The Top Tens: Division 4 Boys #5

This was supposed to be Saugatuck. Unfortunately, a rash of injuries and accidents have ravaged their team.

These previews, these writings, these posts are made with one main purpose: to preview and give attention to the best sport in the world, all summer long. With a massive undertaking, there are many assumptions to be made. The assumption of good health, that cross country runners keep running cross country, that kids from a town’s middle school attend that same town’s high school. Often these assumptions hold true, on a few occasions they fall flat.

So out of respect to the Bauers and their Trailblazers, this is the post. Given their past penchant for success, I have no doubt Saugatuck will be back and could very likely surprise us this season.

Top Returners

Lilah Kiley

Freshman dropped and dropped and dropped some more time, eventually ending up with a 19:45 over in Region 35.

Gracy Walker

In her last two years, she’s been top-5 at Region 35 and All-State twice, the latter of which moving up from 28th as a sophomore to 24th as a junior.

Meeghan Flikkie

Meeghan nearly halved her placing at MIS, moving from 109th to 56th, a key factor in her Cardinals attaining 4th place.

Molly Walker

Multi-faceted in her ability to compete in multiple events. This spring, she concentrated on the relays, short sprints, and even high jumped a few times. Look back to the fall, and you see a distance girl that improved all throughout the year, ending in a sub-21 at Regionals and top-60 spot at MIS.

Zoe Van Rijn

Wagener Park is her jam, the past three years setting her personal best on the course.

Hailey McGuire

9th grade season contained significant improvement, moving down into the 22’s when it started in the 27+ min range.

Potential Newcomers

Violet Tetil

Eighth grade year contained a few wins, such as North Park and in the NCTL, along with a few fast finishes, mid-12 efforts both early and late.

The Rundown

After he commenced his career with a solid freshman cross campaign, Logan set the freshman world on fire, spinning a 4:25 on his season closer. In the 2022 track season, that 4:25 was the best mark of any freshman Michigander in the 1600m, and was just one step toward a successful sophomore year. A part of his sophomore fall were many high placings, top-10’s at Michigan Catholic, Gabriel Richard, Wayne County, Regionals, and at the end of all that, an All-State. Track saw a new event and further realization of his potential, his 1:56 ranking 3rd amongst all Michigan athletes from the 10th grade and below. With many upperclassmen moving on to run at the next level, top finishes and high rankings will become championships, and Logan has 100% laid his foundation for those to come.
