50 Tickets to Brooklyn: Girls 40-31

A summer tradition returns.

Hard to fathom that I’ve been penning these Summer Previews for now, 7 years. Just as in the past, I’ll have the 50 best returners, then as time rolls on, the Regional Previews and Top Ten Teams.

Differing from the past is the format. Individual posts for each region and ticket are a TON OF WORK. Instead, I’ll be knocking off the 50 Tickets with sets of 10 and Regional Previews by their division and gender. Hopefully with these methods, I’ll be finishing on time and actually spending effort detailing what could be some great regional battles.

Anyhow, starting with the girls (they run first this year), your 50 Tickets to Brooklyn. These celebrate our top-50 returners – based on the 2024 XC season, 2025 track season, projected improvement, and a tiny bit of my own opinions.

Her Championship Season

Went by in very similar fashion to 2023’s version. Victory after victory after victory. Early October saw one of Schreiber’s first attempts at running with the best from the Lower Peninsula, an 18:36 personal best at Portage. By the end of the season, she had taken that speed and found another level with a 18:03 at MITCA. In between the 30+ sec. drop were wins within her conference and a 2nd UP Division 3 State Title.

Her Championship Season

Was when her initial foray into the 18’s began and never stopped. Early in the 2024 season, May had shown she was a different runner than her freshman version. The same invites from year to year emitted faster times – Cedar Springs, Muskegon CC, Sparta, Central Montcalm. As the calendar flipped to October, those faster times turned in the 18 min. variety, with a top-10 Portage finish, the first ever girls River Cities champion, multiple low-18 efforts, and an All-State honor.

Her Championship Season

In the past two years is where she’s shined bright. A pure example of that was her freshman jaunt into the 19’s at MIS. Alyssa’s 19:37 was nearly a 30 sec. personal best that almost got her on the podium. A year later and almost a minute faster, she did get there in 2024. Hard to believe, but the 18:39 found in Brooklyn wasn’t her best time of the year – as Kramer ran faster at Greater Lansing, Portage, and Region 24.

Her Championship Season

This spring contained her first experiences within the Michigan scene. Georgia picked up tons of points for her Eddies at Team State, grabbing 8th place finishes in the 1600m and 3200m to go along with two top-10 relay placings. Individually, she was able to qualify in what may be her signature event, the 800m. A 2:17 from early May got Babcock in, then a month later, she placed 16th in D2. A good lil’ intro to our competitive arena.

Her Championship Season

Sticking to the track, ‘cause Clara dispensed greatness individually and as a fellow Falcon. The Freeland 4×4 and 4×8 squads attained early qualifiers, and thus were teams capable of contending for a medal. Capable is one thing, getting it done is another, and both placed within the top-8. Even with a race under her belt, Clara found a hit a season’s best in the D2 State 1600m, good enough for 8th in the division. Speaking to her mental toughness is the fact that she didn’t come within reach of her lifetime best all year, but still found the motivation to compete.

Her Championship Season

Over the course of her career, LaMarra has notched two All-States, a KLAA crown, and a Regional crown. I guess that goes to show you how her late season turned out. 2024’s iteration contained her first regional win, a nearly 10 sec. victory and personal best on the always tough Holly course. Her 18:19 there was just a precursor to another lifetime best, an 18:14 at MIS, good for 27th place.

Her Championship Season

Was the spot where Avery popped some big drops. A hint of that greatness was seen at late September’s Otsego Bulldog. That was her first time under 19:00, a barrier that was no longer a barrier for the rest of the fall. With all those 18-min. efforts, Avery accrued runner-up finishes in the OK Black and at Region 11, then beat even those with a personal best at MIS, good for 4th in all of Division 2.

Her Championship Season

Over the next three years, she’ll have plenty of races on her home, Portage course. And the evidence from the past year seems to indicate that Avery will be bringing her best material. Lingering around the 19-min. mark for much of September, Scott busted out a magnificent personal best at her home invite, a 18:21. Finishing top-10 in D1 there, she used the confidence and speed to attain back-to-back runner-up finishes at the SMAC Championship and at Region 3.

Her Championship Season

Kayla may have had the greatest gap from track’s regular season to its postseason. Donning the Martian blue and yellow, Shellenbarger finished her freshman year with personal bests of 2:16, 5:00, and 11:21. All impressive and good enough to give us a girl that won her regional 3200m, then placed 4th in D2 in the 800m and 1600m. But they’re a far cry from her bests a few weeks later – 2:11, 4:56, and 10:55. The 800m is easily the most impressive, ranking #13 amongst all the nation’s freshman and giving Kayla a win in the New Balance freshman race.

