Stepping into the fray with immediate success for the Byron Center Bulldogs has been Jayden Brock. He’s competed in three events this year, his first high school experience on the track, and he’s made an impact in each of those areas. In the 100m, he’s broken 12, in the high jump, he’s been as high as 6’2. But the long jump is the best of that trio. Three competitions, three wins, one of those being 22’3.

Whereas those Mason girls have the team covered, Tyler Baker can score points to match any other team. Thus far in 2023, he’s picked up victories in both hurdle events and both jumps. The Panther Invite itself saw Baker drop 36 points, with two golds and two silvers. His main event over the past three years has been the high jump. He’s qualified for State both in 2021 and 2022, finishing 11th each time. Is this the year he steps onto the podium?

Into June, past state and after all the dust settles, I plan to do some end of the season “awards”, recognizing the best athletes, just as I do these teams. Holden Van Poppel definitely catches my eye as someone that’s a candidate for all-around athlete. As these are, those will be all numbers-based, but wow his stats are tremendous. 15.37 in the 110h, 43.6 in the 300h, and 21’3 in the long jump. Each of those ranks in the top 20 in Division 3, the high hurdles and long jump are 3rd in the division.

Braden Prielipp, the defending state champion and likely one of the more unheralded, less talked about athletes is back, rounding into form. He turned the screws late last season, establishing a 3” PR at Regionals, then adding 2” more at State. The result, a 6’9 leap, a state title, nearly setting the state sophomore record. That jump is the highest by an underclassmen in Michigan during the athletic.net era and ranked 6th amongst sophomores nationwide. This season, he’s ahead of last year’s pace, hitting 6’4 twice, a mark he hadn’t touched in 2022 competition until mid-May. To which new heights can he soar this upcoming championship season?

First year of track as a senior? NBD to Pickford’s David Kozisek. Kosizek has competed in 11 individual events this year, ranging from the 55m indoors to the long jump outdoors, sprinkled in with a few hurdles for good measure. He’s won all but two of those. His best event thus far looks to be the long jump, his 21’4 leap winning the Superior Dome Invite 20+ inches.
