Best Jump Crews: Girls Week Seven

Sad news – these are the final two weeks in the regular season of ranking the best crews.
Great news – two weeks from now, I’ll be working on my State Finals previews.
Somewhat decent news – after the State Finals, I’ll be putting together final rankings and individual awards.

Included in these rankings are marks uploaded to athleticnet by the second half of the Warriors/Lakers, aka the Lonnie Walker game.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Boots on the ground tell me that Madison Morson, had a few inches to spare in her clearance of 5’9 at Farmington. She has state meet experience, you may recall a great duel between her and Gabriella Newman, where Morson placed second. I always like to compare where an athlete was at this time last year. Morson was jumping 5’4, adding 4” in championship season. Combine those extra few inches, late season improvement, and championship experience, and she has everything possible ahead of her.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

What an otherworldly improvement from Milan’s Malea Wourman. As a freshman, she stayed under 5’0, hitting her best marks in mid-season with a string of 4’10s. At Manchester’s Metrics Invite, she dominated the high jump with a 5’3 win, vaulting her into a top-10 ranking in D2.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

I’m just looking ahead: if you’re a fan of the long jump, you need to head over to Region 25 or 26. Five of the top six long jumpers in Division 3 are in those two regions, all in that Irish Hills/Ohio border area.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Lifting her fellow Pumas into the top spot has been Sohanny Gonzalez-Castillo. All year, she’s been solid in the high jump, clearing 5’0 early and staying undefeated in Alliance League action. But her efforts in the long jump at the GR Elite Challenge are a recent astonishment. She bolted past the 16’ barrier, adding 14” to her previous best, nabbing a win against a D1-centric field. She’s now the D4 leader in the sand.

Showdowns & Throwdowns

Sprint star Danica Shamion just doesn’t compete on the oval, she clears bars too. Last week, at the Lakes Invite, her and Ellie Delene (4th place last year in Division 3, 2021 champ) went head to head. Shamion came away with a victory and Delene nearly matched her winning jump from a few years back. Each have a great chance to improve on their finishes from 2022.
