MIXC vs. REALITY

Region 25’s Girls race was another one of those chaotic ones and it lived up to the billing. Six girls teams were thought to have a chance, and three from that six advanced (just not the ones projected 😉).

Saginaw Valley Lutheran kept up the momentum from their Saginaw County race. The Crusaders were especially strong through four girls, which opened up enough of a difference that no team was able to come back on. Lindsey Cmeyla was especially impressive at the very top, earning her second straight top-10 finish here in Region 25.

Caro grabbed the other spot. The Tigers entered the race with a 29% chance, buoyed by an outstanding effort at Thumb Area. Jocelyn Tetil was a difference maker. The Caro freshman was the best #2 girl in the field (and heck, would’ve been many squads’ #1). Tetil raced to a 38 sec. PB and dropped over 100 sec. from the last race she had here at Wagener Park.

Region 35’s girls race also had a bit of an underdog advance – the Dryden Girls. Mid-season additions added the numbers the Cardinals needed, their league championship proved that training was working, then regionals was the capper of it all. The projections had three of the Dryden girls in the top-12, but definitely not three in the top-8. In her first regional ever, Ella Gustner shaved over 30 sec. off her personal best (and 57 sec. from her prior race here), helping give Dryden enough of a cushion to safely advance.

Some boys had a day, especially:

Gage Spencer, Beaverton – projected 17^th, placed 10^th. They might have moved the stage halfway across the state, but that had no impact on Spencer’s ability to perform on regional day. Spencer found his way into the very low-17’s for the second race in a row and qualified for MIS for the second year in a row.

Steven Budreau, Mayville – projected 20^th, placed 13^th. The freshman has come into his own in October. Prior to his races this month, Budreau had been sub-20 once. Since then, he’s gotten there on every occasion, including a 40+ sec. personal best on Saturday.

MIXC vs. REALITY

It was an even split with regard to the projections vs. reality. Projecting the team qualifiers was entirely accurate for one race of each gender and one race of each division. Who defied the numbers? A new one, the Southfield Christian Girls and a repeat, the White Lake Lakeland Boys.

First off, credit to Gavin Johns for gutting it out there on Saturday. His regional race was only his 3^rd race of the year, but an experienced senior knows the feeling of racing pain. While the Eagles comfortably made it, other Lakeland boys played their role as well. Sophomore Owen Nelms wasn’t even on the Lakeland regional squad last year. He’d been a steady mid-17 runner for much of the year until the LVC Championship, where he notched his first 16:xx ever. Saturday’s race was right on that level, showing that Nelms is comfortable in a tough moment.

Competing in the MIAC against the D4 favorite Whitmore Lake, championship moments weren’t really in the cards for Southfield Christian. But those Eagle girls sure approached this race with vigor, especially Caramia DeGiulio. The junior, running cross for the first time ever, had been >24:00 for much of the fall, save for her last two races, both in the 23-minute range. She and Ella Clarke were enough of a frontrunning duo to stay steady with Austin Catholic before the SC depth clinched it.

Beyond those two squads, two individuals brought it as well:

Claire Lawrence, Bloomfield Hills – projected 18^th, placed 6^th. With Claire’s herculean effort, the Blackhawks *almost* pulled off the upset. The Bloomfield Hills freshman had been performing at a high level all year, grabbing All-County and All-League honors, but still staying above 19:30. That is, until Saturday’s 18:54.

Micah Arlow, Cardinal Mooney Catholic – projected 9^th and placed 9^th. Par for the course for his year, but he’s such a different runner than he was the past two years. Each of the past two years, Arlow has chopped 2 min. off his best, moving from the mid-21’s to the mid-17’s. Saturday’s performance wasn’t a personal best, only the culmination of a dedicated few years.

MIXC vs. REALITY

Reality matched what was projection, at least on the team side of the action. Minus a bit of uncertainty from the girls’ side of Region 34, that was to be expected. Thus, you get writeups of individuals that outperformed the numbers, such as:

Lillian Ambler, Homer – projected 19^th, placed 12^th. Running for Illinois College next fall, Ambler has had the best year of her career. Her 20:55 here wasn’t only a personal best, it was her first ever state qualifier.

Naika Rath, Hudson – only the 3^rd XC race of her career, a race so good she gets to go for a 4^th time. If you’ve heard the name before, it’s because Rath is an 8x All-Stater on the track, mostly in the sprints, with the occasional long jump mixed in there as well.

Hunter Walker, Quincy – projected 23^rd, placed 19^th. A year ago, Walker slipped under 19:00 for the second time ever, running a personal best of 18:53. A season later and he left Sharp Park with another PB, a 17:02.

Jacob Tatsak, Adrian Lenawee Christian – projected 16^th, placed 11^th. Another huge improvement from year to year. His entire freshman resume included races over 20 min., most of them 21+. Only one of those dotted his sophomore portfolio. Many in the 18’s or 19’s before a wowing 17:37 here.