Her Championship Season

Precipitously downward went those times. Even extending into mid-October, Charley was hanging around the mid-19’s. Very satisfactory for any freshman, as she obtained wins in all of the Downriver League jamborees and an invitational win at Huron. But apparently McKay wasn’t gonna settle for mid-19’s. The Lake Erie course typically runs a little fast, but surely didn’t predict the 19:01 she’d drop in order to qualify for State. And just getting to State wasn’t nearly enough, as she blasted another 44 sec. off her best to finish at 18:17, 29th in all of Division 1, the #7 freshman girl.

And in Lucas’s case, I’d point to the drastic reduction from where he started, an 18:48 debut at Huron Meadows to a 16:05 personal best at this past year’s KLAA Championship. The quickening is also noticeable in the races he’s run, being on the varsity squad on Plymouth’s state team these past two years and not making it as a freshman. He’s realized some drastic jumps on the track, too, hitting sub-10 in all but two of his 3200m’s from this spring. 2024’s version was the complete opposite, above 10:00 in all but two races.

And for Grayson, that was very evident on the track. Huge jumps in everything – 7 seconds in the 800m, 13 in the 1600m, then over 30 sec. in the 3200m. Whereas Rorick didn’t crack even the top-15 in the single event he qualified for in 2024, he got podium stances in the two individual events he competed in this past spring.

And Brody qualifies in many ways. One from his debut, a 19:35 way back at 2022’s Mike Jackson Memorial Invite. Fast forward two years and he was starting his season in the 16’s, then finishing in the 15’s. A week prior to his 15:55 PR, Karg attained a 16th place finish at MIS, more than 60 places better than two years prior.

And Ryan’s timeline is as good as any. Stojov was running above the 18 min. mark through a chunk of his sophomore year, then the avalanche occurred. Baaarely above 17 to close that season. 4:24 for four laps that following spring. Contributor to another Northville state title last fall. A few months back, top-20 Michigan marks in the 800m and 1600m. Northville has a great talent pool, but they’re also home to a hard-working kids looking to develop.

And Coach Spina’s been turnin’ Hornets into speedsters for decades. LaRusso began his Saline career at a quick level, hitting 4:30’s in the 1600m, a mark that’s turned into a bunch of 4:20’s. But his improvement over eight laps are what might prove very useful for this upcoming season. Prior to this spring, Brennan had only competed in the 3200m once in his career. He made a habit of it this past year, running five of ‘em. Three of those were sub-10, the best a 9:43, nearly 90 seconds better than the lone occasion of his sophomore year.

That’s what happens when you grow from a freshman running in the mid-17’s to a sophomore debuting with 16:19 at Portage Central. That opener was no fluke, as Huhn backed up that up with quite a few 16:1x efforts.

And Donovan’s came with increased strength. It may have been gained in cross, where Donovan won conference and county titles that he’d never won before, going along with dropping 30 sec. from his freshman best. Could’ve been this past winter. Whatever it may be, it was shown on the track. A 1600m personal best of 4:56 was absolutely shattered, as Ryan turned into a Trojan that produced multiple 4:2x’s, including a D2 All-State place.

Drastic is an apt word. Later in his freshman campaign, Zach proved he had the quality of what may be a great contributor. Early though, that didn’t appear to this watchful eye. Above 20:00 for his first three races, above 22:00 for the debut. But similar to many on this list, he lessened his times quite rapidly. More than four minutes were subtracted by the end of his first year, greater than six have fallen since August of ’22. More drastic drops to come as well?

Any time there’s a sophomore winning a track title, some rapid jumps had to occur. For Eaton, 2025’s Division 3 3200m champion, the event was sort of an afterthought as a freshman. He raced it only twice, both north of 10:00. Concentration was on the shorter distances, and rightfully so, as Eaton ascended to one of Michigan’s top 9th graders. A year in the future, Hunter debuted with a sub-10, then a few weeks later, dropped a shiny new 9:28 personal best. He kept racking up 9:xx’s before winning the first of what may be many state titles.

What about in the course of a season? Conference meets are always a solid point of comparison. The same athletes are competing, usually 2-3 weeks apart. During the first two River Cities jamborees, Hill placed 9th. Come late October, that became a 4th place finish. A better piece of evidence may be time, where Mason’s transformation over the course of the 2024 season was readily apparent. 17’s to 16’s to his final resting place, a 15:24 that cemented Allendale’s state title.

