The Rundown

The Hornets are known for developing their 800m runners but let’s not act as if they can’t bring along a longer distance stud. In two years time, he’s dropped nearly two minutes on the cross course, coming from a kid who was a JV runner to top-3 in the SEC Red and Region 5. The blossoming from his freshman JV XC season to now kickstarted during his freshman year of track, where he went 4:51/10:22 in the late season. That 10:22 is now 9:32, the 4:51 is 4:28. Saline is always careful and considerate of the athlete’s injury prevention and long-term goals, that development usually takes a little time before someone rips a senior year. And Truman is more than ready to do that.

The Rundown

When an excellent runner hits the Division 4 scene at a young age, they often rack up the medals and have wild amounts of success. Ava did just that as a freshman, grabbing three All-States, a 15th place on the grass and then two on the track. Having goals to strive for in the future is commonly a great motivator that portends faster times later in a career. With many great honors in hand, Ava could have settled for just D4 stardom. She’s done the complete opposite, especially this past track season, where her 11:04 ranked #38 amongst all Michigan girls and #23 amongst all returners. From 15th to 11th to 5th, she keeps moving down, how many more places can she go?

Top 27 Teams

Previous years had top-25 teams, but there’s 27 (and sometimes more) team qualifiers and what does it hurt to add another two?

Girls

Caro (Top 7), Ithaca (9th)

Boys

St. Louis (Top 7), Pigeon-Laker (13th), Ithaca (16th), Sanford-Meridian (21st), Caro (25th)

(If your team isn’t listed in the images above or the scores below, you probably don’t have five returners, at least on ol’ athletic.net. I’m sure many of these teams will fill out their rosters by late October)

Top Runners

Thought I’d give a review of some of the top returners in each region. Returners means no incoming freshman (you’ll get your days in the sun). If you’re on a top team or in the 50 Tickets and you’re projected highly here, you hit the jackpot! Yes, I’m writing a bit less than previous years, but I think I’ve learned my lesson in that I need to conserve energy and brainpower for all divisions and regions. Typically by August, I’m rushing to get these done. This time around, hopefully all regions get the same amount of coverage.

Kinsie Jacques, Pinconning

The Spartan senior has accomplished tons during her three years on the cross course. A Bay County title as a freshman, a Jack Pine championship as a junior, and two All-States (30th, then 15th) the past two years. There’s one title left on the plate though…

Liliana Lehnst, Ithaca

After her first XC All-State, Liliana didn’t just relax and take it easy. You saw her all throughout Indoor with her Ithaca girls, then during outdoor she busted out PBs in the 16/32. Dropping 14 sec. in the 3200m was a huge one that sets her up for even better place at MIS.

Jaiden Dickman, St. Louis

Dominated the TVC-10 this past spring, capturing the vaunted distance triple at their league championship. At the regional cross country scene, she’s been top-6 in each of her three years. Can she make it a fourth?

Kaya Vrable, Caro

Freshman year of track showed all the signs of someone ready to have a breakout fall. But signs are one thing, you have to go out and do it. Kaya moved up 9 spots in Region 25 and 41 spots at MIS, gaining her 2nd and 22nd place finishes.

Ben March, St. Louis

He’s been an essential figure in St. Louis’s success these past few years, reliable in the most significant races. Ben’s 16:48 at State as a freshman was a 10 second personal best, notable on that unseasonably warm day. He was then 9th as a sophomore, combining with his brother Nate to form the most formidable duo. Finally, as a junior, 15th. Three All-States and the perfect lead runner for a team looking to step onto another podium.

Matthew Pattullo, Caro

In the 800m this spring, continued what he started with in 2022. As a sophomore, he captured the GTW and Regional crowns, but didn’t run the event at the State Finals. After lowering his PB to 2:00 and repeating as those same champs, he placed 14th in the State on that hot day.

Landen Styka, Ithaca

Dude had himself a track season. Landen’s 9:57 in the 3200m over at Region 30 qualified him for State, where he placed 11th. The mark is also the fastest amongst all Division 3 freshmen.

Landon Pestrue, St. Louis

These past two years, has shown an ability to whittle down his times into eventually running PB’s as the season closes. During his sophomore year, ended the year as the #2 runner on the Sharks regional-winning and top-3 placing State squad.
