50 Tickets to Brooklyn: Girls 20-11

A summer tradition returns.

Hard to fathom that I’ve been penning these Summer Previews for now, 7 years. Just as in the past, I’ll have the 50 best returners, then as time rolls on, the Regional Previews and Top Ten Teams.

Differing from the past is the format. Individual posts for each region and ticket are a TON OF WORK. Instead, I’ll be knocking off the 50 Tickets with sets of 10 and Regional Previews by their division and gender. Hopefully with these methods, I’ll be finishing on time and actually spending effort detailing what could be some great regional battles.

Anyhow, starting with the girls (they run first this year), your 50 Tickets to Brooklyn. These celebrate our top-50 returners – based on the 2024 XC season, 2025 track season, projected improvement, and a tiny bit of my own opinions.

And for Brooklynn, I dig the major leaps she made from her sophomore to junior years on the track. The main aspect that jumps out is just how much she dropped her 3200m personal best – from 11:19 to 10:47, more than half a minute. She had already been a quality runner, but this difference vaulted Brooklynn from a girl that’d just made it to State to one that placed in the top-4.

And for Katelynn, whatever occurred in the winter of ’24 needs to be studied in a lab. Egli closed her freshman campaign on a high note (or low note?), very nearly breaking 20:00 at MITCA’s Meet of Champions. A mere seven months later, she was not only qualifying for State in the 800m, but making a serious bid to earn a medal. She was Oakland County’s most successful freshman distance runner and then this spring, turned that medal near miss into two of ‘em.

And for Daisy, I could write the same opening sentence as I did for Egli above. Comparatively between the two, Cox was a bit quicker as a freshman in cross, She was consistently in the low-19’s, dropping into the 18’s once, placing in the top-100 at State. Come spring, she had dropped 30+ seconds from her XC pace, hitting tons of low-11’s in the 3200m, before dropping a marvelous 10:42 to place 8th in 2024’s State Finals.

And for Adalyn, I was really struck with how she improved over the course of her freshman fall. She opened with a solid 19:30 at Under the Lights, already appearing as someone that could contribute for the excellent Chix squad. A few more races getting her feet wet and then she was off into the high-18’s. A few races at that level and then off to the low-18’s. Girl could just not stop skipping levels, all the way to top-3 league and regional finishes to go along with an All-State honor.

And for Jaelyn, much was realized as she became a sophomore. Much was presented as a freshman – that she can stick her nose in there at the high school level, that she’s capable of hardware in her D2 fields. In both late ’24 and early ’25, that capability became reality. Ray had progressed from a girl on the cusp of breaking 11-flat and on the cusp of medaling to one that shattered that time barrier early, then stepped up to 3rd in D2’s 3200m.

And for Ella, I wouldn’t even know where to start. I mean, 25+ minutes to kick off her cross country career, then less than 14 months later, she was in the 18’s and contributing to a Romeo state title. Less than 2 years later, she’d broken 10:40 and set the Bulldog school record in the 1600m. What a timeline.

And for Ella, it’s come in the form of increased strength and endurance. Abraham entered the high school on a high level, running killer relay legs for her Falcons and breaking 2:20 for the 800m as a freshman. Moving onto her sophomore year, she’d began to master longer distances, breaking 5:00 for the 1600m, a mark she’d repeat as a junior. That junior season also included her first foray into high school XC, which went about as well as you’d imagine. Top finishes in her county, conference, regional, and in the state to go along with a casual sub-18.

And for McKinley, we notice like many freshmen on this list, that she took her lumps early and had the payoff late. Her lumps were still fast, mind you – mid-18 performances in highly competitive spots such as Jackson, Bath, and Portage. When it came time to apply those lessons learned early, McKInley made the most of it, hitting personal bests in the SEC Red Championship, Region 5, then her first ever 17:xx at State.

And for Sienna, I say this as a compliment, it’s a little less noticeable than most. She’s just been running at a high level for so long. Even before she entered HS, she’d run in the low-11’s for the 3200m. That said, she was speedily consistent, breaking 11:00 in all of her Pioneer 32’s, the final one being the fastest – a 10:47 at State. Heck, she even started quick during cross, hitting under 18:30 in her 2nd race ever. Of course, by November, she was quicker, dipping under 18:00 twice, the latter of which good for 15th in all of D1. Bucking the trend at a very high level.

And for Ava, that shows in multiple ways. One, being able to complete her junior track season at State as her sophomore version ended her season in late May. At the State Finals, she clinched a spot on a West Ottawa 4×8 team that was returning everyone from their title crew. With her 2:16 split, Porras played a major role in the Panthers’ successful title defense. And then in terms of time, nearly 20 seconds were erased from her previous 3200m best. On a squad with many quick moving parts, these West Ottawa girls push each other to get better in all aspects.

