Projections vs. Reality

The pre-race projections thought 25-26 of the All-Staters would come in as expected, instead there were six underdogs.

Unexpected All-State

Annabelle Lowman, Ludington

Projected: 54^th, 13.4% chance of All-State

The Ludington girls have slowly been making themselves known at the elite levels. For Annabelle, it was a precipitous drop at the end of the year, transitioning from a 20-21 min. girl towards the low-18’s at both State and MITCA.

Nora O’Leary, Petoskey

Projected: 38^th, 33.4% chance of All-State

A patient first mile put her in position to gain a spot on the podium. Despite running essentially the same split (5:56, 5:59), Nora moved up from 42^nd to 17^th and held that position until the finishing stretch, where she moved into 16^th.

Samantha Brown, Clio

Projected: 35^th, 32% chance of All-State

Dramatic year-to-year improvement from this sophomore. As a freshman, she hung around the 20’s/high-19’s. Come her sophomore season, she was able to break her way into the 18’s, including a 18:37 closer here at MIS.

Layla Jordan, Goodrich

Projected: 33^rd, 19.6% chance of All-State

The mid-distance star is beginning to show flashes of distance discipline. Sub-19 in five of her final six races, including an 18:12 at MITCA.

Natalie Foltz, Frankenmuth

Projected: 34^th, 24.4% chance of All-State

It appears that the All-State tradition will continue over in Frankenmuth. The sophomore dropped 12 spots from her freshman year, hitting the 18’s for the third time on the year.

Caroline Randall, Hastings

Projected: 36^th, 33.8% chance of All-State

Your I-8 conference champion showed she’s a championship-level racer, earning 4^th in Region 12, winning the Barry County meet, then placing 29^th here.

All-State History

Emily Tomes

Take a gander at the Fifty Tickets done over the summer and you’ll notice a trend. The 7^th, 10^th, 11^th, 14^th, 15^th, 18^th, and 19^th spots were all taken by Division Two girls. Now I know my summer work isn’t the end all be all, but it’s all defined by previous track and cross seasons. And based on the 2022-2023 season, any one of those girls (and more!) could’ve won and we wouldn’t have batted an eyelash.

What was Emily’s case and argument? First, a reputation as a fierce racer. She came into view late in her freshman year, summoning a massive personal best in the heat of the D2 finals, breaking 19:00 for the first time ever. After a few years of growth, she returned to that stage, finding a fifth-place finish after a ferocious kick. Another one could come from track, where she displayed an increased amount of strength and endurance. She had lowered her personal best in the 1600m to well under 5:00, a 4:56 at the State Finals in fact. Earlier in the spring, a 10:44 at the Bluejay Elite 3200m gave her the 2^nd fastest returning mark in Division Two.

Her 2023 season started inauspiciously, with a 20:41 at Michigan Catholic. But if you know that course and Emily’s typical trajectory, in hindsight, you know that wasn’t a major cause for concern. Come mid-September, it was evident that her base level of fitness was much improved over previous years. In the major invites of the mid-season, Tomes was able to run into the mid-18’s on every occasion, a substantial improvement from the 19:00+ efforts of her junior year. Come championship time, it was only natural that she’d summon yet another level.

Just as predicted in the summer, the D2 girls race started with many candidates in the quest for glory. At the mile, 11 girls split between 5:36-5:39. At two, that front pack had whittled down to five, Tomes in the back, hanging in there and ready to pounce on any move. Coming onto the track, it was three: Elena Figueroa (setting up for a monster track season), Gail Vaikutis (4^th in the mud at RunningLane), and Tomes. Closer to three, the latter two had separated, and it came down to the finishing speed of Tomes and Vaikutis. The two will be teammates in the coming years at Michigan, but in this race here they were competing against one another, with Tomes prevailing in the final meters.

Movin’ Up

DeWitt’s Mia Williams was the queen of moving up through the race, passing 61 girls from the mile to the finish and 26 girls from 2 miles on, the tops from each split.

