Back again with the final jump crew rankings of the regular season. Two weeks from now, I’ll be working on State Previews, then after the season, I’ll have a final ranking.
Anything included here had to be uploaded to athleticnet by Tuesday night.
There’s a cluster at the forefront of D1’s high jump and another name just got added to the list. In yesterday’s tri meet against Edsel Ford and Southgate, Woodhaven’s Ben Syverson added a whopping 4” to his previous best, grabbing the school record. We have video of it too! I like the festive atmosphere and encouragement, perhaps we can get that at the State Finals as well.

Two-time OK Gold Champ, 2022 All-Stater, and recent Michigan State commit Joseph Mullett is entering championship season better than he’s ever been. At the GR Elite Challenge, Mullett reached a height he’s never before found – 6’9”. That clearance polished off a 9” victory and is just one mark in an undefeated season that he looks to continue.

This past Friday night, the Sanford-Meridian jumpers sure showed out at their home Nite Trax Invite. Both Nickolas Metzger (long jump) and Sawyer Moloy (high jump) pulled off victories, each of the marks vaulting them into the state lead. Along with Brayden Riley and a few other sprinters, this is a team capable of scoring a substantial number of points in early June.

Early in the year, it was Anthany Buford launching a 22’ at Huron Relays. Then Mekhi Wingfield matched him in a conference meet in mid-April. Now here comes the defending state champ. Alex Affer is rounding back into form, evidenced by his 21’11 leap at Peck’s home invitational. As of this point last year, Affer had not broken 20’, he added a solid 2’ during championship season. If he’s in 21’+ shape now, imagine what he’ll throw down in a few weeks.

Gotta throw a big congrats towards Rapid River’s Ian Sundling. The defending D3 (and two-time All-State) long jump champ just soared past 20’ for the first time ever, adding to what’s shaping up to be a magnificent season. He’s undefeated in the jumps, claiming Delta County titles in each.
