Regional weekend is here! And hey, if you’re a throws fan, have the afternoon off, and live on the West Side, you may want to head over to Allendale to watch the Falcons compete against Coopersville.

Coming into his own of late has been senior Evan Berghorst. His first two years of throwing in high school contained zero points at the OK Green Championship. This past Friday, he won the discus, tossing a 146’er. That was a personal best, his second time in above 140, and a 20’ improvement from 2022.

Gave a shoutout to Dalton DeBeau last week, well Derrick Simmons is following right in his footsteps. The sophomore, in his first year of track, has made his most noticeable gains in the discus. He began the year throwing in the 130’s and now in championship season has ripped three consecutive 150’+ throws. One of those was this past Wednesday’s TVC-8 Championship, where he took home the gold.

A new team at the top and it’s mainly because of the theatrics of Maddox Gonzalez. The junior picked up 18 valuable points in the Panthers’ third place finish in the TVC-10. A first in the shot put (personal best and #6 rank in D3) along with a second in the discus (another personal best) and now Standish Sterling holds the top spot at the end of the regular season.

What’s going on over there in Aggie Land? Has the magic of Dave King been transferred onto the current regime? Why all these questions? My athleticnet research say his 43’4 on May 15^th was his first throw ever and Jamisen Latham now has a top-15 mark in D4. Looks like he’s entered for this weekend’s regional, surely there’s room for improvement after one competition. The rich get richer.

He was the 2022 Thrower of the Year and he’s returned to that top form. Last spring, Noah Johnson placed top-4 at the D1 Upper Peninsula Finals in both throwing events. As of May 12^th, with three weeks to go in the season, he’d already reached the marks that vaulted him to the medal stand. 41’6 in the shot and 136’4 at the Negaunee Lions Invite were both season bests, an excellent confidence boost heading into regional week.

As with the distance crews, I thought I’d write about a key contributor from each top team. Mariah Sackett has found a way to improve in each event in each of her past two seasons. Last year, she added 20+ feet to her discus. This spring, it’s been 6+ feet to her shot puts, from 32’ to 38’. That started almost immediately, throwing 35’ at the GVSU Laker Challenge. She’s kicked it up a notch these past few weeks, launching past 38’ en route to a win at Von Ins and an OK Green title.

Talk about peaking at the right time and being consistent while doing it. In her last three meets, Makenzie Johns has hit the three furthest throws of her life. Each of those 38’+ throws brought wins, but the most important of which came at the Big North Championship, which brings her career total to four.

Already wrote out some words for Sophia Snellenberger earlier in the season, thought I’d give some love to her outstanding teammate as well. In her three-year track career, Raigen Horsfall has earned four All-State honors and being ranked in the top-5 in both throws, appears she’s poised for some more. Two weeks ago today in a win against D4 standouts Reading, she tossed her best discus ever, adding 2’ to her previous best.

Abby Affholter has been a contributor out of the gates for the Rangers program. A sophomore in her first season of track, Abby has picked up wins in 5 of her 9 shot put competitions, including a victory at Ralph Crume in late April. After starting the year throwing below 80’ in the disc, she’s added almost 20’ to her throws, now in the mid-90’s.

Another one in her first season of track and finding immediate success is the Blue Devils’ Hannah Maurer. Sault Ste. Marie has spent a good bit of their track season south of the bridge and Hannah has stuck her nose right in those competitions, even beating the best from Petoskey and Traverse City Central in their dual. She currently ranks in the top-15 across the whole Upper Peninsula in both throws.

Just as the females, I’d like to mention a boy from each of the top teams. But Northville is the exception, fueled mainly by the magnificence of the 4×800 team. There have been different lineups over the past two years, but the main members have been: Brendan Herger, Brady Heron, David Whitaker, Brandon Latta, and Brock Malaikal. In 2022 and 2023, the Mustangs have been undefeated in any relay containing a combination of those five teammates. Not only are they unbeaten, they’ve raced to a few fast times, most notably a pair of 7:44.7’s, at last years State Finals and at this year’s Golden Triangle. I sure hope they can find competition late in the year – whether at MITCA or a national meet. Mid-7:30’s is not out of the question.

For the majority of the year, it seems as if I’ve been stating that Forest Hills Eastern is an “up and coming” program. There’s been reason for that, other than an Aiden Sullivan (take a look at his 400’s and pair with his miles, definitely a favorite to repeat in the 800m) and Alex Parker, the Hawks are mainly underclassmen. A few months back, we saw that development when the team placed 5^th in D2 State. This spring, we’re witnessing the transformation of a kid such as Henry Dixon,a sophomore in his first track season that’s run 4:23/9:20.

Likely influenced by his 2022 season, I’ve always thought of Clayton Ackley as an endurance beast. During his junior year, he placed 4^th in the D3 3200m, running a 9:33 personal best. At the time, his best 1600m was “only” 4:30, meaning he was running that 3200m about as close to his 1600m pace as you can get, a 17 second differential. Well this spring, he’s sprung upon some speed (maybe being in the presence of Ms. Maginity will do that to ya). He’s lowered his 100m time by a second, 800m by seven seconds, and 1600m by six seconds. Those gains have surely helped in his 8 lap races, where he’s whittled his personal best down to 9:23. But past results beg the question: how fast can he truly go with everything on the line? With five All-States in his career, you know he brings his best when it’s all on the line.

I agree with Jacob Tanner’s D4 State analysis here, that the Pumas will have a chance at a team title, but an uphill fight. One unexpected point scorer could be Noah Finton. Osterink, Swiney, and Rodriguez are almost guarantees to score significant individual points, but Noah has quietly started knocking on the door of 3200m contention. Unlike many of the top runners in the division, he’ll likely be fresh for the 3200m. He’s already dropped 50 seconds from his 2022 best. And he’s only run one race at that speed, surely there are some areas for improvement. It may be even be one point, but each and every one of them counts.

When you’re as dominating as Marquette, I tend to notice names. Vanderschaaf, White, Thomson, Papin. But one name throughout time that I haven’t noticed is James Barch. For two reasons mainly, he didn’t run cross country and his best 800m as a freshman was a 2:28. In this sophomore year, he’s already knocked a giant 16 seconds off that 800m, coming in at 2:12. Which by the way, is the third fastest time of any 10^th grader north of the bridge.