A summer tradition returns.

Hard to fathom that I’ve been penning these Summer Previews for now, 7 years. Just as in the past, I’ll have the 50 best returners, then as time rolls on, the Regional Previews and Top Ten Teams.

Differing from the past is the format. Individual posts for each region and ticket are a TON OF WORK. Instead, I’ll be knocking off the 50 Tickets with sets of 10 and Regional Previews by their division and gender. Hopefully with these methods, I’ll be finishing on time and actually spending effort detailing what could be some great regional battles.

An 18:29 at the 2024 Portage Invite. She had already slipped under 19 at the tail end of her freshman year, but this was truly a time drop. Her October opener kicked off a stretch where she ran in the 18’s in five of her final six races, including an 18:06 at MIS that was good enough for an 8th place finish.

You pick – either Jackson or Ottawa Hills from this past season. Both were sub-19 efforts, nearly matching her previous PR from 2023. But both were facing many of the runners she’d see in early November and were undoubtedly a great preparation for that stage. Ava then succeeded in that realm, blasting an 18:40 personal best that sets her up well for this upcoming season.

Breakout Race

Her opener at St. Joseph. Throughout her career to that point, Holtz had been more of a track star, dropping 2:16’s, 5:13’s, and grabbing podium spots. Solid on the grass, but more accomplished on the oval. Her 18:55 to kick off the 2024 season brought on a season full of her best cross accomplishments. Highest placings at State, Regionals, and in the Wolverine Conference to go along with a 40 sec. personal best.

Breakout Race

Switching to the track, the 2:14 from Distance Night. Running amongst the state’s best and prime D1 competition, Isom hung right in there, placing 5th and attained the added confidence needed for the following week. For those D1 Finals, Isom wasn’t in a favorable position, needing to hit a time from the first section. But she harkened back to her previous performance, notching another 2:14 in a section win, good enough for 9th in Division 1.

Breakout Race

The first of the championships. Racing for the Bulldogs, you’re in the mecca of cross country, surrounded by high-level programs and cultures. These come to a head during championship season, kicked off for the Orange n’ Black at the KLAA final. Bennett Park ain’t an easy track, but Lorenz laid down her best time of the year to that point, placing 9th and proving she had the championship mettle that’ll be needed in future years.

Breakout Race

It feels like there’s been a career full of them. But I think that Emmerson’s (and Romeo’s) 2022 State Finals set the stage for these past few years. The Bulldogs finished 2nd that year, a major part of that finish being Clor’s 19th place finish. Her time of 18:47 wasn’t anything outstanding compared to future efforts, though it signaled that she’s a reliable girl in key moments.

Elliana was at a whole new level in 2024, all fall long. So only naturally, her opener at Under the Lights. Two years in the past, she had commenced the season with a 21:26. Last August, that was a 19:53. As the season wore on, that 19:53 blossomed into a low-19 at Greater Flint and then a 18:43 at MIS.

The Eagles had a championship-worthy squad that year and Scholma’s improvement would have been an added benefit. Who could’ve foreseen the runner she turned into? A 5:30 1600m in her 9th grade track season gave us a glimpse, but it sure didn’t foretell a 18:51 sophomore debut. From that point on, she’s broken 19 on plenty of occasions and nabbed a MIS podium finish.

Breakout Race

Very rare can a girl point to a 17:xx on her resume. Hailey can, thanks to a massive 17:53 at Stockbridge. The course always runs fast, even in spite of that, it’s an impressive mark. Creisher finished 2nd behind the venerable Emmry Ross and ahead of Eliza Bush (both D1 runners, which should let you know of Creisher’s ability). The time was over a 90 second course PR and without a doubt contributed to the confidence that led to a 6th place finish in early November.

Breakout Race

The easy selection might be her 10:53 in the 3200m at Farmington. In the weeks and months prior, Siene developed the tools necessary to race so aggressively. Winter mileage, day after day, led to an indoor 1600m PR. Coming back to racing in April, another positive data point in the speed department came from an 800m best at Oak Park. A perfect set up for a breakthrough at Elaine Leigh, in which Siene came through with a 5:10 in the 1600m. Two weeks later, the immaculate 10:53. Trust me, she’s working to prove she can bring in on the grass as well.
