2023 Ratings: Bath

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

Girls Adjustment: -5
Boys Adjustment: -2

As always, these writeups below will shoutout someone or a team that stood out from the race. That may not be the best runner or the winning team. Perhaps a team that surprised, a runner breaking through, or a runner contributing to a team victory. Of course, if you come to me nicely and want to brag about a fellow team/competitor/teammate, let me know, and I’ll try to give them love further down the line.

BLASTED BATH

Northville’s 4^th-6^th girls

Colette Lozo, Rosie Gregory, and Lily Connors were all key in the victory over Saline. The three were able give the Mustangs 6 finishers before the Hornets’ 5. The experienced upperclassmen – Gregory and Connors, both ran season bests while Colette Lozo is sticking her nose right in there as a freshman. She’s been in the mid-20’s twice this year, capitalizing on the potential she showed last fall as an 8^th grader.

Adrian’s Freshmen Boys

Both Carter Fenner and Silas Skeels stepped up in a major way to hand their Maples a victory. With Marshall placing four boys under 17:05, Adrian’s 4^th and 5^th guys needed to come in quickly in order to lessen their points. And they both did, each keeping their personal best streak alive.

2023 Ratings: Muskrat Classic

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

MARVELS AT MUSKRAT

Jayden Harberts, Macomb Dakota

Good to see Jayden out there racing again. I had no doubt towards her competitiveness and ability to rebound from setbacks, but you never know. Two races thus far this year, two victories. This marked her 3^rd straight Muskrat Classic win to go along with the many honors she’s accomplished and many honors to come.

Dakota Boys

Of the 21 boys to compete here at Muskrat, over half attained PB’s. And this was at Eastwood, a fair course. Beyond the PB’s, the Cougars were dominant in terms of team scoring. Their 43 points were only challenged by Lake Orion, and they had a huge gap over anyone in Region 9. Huge improvements from 2022 have been a boost for the green and blue, Lucas LaMilza and Colton Howell being two of the more significant, each comfortably into the 16’s after largely being in the high-17’s last year.

2023 Ratings: Rambling Rock

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

RAMBLED ON

Morgan Brown, Livonia Churchill

Oooh, she’s back. Just continuing the progress she made in track, Morgan ripped a 40+ second personal best in her first real opportunity to let loose. She made a decisive move on the final Willow hill, opening up a bit of a gap en route to a 17 second victory. Expect times to drop even further if she’s pushed in that final mile.

Oxford’s Boys

Hard to pick just one, as the whole Wildcat team has been a surprise thus far. They dispatched regional competition (Utica) and beat a few other teams (Churchill, Lakeland) that will probably be top-20 teams when the rankings drop. You’ve got experience in Ames, Cusick, McArthur, Myrand – all running close to or better than their previous bests. The name that has stood out to me has been Cass Feeney, who’s built on the 17:05 effort from MITCA, already finding his way into the 16’s in the early season.
