Best Jump Crews: Girls Week Seven

Sad news – these are the final two weeks in the regular season of ranking the best crews.
Great news – two weeks from now, I’ll be working on my State Finals previews.
Somewhat decent news – after the State Finals, I’ll be putting together final rankings and individual awards.

Included in these rankings are marks uploaded to athleticnet by the second half of the Warriors/Lakers, aka the Lonnie Walker game.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Boots on the ground tell me that Madison Morson, had a few inches to spare in her clearance of 5’9 at Farmington. She has state meet experience, you may recall a great duel between her and Gabriella Newman, where Morson placed second. I always like to compare where an athlete was at this time last year. Morson was jumping 5’4, adding 4” in championship season. Combine those extra few inches, late season improvement, and championship experience, and she has everything possible ahead of her.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

What an otherworldly improvement from Milan’s Malea Wourman. As a freshman, she stayed under 5’0, hitting her best marks in mid-season with a string of 4’10s. At Manchester’s Metrics Invite, she dominated the high jump with a 5’3 win, vaulting her into a top-10 ranking in D2.

I’m just looking ahead: if you’re a fan of the long jump, you need to head over to Region 25 or 26. Five of the top six long jumpers in Division 3 are in those two regions, all in that Irish Hills/Ohio border area.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Lifting her fellow Pumas into the top spot has been Sohanny Gonzalez-Castillo. All year, she’s been solid in the high jump, clearing 5’0 early and staying undefeated in Alliance League action. But her efforts in the long jump at the GR Elite Challenge are a recent astonishment. She bolted past the 16’ barrier, adding 14” to her previous best, nabbing a win against a D1-centric field. She’s now the D4 leader in the sand.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Sprint star Danica Shamion just doesn’t compete on the oval, she clears bars too. Last week, at the Lakes Invite, her and Ellie Delene (4th place last year in Division 3, 2021 champ) went head to head. Shamion came away with a victory and Delene nearly matched her winning jump from a few years back. Each have a great chance to improve on their finishes from 2022.

Best Sprint Crews: Boys Week Seven

Thanks in advance to those patiently waiting. Leaving for Shepherd at 10:30am, coming home at 1:30am. Leaving for work Saturday at 11am, coming home from Farmington at 11pm, working these last two days on top of that leaves little time for the posts. But I’m here and here are the boys sprint rankings.

Here’s an explanation:

EXPLANATION

These are the previous two rankings. Hopefully your team has moved up!

WEEK TWO

WEEK FOUR

With the exception of the UP, these are all from races with fully automatic timing. Results had to be uploaded onto athleticnet by SUNDAY NIGHT.

Throwdowns & Showdowns

Damarcus Rouse – Two big wins in the 400m at Elmer Ball and Farmington. Both were over Krish Gupta, who’s a great candidate to medal at State. Also beat Skyline’s Henry Shaieb at Farmington, who also ranks in the top-10 in Division 1. Capping all that off, he took the stick from Parker Orlowsky and ran away with the 4×4 at Farmington, leading his Highlanders to a 6+ second victory.

Throwdowns & Showdowns

Michael Ferguson – Throughout the year, has established himself as one of the better, if not the best, 400m runner in Division 2. He’s undefeated on the year and won the Goodrich Invite going away (but watch out for Ypsi’s Courtney Price in the coming weeks). I really liked how he hung in there amongst the shorter sprinters in the 200m. Beecher’s Jaylin Townsend is probably the most explosive sprinter in D4 and he won by almost a second, but Ferguson was right in the race with the rest of the competition, placing 4th in a 22.48 personal best.

Is this real?

Okay, let’s back up. I fully believe Marine City’s Parker Atkinson ran a 10.21 in the semis, then a 10.50 to win the Muskrat Classic. And no one can discount coming away with a victory. But with no wind reading and no prior times, it’s tough to tell if he’s a legit state contender. We have no record of him competing last year and the only other race on his profile is a 23.44 hand-timed 200.

