His Championship Season

This past spring was a return to the form we had seen in the past. Romero only had a few races for Grand Rapids Christian, but they were mostly all meaningful. In just three individual races over the two-lap distance, Romero managed to pick up a regional and league title. Passing the baton with his teammates, he went undefeated, teaming up for an OK White and Division 2 title. An exciting preview of what we may see come fall.

His Championship Season

This past spring contained his best close to a season yet. In May of ’25, Cochran proved he can spin his best material during championship time, claiming victories in the 800m & 1600m in the SVL, along with a regional 1600m win as well. This past spring, he took those honors a step further. After defending the league titles and taking home a regional 800m crown, Cochran proved he can run with the best in Michigan. In the 800m, he moved from 21st as a sophomore to 8th as a junior. His Chemic teammates came along for the ride as well, their 4×8 improving from 15th to 7th. May the positive momentum and progress continue into cross.

His Championship Season

In both cross and track, Matii’s had some tough races and successes, which makes him easy to root for. Some days haven’t gone his way, such as last fall’s State Finals or this spring’s 3200m at Regionals. During October, Tarekegn showed considerable progress from his sophomore year, moving from 12th to 4th in the perennially tough OK Red, continuing his season of many mid-15 efforts. Just two months back, he showed the ability to bounce back. Following a subpar regional performance, he came through at MITCA for his Falcons, delivering many critical points in the 3200m (along with nearly matching his personal best). Hopefully the lessons learned from his junior year can be applied to his senior season.

His Championship Season

Talk about putting it on the line for his team. At the Division 3 State Finals:

1600m – 4:21.5, 3rd place, 6 points
800m – 1:59.5, 6th place, 3 points
3200m – 9:29.3, 2nd place, 8 points

St. Mary Catholic Central won the D3 title with 39 points. Craanen contributed 17 of ‘em.

Then in accordance of being a great teammate, Christian was then able to find some great times of his own. The following week at MITCA, he lowered his personal bests from 4:21 to 4:18 and 9:29 to 9:13. Sacrifice, then reaping the benefits of that unselfishness.

His Championship Season

Proved the potential to be true. Elabed had been ripping it all season. He opened with a sub-17, then brought it to a new level a week later at Under the Lights. By mid-September, he was sub-16, by late September, welllll into the 15’s. But those fast times early don’t mean much if they’re not backed up. With an All-State, 5th place finish in a hellish region, and a 15:33 personal best at MITCA, Elabed affirmed that he’s a championship season factor.

His Championship Season

Demonstrated his wisdom and portrayed his progress. At a few points during the fall, Solgot had flashed his fitness, opening with a 16:12 at Lamplighter and on a trip north to Shepherd, unleashing a 15:31 to finish 7th in their loaded elite field. During the meets between those two were many wins, but not necessarily the fastest times. When it came time to earn crowns and prove it against Michigan’s best, Xavier used the energy saved from those conservative efforts. He won a trio of championships at Macomb County, MAC White, and Region 9 – dominating races captured by an average of 20+ seconds. At MIS, he sped to a beauty of a PR, his 15:18 good for 11th places. The selectively fast efforts underrate him by the numbers, but make no doubt, he’s a contender at every level.

His Championship Season

Was one where he had clutch races in big spots, but also experiences with the opportunity to grow in the future. One particular breakthrough was his regional performance in the 1600m. Coming into May 15th, his personal best in the event was a 4:24 from the beginning of May. The state qualifying standard was a 4:23, thus he’d have to turn in the best race of his life. McCormick did just that and crushed the standard, racing to a 4:20.9 (the 20th fastest mark of any 9th grader in the US). The State Finals didn’t go as well as that regional day, but the experience of competing at Rockford (and from MIS) will pay off in the coming years.

His Championship Season

Was the stretch of time where Caiden put everything together. Throughout his first two years at Vicksburg, Caswell was a runner that showed tremendous potential or was justtt on the cusp of doing great things. He’d run well into the 16’s as a freshman and popped into the very low-16’s early in his sophomore year, but that success hadn’t translated over to MIS. In 2025, he turned the corner. Set the stage for it at Otsego, ripping a 15:26 to win the D2 race. Backed that up on a steamy day at Portage, then captured the Wolverine Conference crown. And finally in early November, stepped onto the stage at MIS, placing 12th in D2. Much more of the same, perhaps even better, can definitely be achieved this fall.

His Championship Season

Had to be terrifying for any rival competitor. Ryan put himself on the map two years ago, significantly dropping under 2:00 in the 800m as a freshman, registering the 2nd fastest 9th grade mark of that ’24 season. He followed that up with an All-State on the grass, a runner-up 800m as a sophomore, and another podium this past fall. He’s always been progressing and this May was no shocker. What was shocking was the substantial amount of time he dropped. A 4:23 became 4:13, a 1:54 became 1:50. And with the times came two wins, two decisive and devastating kicks to win the D2 Finals in the 1600m and 800m.

*personal opinion time* Does his racing remind you of Trent McFarland? Really came on as a junior, wise tactics, and a kick that’s so lethal that if it’s close… it’s over. Just sayin’!

His Championship Season

It wasn’t just championship time, it was a season long endeavor for Nole. Fresh off a 9th grade year where hit the podium in the fall and threw down the fastest 3200m time of any freshman, Nole stepped up to the plate early in his sophomore season. Holly was the first major meet of the season, Springfield Oaks the spot where he hit a 16:12, 30+ seconds faster than he had a year prior. If you can run fast at Holly, you can run fast anywhere. And that’s what Lorenzen did the rest of the year, placing 3rd in Oakland County. Then closing the fall with five consecutive sub-16’s, including a 15:24 at Larry Steeb and a 5th place D3 finish.
