The Rundown

14th as a sophomore, 17th as a junior. 7th as a sophomore, 9th as a junior. The places may show that Simon was on a downward trend in his 3rd year as an Eagle. I’m gonna tell you that is the complete opposite of what happened, Simon was a markedly better runner this past year.

If you think about time during cross, look to the eight major, non-conference invites that GRC ran. In those eight races, Simon never ran slower than his sophomore self, averaging a 15-16 second improvement.

If speed ratings are the consideration, he was 4.1 points better in 2023 vs. 2022, the equivalent of 12 seconds per race.

You might make an argument that his championship season wasn’t on par with the previous one. That argument was put to bed during track, where Simon ran PBs in the 800m thru 3200m in the final two weeks of the season.

Peer beyond the surface and you’ll see someone who’s hit the times. The high placings on the podium will follow.

Nick Barretto

Some may argue that Northville gets the most talent and that’s why they win. Nick’s development is a strong counterpoint. As a freshman, largely stayed above 19:00. By the end of his junior year, was knocking on the sub-16 door.

Ishaan Kundapur

Who thought running 4:22 and placing 14th at State was possible? Ishaan did and that’s all that matters.

Chase Wolters

More and more evidence that Churchill develops and gets the max out of a kid’s ability. In two years times, Chase went from a freshman running 20+ to a junior closing in the 16:30s.

Brandon Cloud

Highly anticipated freshman was able to observe some of the best teachers, then apply those lessons late. Hit mid-16’s after a grueling cross season, then a number of sub-10 3200m’s on the track. His 9:43 in that latter event ranked 9th among Michigan’s freshman boys.

Logan Mullan

Bided his time this outdoor season, running fast and unattached. Even with sporadic racing, Logan was able to set PBs in the 800m & 1600m. Regardless if he’s able to compete this fall, that accrued patience will pay off.

Nora Gerzema

Don’t be shocked when the cross accomplishments match those on the track. Twice an 800m/1600m qualifier in the spring. Placed 12th in each event in June.

Molly Baracco

A gamer when it matters, 3x top-10 at the regional stage (winning Region 7 in ’22) and an All-Stater as well.

Colette Lozo

Had shown the ability to pick it up a notch at Portage, Jackson. Then a few weeks later, truly turned it up a few more with a sub-19 close.

Lucinda Paliani

A 3x State Qualifier from this region, Lucinda comes off her first full track season ever. And within it, a 5:16 1600m.

Annabeth Hazlewood

Of any D1 girl that competed at State, her splits were the most consistent. Running nearly dead on 6:10’s, her 54th place ranked 5th amongst all freshmen girls.

The Rundown

State Championship as a freshman, Sweet 16 during her sophomore year, State Championship in 2024 as an experienced junior.

9th place in 2021 as a freshman, 20th place during her sophomore year, 9th place as an experienced junior.

The sports may change, but the patterns and high levels remain the same. At Ypsi Arbor Prep, Eliza excels both on the court and on the course (and just this past year, on the track).

Speaking of patterns, one is definitely true for Eliza – she wins a ton of races. This past fall, it was four of her eight regular season races. Without a league, YAP competes in a ton of invites, as a result Eliza picked up wins at Gabriel Richard, Jefferson, and NCA Small School. Moving onto the state tournament, she was able to repeat as Region 27 champ. Then to break the pattern from 2022, had one of her better races of the year at State. And to cap it off, an 18:14 personal best at MITCA.

I’m not too well-versed on girls basketball rankings, but I know for sure that Eliza will compete hard this upcoming fall.