She didn’t, however, set the mark for runners passed down the home stretch, as that went to Grand Rapids South Christian’s Riley VanderLaan, who moved up 9 spots in the final 173m.

By far the quickest kick of the field was the winner, Emily Tomes, who split a 29-flat for the final tenth of a mile, hitting 4:10 pace.

Perfectly Paced

Mentioned earlier, Petoskey’s Nora O’Leary. Her 18:28 was the equivalent of 5:56 pace, which she maintained throughout the entire race. 5:56.5 at the mile, 11:55.6 at two (5:59), 17:54.3 through three (5:59). In doing so, she moved up 25 spots from one to two, held that position into three, then moved up one down the finishing stretch.

Projections vs. Reality

D2’s boys had perhaps the highest number of breakthroughs and underdogs thus far, with 7 of the 30 All-State athletes getting in there when unexpected.

Unexpected All-State

Caleb Palmreuter, Gladwin

Projected: 32^nd, 49.3% chance of All-State

What a difference a year makes. Spent the majority of his junior year above 16:30, was a consistent low-16/high-15 kid as a senior.

Nolan Nixon, Cadillac

Projected: 52^nd, 11.4% chance of All-State

Toughness prevailed. Due to injury, Nolan missed much of the summer. He slowly worked his way through the year, beginning in the 17’s and working his way down to a 15:45 here.

Isaac Staib, St. Johns

Projected 37^th, 24.4% chance of All-State

When he’s been on, he’s really been on. Sub-16 on a few occasions throughout the year, such as a 15:50 at Bluejay and a 15:46 here. A sleeper to do some big things in the 800m this spring.

Ezekiel Baltierra, Alma

Projected 33^rd, 37.2% chance of All-State

The lone freshman boy in the top-30. His final three races were all of the sub-16 variety, getting progressively faster from Region 15 to here to MITCA.

Andrew Yax, Clio

Projected: 49^th, 6.9% chance of All-State

Picked the absolute right time to submit his first sub-16 ever. A 15:47 here was a 15 second personal best and over a minute faster than his performance the previous year.

Henry Cox, Plainwell

Projected: 43^rd, 9.7% chance of All-State

Capped off an incredible senior year that included wins at Delton-Kellogg, Bangor, and Region 13. Henry ventured under the 16:00 mark on three occasions as well.

Moises Salazar, Adrian

Projected: 34^th, 33% chance of All-State

Second consecutive All-State for this young sophomore, who was sub-16 in his final three races.

All-State History

TJ Hansen

Again, take a gander at the 50 Tickets and another theme will come forth. The high-quality, returning depth entering the season for these Division Two boys. They took up six spots in the top-ten, often unheard of as D1 takes up almost half of the state’s runners. You had a defending champ in Connell Alford, low-9 3200m runners in Solomon Kwartowitz, Nate Carmody, and Paul Moore, a mid-15 returner in Evan Loughridge, and your defending 3200m champ in TJ Hansen.

TJ entered high school with all the potential, a pressure that often proves too much for some. He’s handled it admirably, progressing with patience each step of the way. As a freshman, he accumulated many honors, such as the Saginaw County Championship and a Region 15 title, then in the closing stage, acquitting himself to MIS with a 12^th place finish. A few months later during track, he was able to set the Michigan freshman record in the 2-mile, a 9:28 (the 3200m record held by Ben Hill, a 9:20) at New Balance Nationals.

The advancement continued in future seasons. I could recite stats and places all day, but I think the story of the end of his sophomore year speaks great volumes. Following the accident, faced with many reasons not to run, many fallback options if a race was going sideways, TJ persevered through the pain to secure another regional championship and a move up to 5^th at D2’s State Finals. I have no doubt the confidence gained from pushing through tremendous pain has aided him in the coming seasons.

