As always, these writeups below will shoutout someone or a team that stood out from the race. That may not be the best runner or the winning team. Perhaps a team that surprised, a runner breaking through, or a runner contributing to a team victory. SIZZLIN’ AT STOCKBRIDGE

Carina Burchi. Whitmore Lake

Even taking into account that Stockbridge usually runs extremely fast, this is by far her best performance of the season. Her 18:43 here is her first time under 19:00 on the year and on a similar comparison, it’s 28 seconds faster than her Stockbridge performance last year. Points will be crucial at every spot of this D4 race, if Carina can build off this, the Trojans have a greater chance of slamming the door on others.

Gavin VanKampen, Jonesville

Ranked #8 before the season, Jonesville perhaps hadn’t run to their capability before yesterday. Looking through their invites, there were losses to a few D3 teams. That said, I’m confidently calling this the best race of their season. The Comets tied with Marshall (a top D2 squad) for second, coming in front of all of their D3 rivals. Gavin led from the front, placing 9^th in 16:14. Even with the typically quick conditions, far and away his best effort of the year.

RUNNIN’ FREE AT FREEDOM HILL

Braydee Elling, Oxford

Getting to be a broken record at this point, but this is the time of year where the Wildcats begin to shine. Two consecutive Oakland County titles, returning to Possum Hollow this upcoming Saturday in hopes of bringing home a third. And in anticipation of that, Braydee has broken a mark that she’s been on the cusp of for years. 19:05 at State as a sophomore, 19:06 here as a junior, now a 18:59.8(!) in her senior year. What do they call it? Peaking at the right time? Yep.

Aiden Pengelly, Canton

Man, Canton continues to impress. Heading to the East Side, facing three other top-10 teams, the Chiefs came away with another victory. They were led by Aiden Pengelly (son of standout Salem Rock, Scott Pengelly), who blasted a sub-16 for the first time ever. Keep in mind that Aiden was above 17:00 for all but one race last fall. I don’t know what it’s in the water over on the Canton side of PCEP, but they’ve surely stumbled upon a ton of greatness.

DARTIN’ AROUND DEWITT

Autumn Thompson, DeWitt

Dominating performance by the home squad today, placing four in the top six and all five scorers in the top ten. Autumn has had a bit of an inconsistent start, but hopefully today was the kickstart for an impactful October. Placing second here, the junior had her best finish yet at her home invitational. Her 19:49 earlier in the year marked three consecutive years south of 20:00.

Isaac Fullerton, Parma Western

We’ll have to add St. Johns into the mix, but a battle may be brewing between DeWitt and Parma Western for the Region 14 crown. DeWitt has the depth, but Western’s crew is fast approaching. With their firepower up front, all that is needed is for the rest of the Panthers to close gaps at the back. Crossing the line in 18:06, Isaac was PW’s fifth man, and point-wise, he was 4 places and 6 seconds back, close enough to clinch second place for PW.
