over at Shepherd, her 18:09 being the best time she ran in two years. On the track, her speed continued to flash, sprinting down into the 58’s for the quarter. In her prime event, the 800m, she attained wins in the OK Red and Region 2. Unfortunately, the State Finals didn’t go her way in the individual 800 (the 4×8 was another tale of passing tons of girls), but that’s one minor hiccup in a career full of successes.

2024’s version has Valerie as the 14th best returning D1 girl. I think we’re in for another treat come November.

The Rundown

Man, what’s Coach Kroll got cookin’ up at Churchill? The Chargers have always been a development-based program, seeking massive improvements over their high school career. They may not get the middle school numbers of surrounding programs, they must make the most of the talent that they’ve got. And Joey’s talent is becoming more and more apparent throughout time.

The guy has been going at it for three years now at Churchill, but to me, his arc really began in the fall of ’22. After navigating through his first five meets, he got his first glimpse of that Shepherd magic, lowering his personal best from 18:55 to 17:29. Track saw the PR fest continue, Rohmfeld progressing to a 4:41/10:06.

During Joey’s junior cross season, he also benefitted from the fast track at Shepherd, racing to two personal bests there, each in the low 16:20’s. Those were a precursor to his final act that put him on the list, his 3200m races this spring. Kid set SIX personal bests this season, 9:53 > 9:45 > 9:32 > 9:30 > 9:27 > 9:17. That final PB was at State, a 9th place finish in D1.

From 2:40/5:14 as a freshman to 4:23/9:17 as a junior. A tale of progress that doesn’t look to stop.

Hunter Eaton

The sleeper of all sleepers. Following a cross season that ended in two sub-17’s, the freshman Eaton underwent significant growth to commence his track career. A 4:24 1600m ranked #5 amongst freshmen and #1 of anyone in D3/4.

Josh Slocum

Three-time top-6 finisher here, breaking 16:00 his last time out on this East Jordan course. Coming off another solid track season that ended on a really good note – 9:44 being good enough for 9th at State.

Owen Read

Came up huge in the State Finals, finishing 15 spots better than his projection. That 33rd place finish was probably his best race of the year, a necessary component of the Glads state title.

Betsy Skendzel

Brynne Schulte

Twice All-State, twice top-3 here, twice ending her seasons in the 18’s. And I think that 5:18 from track shows more could come.

Sophia Buzzelli

Great freshman cross results, among them an All-State and top-3 performances at each Jack Pine meet. What I’m really impressed by was her Team State quad. Relay win in the 4×8, then no lower than 3rd in the 800m-3200m.

Molly Kate Hollandsworth

Came into herself during the last half of her freshman fall. Five of Molly Kate’s final six races were in the 19’s, including a 4-spot here.

Mary Masserant

Clearly a fan of this East Jordan course, because it’s been home to her season’s best during each year of her career. And from 2022 to 2023, she moved up 11 places from 16th to 5th.