What has occurred in those coming seasons? A 3200m championship in the spring. His 9:11 wasn’t the fastest time of the season, but consider the conditions, blazing heat in early June. He came into that race with the third-fastest time in the field, but outlasted the rest of the field, a testament to his ability to block out any negativity during a race. Here, a State Championship. You know me, I like my charts, and here’s one of the top-30 finishers and their times over the final 1.1 miles:

If there’s anything that shows his dominance over the final stages of the race, the above is it, TJ’s split on the botton left. Over 10 seconds clear of any elite competitor on the finishing road to a State Title.

His impactful finishing ability was again on display this past weekend at NXN. The patient young man came through 1k in 79^th, 2k in 39^th, and by the time 4k came around, he was in 10^th, a spot he held until the finish. With only one underclassman ahead of him, TJ will have the opportunity in coming years to further etch his name into Michigan running lore.

Movin’ Up

A dramatic jump was executed by Parma Western’s young Edison Lopeman. The sophomore moved from 137^th at the mile to 51^st at the line, advancing 86 whole places.

Similarly dramatic was Allendale’s Mason Hill, who was 108^th at two and 65^th at the finish line.

The Parma Western distance crew must be tough and fierce in the finishing stretch, because they had the best closer in the field. Titan Parker moved up 10 places in the final tenth of a mile, laying down a 25.1 split, the equivalent of sub-4 pace. Put that boy in an 800m this spring!

Perfectly Paced

The most even of even splits were delivered by the experienced Connell Alford. The result here in early November may not have been what he wanted. But he’s still running, competing this upcoming weekend at FootLocker. My guess is that ability to lock in and handle a tough pace may have something to do with his 2^nd consecutive trip to San Diego. Anyhow, his 15:11 at MIS equated to 4:53 pace. His splits were right there on the mark: 4:52.5, 4:53.3, and 4:52.7.

Projections vs. Reality

Pre-race projections had an expectation of being correct on 25 All-State girls. When reality kicked in, 25 girls were both projected as All-State and then stepped on the podium.

Unexpected All-State

Avelina Hollandsworth, Remus Chippewa Hills

Projected: 32^nd, 47.2% chance of All-State

She’s run a personal best at three of the past four State Finals. This one was a huge one, knocking nearly 20 sec. off her time from Portage and nabbing her second straight All-State

Cecilia Postma, Manistee

Projected: 31^st, 46.9% chance of All-State

Closed her career with her two best performances. 19:06 here was a significant personal best, then she battled the emotional high, returning a week later at Shepherd with another personal best.

Ava Hathaway, Bronson

Projected 39^th, 41.9% chance of All-State

Despite a slower start, ended her junior year in the same fashion as she did her sophomore one, hitting that podium. Ava closed her season with three straight sub-20’s and a personal best here.

Chloe Stalhood, Hillsdale

Projected 60^th, 1.6% chance of All-State

She’s closed each of the past three seasons with sub-20’s, this iteration being her lowest yet – a 19:10.

Ashlynn Harris, Bronson

Projected 37^th, 33.3% chance of All-State

The second of the Viking All-Staters. This was her first podium finish and her first finish in the low-19’s.

All-State History

Jessica Jazwinski

Back-to-back champions surely aren’t an anomaly in Division 3. Before this year, in the years following the combined team/individual races, there have been five girls who have repeated their victories in consecutive years. Three of those girls had won three in a row. In 2022, a sophomore had won, opening the door for a continuation of this Division 3 tradition.

Jessica Jazwinski had truly come into her own during her sophomore year. Following an early season defeat at Bredeweg, she ripped off victory after victory, sub-18 after sub-18. The finishing stretch was the most awe-inducing – a State Title, a 16:47 at MITCA, a CHAMPS qualifier (*EDIT* AGAIN THIS YEAR!), and an 11^th place finish at Nationals.

Let me tell you this: amongst the favorites, the title winners, the best in our State – there is a competitiveness that is unmatched. In an opening matchup at Benzie against Rachel Forsyth, Jazwinski ran 10 seconds faster than the year before, opening with a 17:35. Yet there, I couldn’t help but think she wanted more out of that performance. And that’s what the great ones do, right? Find motivation in anything and use it as fuel.

