MIXC vs. REALITY

Poor damn Forest Hills Eastern. Come in as the #12 team, leave without a state qualifying team in this monster of a region. Thankfully, with three powerhouses up front, additional qualifying spots went far back, all the way to 19^th, and three of the Hawk girls were able to advance.

With such up front strength, there was a high chance that the chalk would move on and that they did. Regardless, the Grand Rapids South Christian Girls performed their usual task of proving the numbers wrong. Commonly, that’s advancing when not expected. Now it’s winning where I didn’t see it coming. Two girls jumped off the page with considerable PB’s – Isabelle Oostema and Annalise Wiltjer. With the regular season starting and ending at home, you got a point of comparison. Oostema debuted at UtL with a 20:51 and dropped more than a minute to her 19:43 here. After beginning the year in the 21’s, Wiltjer joined her in the 19’s with her 19:54.

Two other individuals deserve a little mention:

Ava Benedict, Ionia – projected 30^th, placed 17^th. At each step of the season, the sophomore has shown improvement from the previous fall. At Spartan, that was a four-minute drop. Greater Lansing, nearly two of ‘em, baaarely missing out on a sub-20 (which came the following week). And the best of all, moving up 28 places here and ensuring her place on Saturday’s starting line.

Owen Moore, Portland – projected 29^th, placed 13^th. South Christian isn’t his home course, but it sure must feel like it. He’s raced here on multiple occasions over the past two years, each of them in the 16’s. His fastest performance still holds – 16:24 from 2024’s regional. But Saturday’s was pretty dang close, a 16:37 season best and his best regional placing ever.

The only region where, in both races, I had to subtract seconds from an athletes’ time!

MIXC vs. REALITY

The teams projected to advance were the teams that actually advanced. In the same order as well. Judging by the scoring, a few squads out-performed expectation – both of the winners, the Pinckney Girls and Fenton Boys, along with the Detroit Country Day Boys, who nearly moved into 2^nd. Beyond the places, I’m of the opinion that the teams here will perform better at MIS relative to the other teams in the Lower Peninsula. The adversity of MIS is nothing compared to the Linden hills, while that rise before 2 miles may seem massive to the flatlanders.

Especially impressive conquering the Linden hills were:

Elliana Hufton, Lake Fenton – projected 18^th, placed 10^th. She’s made her hay in the spring, a mid-distance star. Now she’s put down her best month ever of XC. Three consecutive races in the 20’s, her first time back in that range since August of ’24. A personal best two weeks back. And her best regional finish ever, 15 spots ahead of last year.

Ben Sushynski, Linden – projected 28^th, placed 21^st. Two years in a row, he’s brought his best material on regional day. Last year, he dropped a massive 30+ second PB at Holly, this year he just slipped under his new PB on a much tougher course.

MIXC vs. REALITY

On the quick Clintonwood course, the girls’ qualifiers went as expected, at least in terms of the teams. What was unexpected were the Rochester Adams Highlanders pulling off a victory, clinching the regional title on the sixth runner. That sixth girl was Maddie Deering, who has been coming into her own at the tail end of her freshman fall. She’s been sub-21 in her past three races, her improvement the key in Adams taking home a trophy.

The surprise was in the race expected to be exciting. Three teams were thought to be in contention for two spots, separated by a single point. Both the Oxford and Rochester boys had runners come in clutch. For the Wildcats, you can point to Matthew Buchanan, a senior who has dropped significant margins in each season of his career. He’s had a progression from the 22’s in 2022 to a 16:20 here in 2025. For the Falcons, their 5^th guy was the necessary closer. Alonso San Vicente Lugo wasn’t on Rochester’s varsity lineup for the 2024 regional, but his PROM race showed someone who can perform on the Clintonwood course, a personal best of 18:11. A year later, he laid down another PR, dropped 25 seconds from his previous PB.
