In the course of throwing together a preview for next year’s XC season, I’ve been looking at track times. They’re a factor in my preseason predictions, not as important as last year’s XC ratings, but a factor nonetheless.
From previous seasons, I’ve compared 1600 and 3200 times from runners in the spring to XC ratings the next fall (they’re actually pretty consistent from what you’d find on a VDOT table).
Using the comparison, I’ve been able to assign some very simple formulas to convert track times into ratings. Applying these formulas and the wondrous athletic.net database, I’ve taken the results from this season and recast them in an XC scoring format.
Here’s how it breaks down:
Grade = this year
Time = rating converted to an MIS-type course (well, without the mud pit before the finish line)