That fuel burned slowly as her junior season took the same great path as the previous one. Wins at Bluejay, Ottawa Hills, Cougar Falcon, Portage, and Region 20. All took place in her usual dominating fashion, setting a hard pace from the start and daring others to hang on. The same trend continued at State, a torrential opening pace that led to a 15 second lead at the mile, 40+ second lead at two. Coming across the line before any others, Jazwinski was able to make history, becoming another girl with back-to-back state titles.

Movin’ Up

A Squire senior made the most of her final State appearance. Lauren Jousma was able to drop 96 spots from her 228^th place at the mile, placing 132^nd.

Pigeon-Laker’s Aubrey Zarnke consistently moved up all race, going from 189^th at the mile to 147^th at two, before catapulting past another 33 girls to place 114^th, the most passes from the 2-mile mark onward.

Ida’s Julia Hughes had the opposite experience of the above two, sliding backward as the race wore on. But she was able to recoup some of those losses, sprinting around 11 girls in the final 173m.

Perfectly Paced

Fennville’s Merisa Mendoza really rocked some even splits. Finishing her race in 21:22, her pace for the 5k was a 6:52. Hitting 6:51, 6:55, then 6:11, she had the least deviation of any of the 200+ girls competing.

Projections vs. Reality

Expectation was to correctly projected 26.78 All-State boys. Reality struck and the projections were spot on for 25 boys. Which means there were some major underdogs that stepped up!

Unexpected All-State

Nathan Vargo, Flat Rock

Projected 43^rd, 0.1% chance of All-State

Take a look at those odds! Throughout his junior year, Nathan had been in the 16’s on five separate occasions before the State Finals, though all five were above 16:50. His MIS experience was a bit quicker though, a significant time drop into the 16:20’s. That’s why we run these races.

Nathan Day, Saranac

Projected 37^th, 1.0% chance of All-State

Second consecutive All-State for this Saranac senior.

Bailey Wiggins, Midland Bullock Creek

Projected 53^rd, 1.9% chance of All-State

Eighteen races through his freshman and sophomore years, all above 20:00. Bailey then transformed into a mid-17 kid to close his junior year, an ending that set the stage for similar heroics as a senior. First, leading his Bullock Creek crew to the State Finals, then busting through to a 16:27 to end his career in the black n’ gold.

Alex Czeiszperger, Hudson

Projected 51^st, 0.5% chance of All-State

Began his career with an All-State as a freshman, ended it with another one a few weeks ago. His 16:27 was his best time of the year, a good 15+ seconds quicker than his effort at the typically quick Stockbridge course.

Isaac Edgington, Holland Black River

Projected 32^nd, 31.7% chance of All-State

As a freshman, every one of his five races were above 21:00. Isaac progressed into a 17-min kid as a sophomore, then solidly into the 16’s in the final months of his cross season.

All-State History

Collin Farmer

Either on the track or on the grass, Jazwinski, Lenn, Harrand, the three winners written about prior, had all experienced a State Title at one point prior to November 4^th. With Hunter Jones’ dominance from 2019 to 2023, four straight cross titles and the rarely accomplished distance triple on the track, competition was open coming into the year.

Collin Farmer was definitely one of the experienced seniors in contention. Despite missing his freshman season of cross country, Farmer had racked up 9 All-States in 5 seasons of cross and track. He’d performed at MIS, grabbing 15^th place in Division 3 as a sophomore and 26^th as a junior. Come June on the track, he did his thing as well, doubling and medaling in both the 1600m and 3200m this past year and placing 6^th in the 1600m as a sophomore.

After victories at both Yellowjacket and Marauder, Collin took to Sparta in mid-September to flash his capabilities. His 15:43 there was another victory, his highest rating of his career, and a precursor for the season to come. Following Sparta, Farmer and his Pirates took a bit of a break from major competition and the break was of great benefit. At Shepherd and Portage, Collin exceled amongst the best D3 competition in the state. His 15:29 at Shepherd was another substantial personal best, his 15:40 at Portage was yet another victory. Despite not holding the best time in the division, Collin had established himself as a solid candidate to win in November.

