8/20-8/25 Week in Review – Individuals

We’ve completed our first full week of the season.  The week began with Abby VanderKooi’s incredible introduction to the scene and finished with a great battle between Ann Arbor Pioneer and Hart.  Impressive times were dropped, including Sam Martens’ 15:34 and Adelyn Ackley’s 17:03.  Next week, I’ll have my first rankings, but here’s some individual performances that stood out to me:

Lani Bloom, Ithaca (19:23 Birch Run Early Bird, 154.7 rating) – Lani had an impressive middle school career, running 5:33/11:24.  For her first 5k, this is a great effort.

Maggie Zimmerman, Hartland (20:48 A2 End of Summer Classic, 115.8 rating) – Hartland has exceeded my expectations for both boys and girls.  Zimmerman in particular has shown great improvement from last year.  She didn’t run the same meets, but Hudson Mills and Huron Meadows are similar (Meadows a bit slower).  Her performances thus far indicate close to a minute improvement.

Maryam Sheena, Walled Lake Western (19:36 South Lyon Inv., 144.3 rating) – Maryam completed her first full season last year, with much time dropped throughout the year.  Although her 22:06 at the same meet last year probably didn’t indicate her true fitness, 150 seconds faster is remarkable.

Savannah Sipley, Davison (19:43 Mike Jackson Memorial, 130.5 rating) – Savannah PR’ed, won by 30 seconds, and bettered her time by nearly 2 minutes comparable to last year.  Given the margin of victory, I’m guessing she can run faster.  Look at her track times too, 2:19/5:30.  With the strength gained from a successful cross season, there’s good reason to think she can flirt with 5:00.

Jaden Theis, Lansing Catholic (17:25 Michigan Catholic, 184.3 rating) – Even with Ackley and VanderKooi running faster times, I’m rating her performance faster.  Michigan Catholic has typically run ~40 seconds slower than Benzie Central.  It’s not as if Jaden’s race was a fluke.  2:22/5:00/10:25 in track show her range and she debuted with a 10:49 earlier in the week.  Spartan and Portage will be fun.  Hopefully Hart and Muskegon WMC are able to step up in division.

Brock Lynch, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart (18:07 Early Season Warrior, 181.1 rating) – A few years down the line, we’ll likely be debating who’s better: Brock or Sharnas.  Saugatuck vs. Sacred Heart.  The Chippewa Hills course was a mudpit, especially those closer to the middle of the pack.  That 18:07 debut likely means much faster times later.

Keegan O’Malley, McBain (16:36 Pete Moss, 187.1 rating) – Major improvement for this guy.  55 seconds faster than last year at the same course and a 22 second PR.  Keegan is very important as a lead runner if McBain wants to do anything in Division 3.

Brenden Knuth, Dryden (17:34 Birch Run Early Bird, 191.5 rating) – Last year, I had Brenden at approximately a 166 rating for the entire season.  Quite a jump into your senior year!

Robert Burke, Ann Arbor Huron (17:13 A2 End of Summer Classic, 187.2 rating) – I anticipated Burke being a solid 5th runner for Huron, but this race may indicate he’s ready to join their formidable pack.  If he continues with similar efforts, they’re a surefire top 15 Division 1 team.

Cooper Lenzi, Clio (17:58 Birch Run Early Bird, 183.4 rating) – Cooper had a tough finish to 2017’s season and this isn’t a huge improvement from last year’s time.  It is a sub-18 effort on a tough course and combined with his track season (4:41/10:21), I think he can go sub-17 by the end of the year.

Those are just 10 people who stood out.  Tomorrow, I’ll have the Google Sheet of all the meets and ratings from last week.  Next week, and every two weeks after that, I’ll put out team and individual ratings.

8/18 – Weekend Review

The first weekend of the season has come and gone.  Meets and times really start ramping up this upcoming week, but that doesn’t mean I’ve neglected pumping out some ratings.  There were some surprises, a few great performances by incoming freshmen, but also some potential all-state returners not even running this season.

Too early to tell, but the ratings were a bit lower than I expected.  I believe some teams sat out their top runners or given that we’re still in the middle of August, those runners were on vacation.  Rain fell throughout the day on Friday, to my judgment, that didn’t feel like much of a factor.  The ratings as of this point in this young season are fun to do, but because they’re weighted, won’t mean much come late October.

A little reminder on the numbers.  To make a long story short, courses are rated on their comparison to MIS.  I’ve compared who has run that course/meet and has run at MIS the same year, found the time differential using the graphing method (find the link to TullyRunners on the homepage), and then applied it to meets/courses throughout the year.  I think there are some shortcomings in terms of sample size that I’ll address in the off-season, but for now this is what we’re rolling with.

ratingtable

Every three seconds is equivalent to one point.  The rating gives an idea (and later in the year, hopefully an extremely firm idea) of what a runner will run at MIS.  This shouldn’t be taken as gospel but more of a guide.  Certain runners improve throughout the year, teams train through meets, and who knows with the weather in this unpredictable state.

I hope to do these weekly reviews to show improvements, introduce athletes I’ve ignored or just plain overlooked, and talk about teams that are surprising.  Later on, I’ll attempt to prognosticate who comes out of regions, then how teams will place at state.  If you’re not comfortable with being mentioned (or your child being mentioned), please let me know.  I’m going to keep this positive, but once again, please inform me if it appears negative.  That’s not my intention.  Neither is my intention to snub someone, as these mentions are subjective and not reserved for only the best runners/teams.  So here we go!

Jozef Meyers (Kalamazoo Loy Norrix) – Last season, I had Jozef rated as a 189.5 with his best race coming at the Portage region, a 198.1.  Overall winner at the Portage Early Bird and highest rating for the weekend at 204.0.

