These are compiled using marks tossed onto athleticnet by Tuesday night.
Your Division 1 model of consistency and defending Shot Put champion is back. In 2022, Andrew Berryhill rode a string of four straight 56’+ efforts en route to a state title. For 2023, he’s expanded his range, reaching 60’ already.

After taking two losses in their opening dual against Alma, Frankenmuth’s Dalton DeBeau is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t occur again. All but one of his tosses have been better than those marks, and his 180’7 in the disc is the furthest in the state in 2023. Two important dates: May 10th is the rematch against Alma in the TVC8 Championship, June 3rd is where he’ll (hopefully) defend his State Title.

In order to capture a state crown, a team must have outstanding individuals and a few surprises. For Pewamo-Westphalia, that outstanding individual is Gavin Nurenburg, who has picked up 24 points on his own in the last two D3 finals. Again, he finds himself in the mix, ranking 3rd in D3 in both throwing events. But then you add in a darkhorse, Dalton Brown, who catapulted 50’+ shot put at Kent City Elite, finishing 5th among the division’s best. On that First Saturday in June, if the two can combine for 15-20 points, that will go a long way toward the Pirates title bid.

Last year in the discus, Petersburg-Summerfield’s Dakota Kohn just kept adding distance, meet after meet. First it was a 118’ in early May, then a 132’ at Erie Mason, then ending in a 143’er at D4 State. Thus far this year in his undefeated campaign, he’s already passed 140’ twice. Consider that his best throw as of this time last year was under 120’ and think toward the future. He’s a real candidate to win it all.

His first year of track as a senior and he’s already figuring things out quickly. Lyle Horn burst onto the scene with a 36’11 shot put at Harbor Springs. In just over two weeks since then, he’s added more than 4 feet. Currently, he’s ranked 2nd in Division 2 and 6th in the entire Upper Peninsula, but I see no reason he can’t move up even further.
Here’s a list of college commitments from those in the class of 2023 and any transfers from those who went to HS in Michigan. If you know of any others, let me know. I will look to fill these in with links to athleticnet and any sort of social media that the athlete has posted regarding their signing.
These contain meets thrown onto athleticnet by Tuesday night.
Her toss, her winning toss at the Walled Lake City meet, set a Walled Lake Central school record. The Vikings’ Savannah Breitwiser, another name from a team that constantly pumps out throwers, ripped a 144’9 in last week’s meet. The effort was her season best by 10+ feet and better than her 5th place in the previous State Finals by 15+ feet.

In her outdoor season, she’s competed in 24 finals, ranging from the 100m to the discus, 200m to the shot put. Maelie Hope has won all but four of those finals. And that’s against real competition too. For example, Whitehall has gone to Kent City Elite and the GR Elite Challenge in back to back weeks. Maelie has captured wins in both throwing events at these elite meets.

If there’s gonna be any challenger to Sophia Snellenberger, it’s probably gonna be in the shot put, and your most likely candidate has gotta be Payton Otto. If she’s competing, pencil her in for a 37’+ throw. All of her best throws have been above that mark, and if precision were a thing, she’d excel at that too, throwing within 20” on each of her 7 victories this year.

Three times All-State, is it now time for the big one? With her 37’10 opener down the road at Manton’s Rust Buster, Harley Bear showed she’s quite capable of finally claiming gold. In the past few weeks, she’s showed the first meet was no fluke, with two more 36’+ efforts.

She’s the defending D2 Shot Put champion and runner up in the discus. I had her ranked #4 on the list of returning Upper Peninsula throwers. Based on the early season, Danielle Lund looks poised to return to the podium. She’s won in both throws in her two meets, Manistique and St. Igance and she’s got a personal best in the SP, 33’6.