And come championship season and into November, that’s all he really did. Greater Lansing, the CMAC, and Region 24 – all wins. The Greater Lansing one was the first of his career. After a loss as a sophomore, he came back to win his Region as a senior. All of this set up for the State Finals, where the senior wonderfully handled the pressure. 5:01, 5:04, 5:01, 33. Almost as even as you can ask for, leading at the mile, in 2^nd at two, then running the 2^nd fastest (behind Gus Rohde’s scorching finish) final 1800m to ensure a victory. A great cap to a career of ups, downs, and a multitude of successes.

Movin’ Up

Clinton’s Gabe Manchester cruised through the mile in 5:33, then ripped past 96 individuals towards his 61^st place finish. He passed the most individuals in the final 2.1 miles and also in the final 1.1 miles.

Down the homestretch, three boys were able to pass eight others in the final 173m:

Two Covenant Christian boys – Caleb Drnek and Luke Dykstra
And another West Sider, Caleb Swiney from The Potter’s House

Perfectly Paced

A freshman wins the honor of pacing the greatest. Bath’s River Fox crossed the line in 16:58.7, just under 5:28 per mile. His one mile split? 5:27.5. His two mile split? 5:26.9. Third mile? 5:26.3. Immaculate stuff.

Projections vs. Reality

The projections hit on 26 of 30 All-Staters, with an expectation going in of 25.53 (expectation meaning that I add up all the percentages of the projected top-30).

Unexpected All-State

Four girls got on the medal stand, having an astounding race when not expected to:

Avery Langlois, Rogers City:  Could you see this coming? Yeah, if you take into account her prior two meets, a 20:10 at Northern Michigan and a 19:19 at East Jordan’s regional. For the majority of the year, Avery had been in the 21’s. Here, around two minutes faster.

Lily Lemanski, Marlette: Two years of cross country, 17 races, never was sub-20. She got there in her final two, and one of the rare ones that ran faster at MIS than Wagener Park.

Katie Sweeney, Ubly: Same as Lemanski, picked a huge occasion to have her best race ever. Her 19:50 was a full 2+ minutes faster than her time in 2022.

Yolanda Gascho, Johannesburg-Lewiston: Actually her 2^nd All-State of her young career. She was seventh last year, and this year, one of three Cardinals to get there. And like a few of the above, the D4 finals were her first foray into the 19’s this fall.

Aiden Harrand

We knew of her speed on the track, we knew she was the defending champ. But last year’s field didn’t push her in a way that this one might, and track doesn’t always carry over to cross country. A point in her favor, however, was her triple in late April, powering into the low-10:50’s at the end of a long day.

Aiden began the year with a personal best, racing into the 17’s for the first time ever on a revamped Benzie course. She hit that mark a few more times before a massive clash with Kaylie Livingston at Portage. After a blistering first mile, Aiden fell back, racing to an admirable second, but losing the first showdown and preview of State. After Portage, the sub-18’s continued, helping her Bears capture the NWC and Regionals, closing her career on her home course with a victory.

At MIS, she allowed separation to form early between herself and Livingston, but closed the gap by the mile, leading the pair through in 5:34. Through each of the succeeding mile splits, a similar gap was there, although it was beginning to expand toward the end. During the final 170 meters, a 2.5 second difference widened to 6 seconds, Harrand holding on for a second consecutive state championship.

Movin’ Up

Superior Timing was wonderful in their tabulation and timing of the meet, providing accurate and quick live splits that you can go back and peer over. Those live splits don’t call out places on the individual screen, but if you click on a runner’s name, you’ll see how they moved through the race. Here’s who passed the most people from each respective split:

1 Mile: Danielle Agren, Johannesburg-Lewiston

155^th to 109^th to 79^th at the finish.

2 Mile: Grace Kendziuk, Allen Park Cabrini

153^rd at two to 118^th at the finish.

3 Mile: Olivia Wing, Mason County Eastern

137^th at three to 126^th at the finish.

