State Qualifier gloves were well-earned on Saturday

STEPPIN’ UP ON REGIONAL DAY

The second day of regional action at Columbus County Park was expected to be fairly straightforward as far as team action went, with one potential exception, the D2 girls race. The rise of Cranbrook-Kingswood over the course of the fall led to possible upset berth for the Cranes. Senior Diya Goyal once again bettered her previous best, running a 19:50 for another PR. Just a reminder, before this latest outburst into the 19’s, Goyal had been on the high side of 21:00 all fall. Her emergence gave the growth necessary to drive a 13-point gap ahead of the 4^th place team.

Regardless of the other races playing out as expected, there are still some individuals in need of praise:

Jessica LeFeve, Charyl Stockwell Academy – her 10^th grade season, the first of her career, has been non-stop progress. LeFeve’s last three races have all been personal bests, this latest one a 20:36 escapade that led to an MIS appearance.

Gideon Schneider, Clawson – just keeps getting better and better. As a freshman, largely ran over the 22-min. mark before closing with a 20:23 here. Two years later and he’s barreling toward the 17’s, thanks to a 30 sec. PR here in Region 26.

Griffin Kreger, St. Clair – stepped up in a huge way, racing to his first sub-17 of his career. Kreger was projected to place 17^th, which would’ve been out of state qualifying contention. Instead, he was 12^th, 5 spots ahead of where he was last year, clinching a spot at MIS for the third consecutive year.
