How Right/Wrong Was I? 10/12 on teams, those 3rd place D2 teams forcing their way in. Corunna’s Boys and Owosso’s Girls – well done. 60/72 on Saturday’s meets thus far.

DEALIN’ AT DEWITT

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Jaxon Strauch, Corunna: Jaxon’s two seasons competing for the Cavs have started in similar fashions, his first few meets running near the 20 min. mark. They’ve finished oh so differently. Beginning in October, he’s been on a tear, starting with an 18:00 effort at Greater Flint. He nearly equaled that mark at Shiawassee County, then broke through the barrier with a 17:54 here.

Claire Agnew, Owosso: Comparing yourself to others can sometimes be a negative. Comparing yourself to past versions of yourself, that’s a great show to see how far you’ve come. Her junior year ended at Regionals in 23:19, a 39^th place effort. Her senior year ain’t ending at Regionals, thanks to a 21:21 that grabbed her 31^st, but more importantly, moved the Trojans into the 3^rd slot.

Miingen Bertrand, Ithaca: The Yellowjackets had a DAY and you can point to anyone for their upset victory. Miingen in particular has been surging these past few weeks. Three consecutive sub-18 performances, each a PB in their moment. What may be the most incredible stat of all is his regional race was his best placing of the year, with a bigger field than average, you normally never see that. He placed 7^th, helping Ithaca put 4 runners in front of anyone’s 2^nd runner, earning the Yellowjackets another trophy.

Alexis Spitzley, Ovid-Elsie: A goal she had in mind for two years, Alexis qualified for the State Meet. She’s faced her fair share of adversity, befallen by Covid late in 2021, tearing her ACL, MCL, and meniscus prior to the spring track season. A lesser woman may have folded, given up hope, hung up the cleats, and said it wasn’t meant to be. Alexis returned to training in the summer, both on the roads and in the gym, training smarter rather than pushing the envelope. Fast forward to regionals, Alexis was finally able to compete, overcoming those past setbacks, finishing 12^th.