And while we’re at it, the quickest kick goes to: Ava Teed, who covered the final 173m in 30.5 (4:43 pace).

Perfectly Paced

Along with finding those who passed the most bodies throughout the race, I also looked to see who was the most consistent through their splits:

Abigail Davis, Vestaburg

Her 19:53.7 was a 6:24 pace and she stuck right in that range. 6:26.5 at the mile, 12:48 (6:21.3) at two, then right back on the wagon at 19:11 (6:23.9) at three. In total, that’s a 5.4 second separation between her mile splits and her average pace.

Projections vs. Reality

Just as the girls, the projections hit on 26 of the 30 All-Staters. And just as the girls, this was about what was expected, with the total expectation being 26.11.

Unexpected All-State

The four unexpected top-30 finishers were:

Aiden Fitchett, Dryden: Really shouldn’t have been a surprise due to his ability to rise to the occasion. 23^rd place here last year and then two straight sub-17’s to close out his career.

Mitchel Daniels, Pentwater: Before the season began, made two goals – to achieve an All-State and break 17:00. One would require moving up from 50+ places from his previous best and the other counted on Daniels dropping 35+ seconds. He ended up running two 16:4x efforts and moving up 61 places from his sophomore best.

Luke Niedzielski, Mason County Eastern: The senior in his second year of the sport dropped over 50 seconds from his junior best. And into mid-October, he was lurking around that junior best, before ripping off a 17:14 at Shepherd and two sub-17’s at Buckley and at MIS.

Carson Burgess, Brown City: Only one sub-18 during his freshman year. Sophomore year was full of them and even featured a few 16 min. efforts. Twice at Wagener, once ten days ago in Brooklyn.

Tyler Lenn

All-States on the track, ankle sprains, fast indoor times, fibular issues, a 1600m upset, Achilles tendinitis. Ups and downs throughout his career, Tyler came into his senior year as a candidate to do something special on the grass. With Moses Osterink graduating, a void was left in which a few contenders could pounce on.

But the injuries almost forced him upon a role of patience and more patience. Quick times were occurring, but nothing as low as his school record from the previous year. Tyler’s early season consisted of a bunch of mid-16 efforts and a win at Eastwood Beach. His Cardinals then concentrated on CHSL action, where he consistently placed 2^nd behind Abe Cerone. It appeared the injuries had taken their toll and Lenn would be relegated to anything but a victory.

Then championship season came and hope arose in the form of a 16:02 at the CHSL Championship. There was now evidence that he could make it happen at MIS and anyone that’s seen Tyler race knows – if he’s in the mix late, there’s a great chance he’ll prevail.

In the mix he was, trailing Owen Patton (who ran a valiant effort coming off sickness, much respect to Owen) at the mile by three seconds, hanging with a pack of six. By the time the competition headed toward the infield, three boys remained – Cerone, Patton, and Lenn. As the three went around the northern bend, Lenn separated from the rest, holding that lead until he crossed the line. In spite of all the triumphs and setbacks, a championship found its way back to Marine City.

Movin’ Up

1 Mile: Uzziel Thomassen, Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

182^nd at the mile, 142^nd at two, then 114^th at the finish.

2 Mile: Diego Bocole, Jackson Preparatory

127^th at two to 91^st at the finish.

3 Mile: Carter Clark (Carson City-Crystal), Jacob Chamberlain (East Jordan). Owen McLoughlin (St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake)

Each moved up nine places in the final 0.107. Clark from 68^th to 59^th, Chamberlain from 136^th to 127^th, and McLoughlin from 164^th to 155^th.

The best kick goes, unsurprisingly, to Tyler Lenn. His final 173m was covered in 27.2 seconds, or 4:14 pace.

Perfectly Paced

Michael Walsh, Ubly

The Bearcat sophomore was about as consistent as you’ll get. Coming in at 18:04, his finish pace was just under 5:49. He hit the mile in 5:48.3, his second mile split was 5:48.3, and his third mile was WAY off (kidding!), 5:49.8. Compared to his average pace, a total time difference of 2.1 seconds.