Regional Previews: Division Four Boys

Time to get cracking on these regional previews. As with the 50 Tickets, these are a bit condensed compared to past years. I found the writing was getting excessive, repetitive, and more work than the actual season. But still, regional projections are in order. I thought I’d highlight a few of the battles, tough regions, and outstanding individuals.

Division 4’s summer work will always be a bit off. For a solid segment of the schools, especially the private ones, there isn’t a feeder school. With that, some schools are underrated as I can’t discern who is going where. A few deserving schools might not be listed as they operated with a few runners last year, lost some to graduation, but don’t have five returners. D4 coaches are perhaps the best at creatively replenishing their roster, but I can’t predict those additions from my perspective.

Anyhow, here are your D4 Boys predictions. Similar to the 50 Tickets, these are based on last year’s XC season and track seasons, projected improvements, and a few bits of subjective shuffling.

Toughest Regions

Region 29 – absurdly deep, with eight teams in the pre-season top-33, six in the top-26. Frankfort, the projected 4th place team, would likely be a favorite to advance to Brooklyn in all 8 other regions. Heck, even Grand Traverse Academy, projected 7th here, would have a high chance of qualifying in over half of the other regions. This is a tough spot for regional site selection folks, as many of these D4 schools in the Traverse City area have many of the ingredients for XC success (coaches & culture obviously, but hills + dirt roads + affluence).

Region 36 – in the same boat as Region 29, this Metro Detroit region featuring six teams from the top-25. Royal Oak Shrine appears a solid step above the others. Gabriel Richard and Oakland Christian a few points above the rest, but it’s not as if Lutheran Westland, Frederick Douglass, and Cardinal Mooney aren’t within striking distance. All three of the latter teams would be favored to qualify in over half of the other regions.

Intriguing Battles

Region 30 – third qualifying spot. As of this moment, it appears that Saginaw Arts & Science, Beal City, and Michigan Lutheran Seminary are the squads in contention for the third spot. Last fall, the latter two earned trips down south, Arts & Science sat back in fifth. However, the Dragons return four of their five scorers.

Region 31 – third qualifying spot. Fowler, Gobles, Libertas Christian, and Hesperia are all separated in the state rankings by 7 spots. Their point total here has some differences, mainly because of Fowler’s projected depth – the Eagles seem to be able to put five in front of the listed others’ 4th or 5th runners.

Region 36 – third qualifying spot. As said above – Frederick Douglass, Cardinal Mooney, and Lutheran Westland would be in great position in many other regions, they’re gonna have to battle here. The challenge and heightened competition will make things fun. A team such as LW has already been taking steps to cut into the projected gap, with an athlete such as Seth Witte dropping toward 5-flat in the 1600m, a sign he’s gonna improve from his high-18 self.

Kyle Redman – 2023’s champion, he’s twice an All-Stater and coming off his first podium finish on the track

Ty Redman – shares many of the same accomplishments as his brother. Twice has medaled at MIS. Optimism abounds as he’s coming off a full track season that included a state qualifier in the 1600m.

Abraham Feeney – made tremendous gains from his freshman to sophomore years. Dropped 25+ seconds from his personal best, but more importantly, dropped 36 places in order finish 18th in all of D4.

Lincoln Laansma – an oncoming force toward the end of the past cross season. Through the midpoint of the season, had been averaging mid-17’s. Then come late fall, dropped into the 16’s, enough for an All-State finish. Owner of the 3rd fastest 3200m time in Michigan’s 2028 class.

Christian Getz – for two straight years, he’s saved his best times of that season for Region 31 or State. This past year’s version was a closer of 16:41, good for 29th in D4.

Noah Schipper – look for continued improvement from Schipper, as he’s one of 11 D4 returners to break 10:00 in the 3200m.

Jacob Ferdubinski – as a freshman, had evolved into a 3200m beast. That strength bled into a cross season where he was runner-up in both the CHSL Cardinal and here (to Cerone), then nabbed 15th at the D4 finals.

Joel Johnson – coming off an extremely successful track campaign where he grabbed All-States in the 800m & 1600m.

Vern Clyne – 23 times he toed the line prior to State, all 23 were 17:00 and above. His 16:59.3 at MIS broke that streak, then helped spur a track season where he earned his first ever individual qualifier.

A summer tradition returns.

Hard to fathom that I’ve been penning these Summer Previews for now, 7 years. Just as in the past, I’ll have the 50 best returners, then as time rolls on, the Regional Previews and Top Ten Teams.

