2026’s Summer Regional Projections: Division One

Regional projection time!

As with the 50 Tickets and the Top Teams (11-27 listed thus far), these are driven through a combination of last fall’s ratings, projected improvements (based on high school class and rating), and this past track season. They contain every cross returner and most of the 8th graders rising to the high school level (but not all, as not all middle schools feed to a specific high school).

In terms of feeder schools, Division One is pretty straight forward. Most of the middle schools recognizably flow to a high school. But there are exceptions where Ann Arbor schools don’t use athletic.net (I honestly believe this is a good thing) and the PCEP schools are more random. Thus, your Plymouth and Ann Arbor schools are probably underrated.

You may notice that these are more condensed than in previous years. I cannot fathom how I used to write posts for every single region! I just don’t have the time these days. But the projections are still here, even in a less wordy and less time-consuming format.

The girls rankings had to be shifted a bit to account for transfers into Romeo. So don’t come at me sideways for a shift from earlier in the summer.

Enjoy. Use as motivation, but always know, these are never personal. Just numbers.

Toughest Regions

Region 1 Girls

With three top-10 teams existing between Hudsonville, Rockford, and Jenison. It’s sort of unfortunate for squads such as Grand Haven and Grandville, who might have a chance at making it to State if placed some of the more eastern regions, but that’s not the case in this scenario where the west coast teams are extremely good. To give you an example of how tough the projected top-3 are, the three squads placed 6th, 11th, and 13th at MIS last year, and between them, return 16 of the 21 girls that competed. The team with the least (Jenison with 4) adds a MS girl who went 5:09/11:18 in track.

Region 2 Boys

Who have a whopping 7(!) teams in the top-27 in this wide-ranging region. I guess there weren’t any workable scenarios that put Fenton, Grand Blanc, Davison, etc. in more southern/Metro Detroit regions. Traverse City Central and Traverse City West couldn’t get placed in Region 1, else that’d be another impossible region if you added the Titan and Trojan girls to the paragraph above. Midland and Traverse City West appear to be a cut above the rest, leaving a scenario where one spot is available to five deserving teams. Traverse City Central, projected 7th, returns five boys that were sub-17:30 in 2025. That should give you an idea of the depth placed here in Region 2.

Region 3 Boys

If you recall last year, this was another terrifying region, entering regional day were 7 teams listed in the top-21. Advancing on were Lowell, Kalamazoo Central, and Caledonia – three teams that went on the place 8th, 3rd, and 12th, respectively. To give you a glimpse of just how strong last year’s version was, the 4th place team was Battle Creek Lakeview, by way of their top-five all hitting under 17:10. We know Portage is a fair course and we know times such as that indicate a worthy team.

Here we are again where it appears a deserving team will be left out. The depth doesn’t appear as strong as last fall, but the high-end talent is just as good. Lowell has state title aspirations, returning much young talent. Caledonia could summon their late-rise from last year, Kalamazoo Central has always been a championship season wrecker, and Portage Central will have revenge on their mind at home.  These four squads have 17 returners who were sub-17 last year. The Mustangs have the least, but also contain the most potential, with 4 freshmen (who tend to improve the most) running in the 17’s last fall.

Intriguing Battles

Region 8 Girls

Where its always seemingly been a barnburner. The 2022 version had the 3rd-5th place teams separated by 11 points, the 2023 version had 3rd and 4th with a 3 point gap (but Utica moving on by placing 4 in the top-20). Two teams remain from those wild days – Utica and Clarkston. Coming in from elsewhere are Hartland and White Lake Lakeland. Lakeland returns everyone from their state qualifying squad and Hartland brings back five from their 9th place D1 outfit. Which leaves Utica and Clarkston. The two squads appear evenly matched in terms of average time/rating. The Chieftains perhaps a bit stronger up front, the Wolves gaining their advantage through depth.

Also, never doubt Milford and Sal’s magic lurking there, projected in 5th.

Archer Verhage, Grand Haven

After all the 1600m success this past spring, very curious to see how that translates to the grass.

Josiah Derksen, Rockford

Halved his 2024 performance here, placing 8th when he was 16th the year prior.

First XC season came as a junior and Ethan was immediately accustomed to the 5k distance, racing in the 16’s almost all year.

Bradley Smies, Hudsonville

Brandon Cloud, Northville

Defending champion here and in the D1 3200m.

Devin Lau, Farmington

Rapid transformation as a junior. After sneaking under 17:00 at the tail end of 10th grade season, Devin one-upped himself by nearly a minute, dropping a 15:57 at MIS.

Lucas Mullan, Northville

A shortened sophomore season still saw Lucas contribute to the Northville title squad.

Brady Glon, Detroit Catholic Central

Yet another kid with a great season-ender, as Brady dipped into the 15’s at MIS to close out his sophomore year.

Trevor Baptist, Novi

A majority of his track races were of the 1600m variety, with a giant reduction in time, 4:47 to 4:33 from 10th to 11th grade.