I’m not sure which heat he ran the 10.21 during the semis, so I decided to look at comparable competitors in the final, his 10.50. Four of those finalists had meets with fully automatic timing or fully automatic timing with a wind reading: Onction Zape, Keith Berry, Cory Franklin, and Andrew McNamara. Here is how Parker ran relative to them and how many seconds he beat each of those guys:

PlaceNameTimeSeconds Back
1Parker Atkinson10.50
3Onction Zape11.100.60
5Keith Berry11.120.62
6Cory Franklin11.320.82
7Andrew McNamara11.350.85

Clearly, Parker was the class of the field, that can’t be disputed. But in analyzing his competition’s times, we find that they all ran much faster than their previous bests. I can see one person having a considerable breakthrough, but four in the same race, all by similar margins. Doesn’t pass the smell test.

NameTimePrevious Best (FAT)Improvement
Onction Zape11.1011.860.76
Keith Berry11.1211.880.76
Cory Franklin11.3211.780.46
Andrew McNamara11.3511.860.51

Perhaps the best comparison is to Keith Berry, who has raced three times in races with a wind gauge:

Credit to Oxford and Ferndale for having the requisite equipment! Every one of these is a legal reading for record-keeping, but I wanted to convert into a more normalized time, using this calculator. With the converted time in this limited sample, Berry appears to be a 11.9-12.0 100m runner. With this information, I would guess Parker Atkinson is more of a 11.3-11.4 runner, which is really freaking good for a career opener. I’m excited to see how the rest of his season goes.

Throwdowns & Showdowns

Reed City – The ‘Yotes 4×4 closed Bluejay in dominating fashion. The field contained Hart, a top-10 4×4 squad in D3 and Fowler, a title contender in D4, who had the meet champion in the 400m and 300h. Reed City’s distance boys showed out, Kiaunis coming back from a massive PB in the 1600m, Rohde coming back from a meet record and PB in the 800m.

Here’s the video

I liked a few things:

  • All the coaches and teammates running across the infield. Don’t let anyone tell you track isn’t a team sport.
  • The expression from the guy in the stands a few minutes in.
  • Reed City’s third runner crashing into the yellow caution tape after handing off
  • But most of all, I liked their win.

Throwdowns & Showdowns

Ford Phillips – Had his big breakthrough at Shepherd. Last spring, he was D4’s best freshman 400m runner by almost a full second. But he hadn’t really had that time drop in a race until he had to pass Tyler Saxton in the final 50m to capture the Bluejay victory.

More of a news section than anything. For the first time ever, an Upper Peninsula team is coming down for MITCA Team State. Pickford will be joining D4 teams to compete on Memorial Day weekend. Congrats to the Panthers!

Lauren Goodman, Linden – Competed against a field comprised of mainly D1 schools at Brighton, came away with victories in both the 100m and 200m. She’s shown the added speed and strength necessary to make it out of Regionals and back to State in the 200m, where she placed 8th in 2021.

Ariana Todd, Chippewa Hills – It’s May, which means its championship time, which means its time for the Warriors to extend their CSAA championship streak. The league is a bit tougher than I recall – Reed City, Kent City, Central Montcalm with distance girls; White Cloud with throwers. But with Ariana at the forefront of it all, Chip Hills should own the sprints. She’s been the winner at all league contests in the short sprints and even ranks 5th in D3 in the 200m.

Gabriella Gashaj, Marine City Cardinal Mooney – Throughout her career, she’s been a solid sprinter. Running in the 28’s, making it to State as a junior. She can long jump, placing 9th last year, she can hurdle too. This spring, she’s had a little breakthrough, skipping the 27’s entirely and hitting a 26.99 at Richmond’s Blue Devil Invitational.

Danica Shamion, West Iron County – The UP’s top returning sprinter is here again. I’m allowed to say “top returning sprinter” as she was victorious at the D2 Finals in the 100m – 400m, along with a 6th place in the long jump. Hand timing kinda obfuscates her results, but it appears she’s already in peak form in the short sprints, and I have no doubt she’ll drop seconds in the 400m. She’s undefeated this year, but will have to fend off some Bark River folks down the line.