Differing from the past is the format. Individual posts for each region and ticket are a TON OF WORK. Instead, I’ll be knocking off the 50 Tickets with sets of 10 and Regional Previews by their division and gender. Hopefully with these methods, I’ll be finishing on time and actually spending effort detailing what could be some great regional battles.

Anyhow, starting with the girls (they run first this year), your 50 Tickets to Brooklyn. These celebrate our top-50 returners – based on the 2024 XC season, 2025 track season, projected improvement, and a tiny bit of my own opinions.

His Championship Season

On the track this spring was spent getting incrementally faster. Lennox entered May with a 1600m best of 4:24 and a 3200m of 9:52. Starting at the SVL Championships and ending at Nike Nationals, things got better and better. He earned a 4×8 qualifier with his Powers teammates and two on his own. The 1600m qualifier gave him an opportunity to PR at State and the 3200m qualifier gave experience in tripling at Michigan’s highest level, something he’ll likely be doing in the future.

His Championship Season

In cross was by far his best one yet. All year, Gal had been showing glimpses, such as a 16:20 at Spartan and his first ever sub-16 at Allendale. Come October, the times and honors started flowing – 15:53 at Portage, top-10 finishes in both the OK Red and Region 1. The end of all that was truly the special one, a significant personal best at State that was coupled with Aron’s first All-State ever.

His Championship Season

Contained win after win. Morgan already had experience winning, capturing the CAAC Blue crown as a sophomore. One championship win as a sophomore transformed into three as a junior. He claimed Lansing-area supremacy at Greater Lansing, then went up the road to Shepherd and knocked off many from the wide-ranging Region 2. Confidence gained from the previous weeks definitely aided Ian at MIS, as he jumped nearly 50 places to grab a podium spot.

His Championship Season

Showed that Abraham had one of the bigger gaps from fall to spring. Whereas McHugh placed 47th at XC State, he was 8th in Division 2’s 3200m. I know the field is smaller and some appear in other events, but no matter which way you shake it, that’s a leap. If we’re thinking on a year to year basis, McHugh subtracted over 30 sec. from his 3200m and 12 from his 1600m.

His Championship Season

Used the championship experience from the previous year and expounded upon it. In 2024, the Lindens and Essers teamed up for a great 4×8, earning the Redhawks a medal at State. Unafraid of big stages as a junior, Linden took advantage of every opportunity to get back to East Kentwood. He was victorious in the long distance double at Region 10 and helped his Athens teammates make a return trip in the 4×8.

His Championship Season

Expounded on the ability that he displayed at the close of his sophomore season. Toward the end of his sophomore season, Keller had barely scraped under the 16-flat mark. When it came time to run fast as a junior, he was solidly beneath that. First, league titles were to be won, as Caleb claimed his first Big North crown. Getting that out of the way, he dropped two 15:4x’s, placing 2nd in Region 2 and grabbing the final podium spot at MIS.

Came at the culmination of a trying year. Switching schools, running for himself, a less headstrong runner may have given up hope of progress. Not Jazwinski, who took advantage of quick west side fields in order to establish new personal bests – 1:59 for the 800m and 4:17 for the 1600m. If he can do that on his own, just imagine if he’s running for something.

His Championship Season

Was, like the other years of his career, full of heroics. Back in 2022, Harper made a name for himself with a clutch regional performance that got his Chieftains to State. A faster version has emerged for the past two seasons, one that was able to hit All-State for the first time as a sophomore. He doubled down on that greatness with wins at Macomb County and Region 9, brought home another podium finish, then rattled off his fastest time of his career at MITCA.

His Championship Season

May have sealed a state championship. Nope, not in cross, because his Falcons dominated in D2. But in track, where a sudden drop in the 800m undoubtedly helped Allendale clinch a state title. He had shown mid-distance prowess at various spots in his career – 54.9 in the 400m as a freshman, breaking 2:00 in the 800m as a sophomore. As of May 26th, he hovered around that 2-flat mark, but a day later, he had dropped 5+ seconds from his sophomore best. In a pressure-packed anchor leg with Good, Dixon, Bidwell, Gross, and Larson bearing down on him, the 1:53 Ronnie was enough for Allendale’s distance crew to claim another team title.

His Championship Season

Was the fastest stretch that Andrew has put forth in his career. He’d had individual races that were close in speed – a surprise 16:21 at 2022’s regional to help the Giants in an upset, a few 16:0x’s as a sophomore. Earlier in the year, Wright had found his way into the 15’s. In late October and November, he made himself a home there. 15:37, a personal best, was his best SMAC finish ever.
