We’re baaaack after a BIG weekend!
These are compiled and computed using the ratings from the meets here, including those from this weekend that haven’t been posted. You’ll notice that smaller meets are missing, as are a few of the league meets. I picked and chose what felt applicable, of course with a human making those decisions, that affects the ratings a bit. Also, since the Huron Invitational wasn’t up by Saturday at 9pm, I didn’t get a chance to add it. As of now, it appears the meet has been uploaded to athleticnet and thus will be factored in next week.
As a rule, I take the upper 2/3 of a runner’s profile and weigh those ratings, more weight given towards more recent races. This creates a scenario where over the weekend, a runner may not have had their best race this season, but could be better than their worst effort of the season. With that, they may pass a runner that beat them on Saturday, so keep in mind that these are cumulative and not just based on the most recent result.
There will be some cases where Runner A beats Runner B at a race, but Runner B is ranked higher. Commonly, this will happen because runner B ran exceptionally elsewhere, or perhaps Runner A ran less than exceptionally elsewhere. As we get further in the season and obtain more data, these instances will decrease.
I’d like to give a shoutout to at least one boy/girl from each Division, usually someone who made their first appearance or wasn’t projected so high in the summer preview. I will tend to write more about upperclassmen, but can always make exceptions. Please know that if you’re not written about, it’s not that I hate you. It’s just that I don’t have time. If you want to brag about your athlete or child or teammate, write up something and I’ll share it.
Have fun with these and show love towards others. If I catch any of y’all slippin’ on that, I’ll force you to unstuff every shoe at Hansons Running Shop.

Dakota Dykhus, Montabella: Probably the best early September that Dakota has had in his career. His races at Trent Carter and Beal City were both a good chunk faster than his 2021 times. Based on these early season performances, he’s a good bet to return to the medal stand in Brooklyn, a feat he was able to accomplish in 2020.

Ben March, St. Louis: Ben has known greatness both with his Shark teams and as an individual. Two consecutive team state titles and two All-State finishes. But I don’t know if he’s had a three race stretch such as this in his career. Three sub-17’s including a win in the Small Division at John Bruder.

Madeleine Hill, Saranac: We knew Madeleine was in for a special fall given her opener, this just confirms it. First time in the 18’s for this senior. As I noted in the summer, she made a colossal jump during track, showing range from 2:19 to 11:24. This early cross-country success is the culmination of that foundation laid in the spring.

Carter McCalister, Monroe Jefferson: Carter’s progression throughout his career can be inspirational to all. He began his career in a manner that many freshmen do, a 19:46 at Milan. That became a sub-18 at the end of the 2019 season, a sub-17 as a sophomore, and now sub-16. That 15:47 on Saturday won the Bronze race, which consisted mainly of his D2 competition.

Emma Janesak, Sparta: A familiar locale was the spot for Emma’s best race of her season, wait, her career. An 18:55 at the Sparta Invite was her first ever sub-19 effort. She’s coming off her first track season for the Spartans, the 2:29/5:23 attained in the spring is surely a help to her cross-country performance.

Seth Norder, Grand Haven: Just as in June, Seth showed his mettle and toughness in the latter stages of an elite race. Battling for 3rd at the Spartan Elite 2-mile mark, he nearly snatched the victory from Connor Ackley. In the process, he nailed the second sub-15 effort by a Michigan kid this season and vaulted himself up these D1 leaderboards.

Madison Clor, Romeo: This season, I’ve attended two of Madison’s three races and just love her aggressive mindset. Taking it from the gun, setting a blistering pace early, and daring others to come along. With three victories in three races, no one has been able to do so yet.

Ella Fure, Marquette: Ella surely benefitted from the blazing fast field at Spartan, cruising to a 35 second personal best. It takes a special someone to rise to the occasion in a big field, Marquette will be glad to have her for the next 3.5 years.
