The Rundown

When writing these, I often do a little research beyond what I already know and can find on athletic.net. Searching for Jane, I came across this article about an award and scholarship she just received. To sum up her work in the community and her aspirations:

“Manthei is a junior at Harbor Light Christian Academy. She is hoping to attend a small Christian college and plans to study English and global studies. Upon graduation, Manthei wants to work with an international nonprofit organization with a special interest in working with immigrants to the United States. During her time in high school, Manthei has served on the student council for three years. She is also on the cross country and track teams. She works with an organization called YoungLives that provides support and mentorship for teen mothers. Manthei also volunteers at her church as a child care helper for second and third grade students.”

The Petoskey News article came out on April 27th. Six days later at Bluejay, she ran the 3200m race of her career, dropping a 10:57. She’d always been a long distance specialist, earning a podium spot in 2023’s 3200m and at MIS the prior fall. But this was a whole ‘nother level, one only bested by two other girls in Division 4.

Bringing good deeds and really good running together, Jane Manthei.

The Rundown

One must be careful with teams such as Northville. If you’re not intently watching, talent lurks in the cut, bides its time, and suddenly springs upon you.

A freshman year of cross was inauspicious, but fast at the end, Ben running in the 17’s for much of the year on those tough KLAA courses, before dropping a 16:51 at the Meadows and 16:42 at Willow. Sneakily good for a youngster, but nothing that predicted the onslaught we’ve seen the past three seasons.

First, a 4:31 freshman 1600m that ranked #8 amongst all 9th graders. Second, a 15:37 and 24th place finish at MIS, 10 spots better than his projected placing. Then a perfect 4×8 relay leg that led to Powell and Herger sealing another state championship.

Coming more and more into the light, Ben Hartigan.

Tyler Laansma

Coming off a tremendous track season where he was able to slip under 10:00 in the 3200m and run 4:33 as well.

Riley Weed

Has about as much experience as you could ask for from a sophomore, twice in the top-50 at MIS and top-10 here in Region 31.

Noah Schipper

Track season, especially the 3200m, shows he can improve upon the 33rd place finish at State. 10:15 ranked #5 amongst all freshmen in D4.

Gibson White

One of many Crusaders not to get overwhelmed by the championship season moments. Low-17’s throughout October into November, the kind of marks that help your team hoist a trophy.

Coleson Cruzan

Benzie to Chippewa Hills, Region 29 to 20 to 30. No matter what the division or location, Coleson has moved on from each region to run at State. He looks to make it four in a row this fall, now at Allendale in Region 31.

(Seriously though, White Cloud is that perfect central location that makes them an easy chess piece to move around. They could easily drive to Shepherd or Benzie and still be within a reasonable distance of a regional.)

Christian Getz

Greatly outperformed his championship season projections. Thought he’d be 14th here, placed 3rd. Thought he’d be 53rd at MIS, finished 40th.

Libby Smith

Dropped into the 18’s on many occasions, won over half of her races, finished 2nd here, and nailed a top-10 finish at MIS. I’d say that’s a pretty decent start to her career.

Veyda Conley

Freshman season came with a tremendous close. 19:51 here for 3rd, then a shocking 19:33 at State.

Kelcie Pung

Fowler’s immaculate track season wasn’t just in the sprints and hurdles, you also had girls such as Kelcie that ran 5:23/11:59. She’s coming over from Region 33, where she’s nabbed a state qualifier in each of her past three regional races.

Ava DeYoung

Another Tiger freshman, able to smash into the 19’s and pick up top-10 finishes here and in the SAC Championship.

Lauren Shaffer

Showed to be extremely reliable in her 9th grade season, over 60% of her races were sub-21.
