She’s been a valuable contributor to Oak Park’s depth, paying her dues for two years until now, her time to shine. Kelis Hunter-Young hasn’t gone the typical route of a track superstar, sparkling immediately out the gate. She moved up to the 400m as a sophomore, running 61-62 for the majority of the season before breaking 60 late. Now in her junior year, she opened with a sub-60, then blasted a 57.84 this past weekend. As of now, that time ranks #2 in Division 1, but given Coach Jiles’s penchant for developing athletes, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s much lower in a few weeks time.

She can hurdle, she can lift, she can sprint. Brianna Rhodea is using her senior year to show the gains from her impeccable work ethic. In yesterday’s dual against Adrian, she grabbed PRs in both the 200m and 100m hurdles. Her hurdle effort was more than a half second faster than her 12^th place effort at last year’s D2 State Finals. Her 200m was a FULL second faster than her 2022 best and is now the 4^th best time in Division 2 this year.

Two straight All-States and starting off, looking for a third. Ti’Anna Murphy-Ryan has been a revelation for Comstock these past two years, running 12.x in her sleep, winning over 75% of her 100m sprints, and placing at the highest level. She usually waits until the end of the season to bust out the 12.4’s or 12.6’s, this spring she hit that right off the jump. Her 12.5 at the Lakeview Invite was another victory in a career full of them.

Early on, it appears that mid-Michigan will continue its lockdown on the D4 Girls 400m. Beal City’s Kaylee Locke returns off a season where she placed 2^nd in the 400m to Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart’s Nicole Olivieri. As with many, her 2022 races were a gradual progression, slipping under 62 in April, getting under 61 in May, before busting out her first sub-60 of the year at State. She’s greatly accelerated that timeline this spring, hitting a 59.5 in a dominant win at Fowler’s Under the Lights Invitational.

To me, a solid freshman season is one where you can get to the starting line all season and get better while doing so. Bella Smith did that and more, competing in championship meets and scoring points along the way. Unfortunately, the only championship meet she missed was the UP D1 Finals, but her 13.49 opener in the 100m gives hope that she can make it there as a sophomore.

He ended his junior year on a high note, a Wayne County title after a successful initial season of throwing. In 2022, Demarrio Roetherford finished 4^th in both the Downriver League and Region 5. A year later, he’s showed signs of significant improvement. Both of his throws at the Tiger Relays were significant PRs, the most impressive of which was his 155’ launch of the discus. Not only a 10+ foot personal best, the 2^nd best mark in Division 1.

What is the Lebron family feeding those Alma boys? Last week’s tri meet against Frankenmuth and Bridgeport produced some huge performances from Michael Howey and Devin Dennison. Howey set the school record with his 54’9 hoist. Unfortunately, Dennison was a few feet short of the Alma record, but he can take solace in his defeat of the defending D2 State Champ. The top two D2 throws crews reside in the TVC. Alma won the first battle 10-8, we’ll wait three more weeks for another duel in the TVC8 Championship.

Kellen Kimes has been doing his thing and is easily the D3 favorite in both events. But who could be a contender to knock him off? Mason Mayne is a great candidate. As a freshman, he was one of two to get to the State Finals in the Shot. As a sophomore, he’s added 6’ to his furthest freshman fling.

A one-man wrecking crew, Kylis Fletcher, has led Beal City to the top spot (okay, he’s had a little help from Ben Straus, Parker McDonald, and Justin Recker). Throughout his career, he’s been able to continually progress. Look back two years and you have a guy who couldn’t spin it more than 100’. Look back one year and you see the trajectory from 110’s to the 130’s. Now, he’s begun his junior year with a 140’+ catapult.

Only two of the top eight finishers from the UP Division 1 Shot Put return, leaving the door open for new competitors to find their way to an All-State honor. And by new, I mean really new. A Northern Michigan’s Superior Dome Invitational (a major reason for many Upper Peninsula teams ranking), Nico Lukkarinen ripped a 43’10, tops amongst all UP divisions. With further experience in the event, I expect further gains, but if you were to place that throw in June’s state finals, he’s sure to compete for a title.

She’s back baby! I’m getting my obligatory writeup out for the MIXCSR hometown favorite, Abby Russell. Her 46’7 toss at Allen Park’s Co-Ed Relays is far and away the furthest D1 has seen yet this year. Almost 5’ further than her state championship winning throw and a 2’ beyond her 2022 best. But she has no reason to get complacent with these great distances. Division 1 as a whole has improved, with 6 girls over 39’ already, a length only hit at the end of last season.

Each of the past two years, four inches have separated Haley Guerrant and a state meet medal. Averaging mid-30’s on her shot puts has made for two state qualifiers, 11^th and 9^th place finishes. In 2023, she’s added a few feet to her throws, breaking the 40’ barrier, and snatching nothing but victories along the way. She’s undefeated this year and that growth shifts the conversation from medaling to winning. And I’m sure those state meet experiences will be helpful.

It’s been all domination thus far for Sophia Snellenberger. In late February at the MITS Championship, she won the discus by 10+ feet. That has continued into outdoor, where she’s been victorious by even greater margins against some pretty good competition. And given how her teammate, Raigen Horsfall, has progressed, it wouldn’t be out of the question if these Orioles go 1-2 in both events at the championship level.