Zach Morse (Addison) – I didn’t even have to look up Zach’s school because he’s been a mainstay in the Lenawee County scene.  Consistent, steady improvement throughout the years, but this could be the breakthrough.  Winner of the County Preview, a title that has eluded him the past 3 seasons and a 24 second improvement from last year.

Zach Duval (Goodrich) – Zach PR’ed in his opening race, which is pretty tough to do when you’ve already gone under 18.  This was probably in the works after a successful track season (2:09, 4:49), but still good to see.

Stephen Henry (Haslett) – Stephen’s performance is a major reason that Haslett was the best team at Under the Lights.  Another PR in an opening meet, and he improved on his rating from last year.  184.6 this weekend compared to 2017 where his overall rating was a 165.7.

Darren Bila (Freeland) – Darren had a great regional race last year, where he PR’ed by 30 seconds, but narrowly missed his individual qualifier.  He had a 37 second improvement from last year’s Hemlock Classic and still, a 4 point rating improvement from that regional race.  I had Darren rated at a 167 last year and he runs 180.6 to open up.

Emily Rennich (Ann Arbor Pioneer) – 22:01, 21:04, 21:40.  Those were Emily’s last 3 Fall Previews.  20:13 to open up.  So at least a 50 second improvement from her best opener and 87 seconds better than last year.  I had her as a 104.7 last year and Friday, she runs a 129.5.  Pioneer just reloads, even from those in their system.

Anna Vogel (Ann Arbor Pioneer) – And sometimes, they just improve when they’re already great.  133.4 last year to a 147.8.  Another improvement from 2017’s Preview, this time by 70 seconds.

Katie Selenko (Tecumseh) – Like Zach Morse, another case of finally winning the Lenawee County Preview.  Kate improved her time from last year, not as much as the Pioneer girls, but she was not really challenged out there.  Still, a 19 point jump in her overall rating from last season.

Jami Reed (Forest Hills Eastern) – Jami had an excellent track season and just continued her string of quality racing.  Running 40 seconds faster than last year at the same course and a 10 point improvement from last season.

Audrey Steiert (Linden) – I tweeted about Audrey’s performance but I think it deserves another mention.  Her 19:21 is her best time since her freshman year and it comes on a course that normally is on the slower side.  82 second improvement from last year at the same meet.  Well done.

Some other runners that impressed were: Riley Hough, Nathan Lott, Caleb Gaffner, Graham Kort, Drew Kohlmann, Madelyn Frens, Ainsley Workman, Clara Krupp, Mirranda Libbey, and Katie Frauenheim.

Ann Arbor Pioneer just reloads.  Despite losing Zofia Dudek (can anyone confirm this?), they reload with 3 impressive freshman performances along with Vogel and Rennich’s improvement.  On both sides, Freeland surprised.  Credit to everyone on their team, notably O’Deay, Hansen, and Harvey for the girls and Bila, Whyte, and East for the boys.  Haslett’s pack will serve them well in bigger meets and they have potential coming from Espen Lehnst.

Other notable teams include Richland Gull Lake, Almont, and Hudson for the girls and Goodrich, Lowell, and New Lothrop for the boys.

8/17-18 Weekend Preview – Boys

*Top Invitational* – Portage Central Early Bird

Once again, a battle between East Grand Rapids and Rockford.  Rockford being slightly ahead as I believe their depth may put some East Grand Rapids runners back.  Jude Parks (10:18 freshman), Sam Johnson  (10:34 freshman), and Ian Cook (4:43, 10:24 sophomore) will be fun to watch grow throughout the season.  East Grand Rapids’ Elijah Becker busted out a 10:22 in track and looks to continue his improvement from mid 18’s as a freshmen to mid 17s as a sophomore into the 16s.

Under the Lights

Holt (#15 Overall, #12 Division 1) has both has the front-runners and the underclassmen depth behind it.  A good combination, with known returners but then potential that could take them to greater heights.  I’m curious how runners such as Luke Jayaraman and Devin Simon run, because we know Audugna Moritz and Alex Penski are about as good of a top two you’ll find.

Ann Arbor Running Company Fall Preview

Ann Arbor Pioneer (#2 Overall, #2 Division 1) is clearly the favorite here but we will concentrate on Ann Arbor Huron (#25 Division 1 – I had some incorrect results for Portage Central and had to move them out).  They return 4 boys who ran under 17 last year and their pack places them just inside the top 25.  Drake Dowdy (4:45) is a runner who could join the pack and Bertrand Chu is another who could jump to the front.  This is a team that may “struggle” in smaller meets but the strength of their 4th-7th spots will help in larger fields.

Durand

Goodrich is the class of the field here.  Another team that has established runners but young runners with potential that could get them in Division 2’s top 25.  Mark Wood is someone who improved quite a bit in track with a 10:01.  That can extrapolate to 16:30 and below.

Lenawee County Preview

Adrian and Onsted are the top two teams here.  Adrian has more potential, with sophomores such as Riley Malarney (5:05), Evan Johnson (5:03, 11:09) breaking into the 17s.  I’m not sure if that’s enough in a region with Chelsea, Divine Child, and Grosse Ile, but if those two make massive improvements, that could give Grosse Ile a scare.

Unity Christian Early Bird

Connor Vachon had a sensational freshman year, accumulating a 180 speed rating, then 4:33/10:16 in track.  I expect him to continue that upward trajectory and potentially break into the 15s this year.  Once again, a tough course.

Hemlock Classic

Saginaw Heritage loses a ton from their 6th place squad.  Brady Neumann is someone who will help relieve the loss of those top 4 runners.  Similar to Vachon, he ran a 10:19 in track and is on course to break 16.
