How Right/Wrong Was I? 10/12 on teams, those 3rd place D2 teams forcing their way in. Corunna’s Boys and Owosso’s Girls – well done. 60/72 on Saturday’s meets thus far.

DEALIN’ AT DEWITT

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Jaxon Strauch, Corunna: Jaxon’s two seasons competing for the Cavs have started in similar fashions, his first few meets running near the 20 min. mark. They’ve finished oh so differently. Beginning in October, he’s been on a tear, starting with an 18:00 effort at Greater Flint. He nearly equaled that mark at Shiawassee County, then broke through the barrier with a 17:54 here.

Claire Agnew, Owosso: Comparing yourself to others can sometimes be a negative. Comparing yourself to past versions of yourself, that’s a great show to see how far you’ve come. Her junior year ended at Regionals in 23:19, a 39^th place effort. Her senior year ain’t ending at Regionals, thanks to a 21:21 that grabbed her 31^st, but more importantly, moved the Trojans into the 3^rd slot.

Miingen Bertrand, Ithaca: The Yellowjackets had a DAY and you can point to anyone for their upset victory. Miingen in particular has been surging these past few weeks. Three consecutive sub-18 performances, each a PB in their moment. What may be the most incredible stat of all is his regional race was his best placing of the year, with a bigger field than average, you normally never see that. He placed 7^th, helping Ithaca put 4 runners in front of anyone’s 2^nd runner, earning the Yellowjackets another trophy.

Alexis Spitzley, Ovid-Elsie: A goal she had in mind for two years, Alexis qualified for the State Meet. She’s faced her fair share of adversity, befallen by Covid late in 2021, tearing her ACL, MCL, and meniscus prior to the spring track season. A lesser woman may have folded, given up hope, hung up the cleats, and said it wasn’t meant to be. Alexis returned to training in the summer, both on the roads and in the gym, training smarter rather than pushing the envelope. Fast forward to regionals, Alexis was finally able to compete, overcoming those past setbacks, finishing 12^th.

HESS HEROES

Sa’Nyah Wilkes, Redford Westfield Prep: This is the first year that Westfield Prep has featured a female runner. Credit to Sa’Nyah being the first of everything. Current school record holder, first individual qualifier, first All-Region athlete for the Warriors.

Anna Reineck, Clarkston: During her sophomore campaign, Anna showed flashes (20:49 at Jackson, 20:31 at the OAA Red Championship), but lacked a bit of steadiness. Although the times may be similar year to year, this past month, she’s been a needed steady hand. Her 20:54 here may not be her fastest time ever, but it’s easily the most impressive mark of the year, having a major role in her Wolves competing next week at MIS.

Ethan VandenHaute, Cranbrook-Kingswood: Hess Hathaway is a bear of a course. You run up a mountain twice and that mountain ain’t smooth sailing either, full of dirt and roots. There are questions as to the course’s length, at least in comparison to previous iterations of the course, but it’s among the hardest you’ll find in Metro Detroit. Ethan has run on a few of those tough courses this fall, Possum Hollow and Holly. Each of his races at those courses were above 19:00. If he runs similarly here, Cranbrook is in the fight of their life for the 3rd spot. Instead he just ran a massive PB, 17:52, and the Cranes are hangin’ around for another week.

GREAT AT GOODELLS

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Lance Edghill, Fraser: From a 17:09 at Lamplighter to a 17:07 at the MAC Division Meet, Lance had become a regular in that *just* over 17:00 stage. The only way to snap out of that routine? A pressure-filled regional race that got him to 16:54 and the Ramblers to their first State Finals since the 80’s.

Anthony Goatley, Madison Heights Lamphere: Working and being good friends with Coach Worthington, I’m attuned to the inner details of his coaching life. Building a program, recruiting, starting new traditions, and hoping to inspire a future generation of runners. Early in the season, it appeared Anthony had a great shot at an individual qualifier, sneaking into that 6th or 7th spot. Well he got in and he sure made his intentions known with a 17:05, 2:40 faster than his 2021 best. These are the kinds of races that can kickstart a program and I truly hope that’s the case at Lamphere.

Lauren Thomas, Anchor Bay: Whats with these Anchor Bay kids and their massive leaps? Just like Mr. Westphal, Lauren is out here casually dropping 2+ minutes off her 2021 best, finishing 12th in Region 9. 

Karlie Schlaud, North Branch: After being the final additional qualifier in her sophomore year, Karlie had a tough junior year. She didn’t qualify for State, she barely came within a minute of her personal best. Senior year has been a different story, hitting a new personal best early and crossing the line in 15th on Saturday.
