An Early Look: Region 20

jakeflynn

(Jake Flynn still holds the school record at Benzie, I’m wouldn’t be shocked if he holds the course record as well)

GIRLS

Reg20gt

Reg20gi

Hart isn’t as strong as last year, but they should walk here, potentially sweeping the top 5.  Benzie Central is undoubtedly a top 10 team, but you wouldn’t know it by the score.  Two ranked teams in the battle for 3rd, practically neighbors even, unfortunately only one can make it.  Individually, this is about as tough as you’ll get for Division 3.  This might be even stronger than the next region I’ll be looking at (in Division 1).

Hart

  • Rank: 1

Defending state champs that could’ve made an argument for being the best team last year.  They probably can’t make that case this year, but again have excellent depth.

  • Highest Rated: Savannah Ackley

Savannah started out with a bang, 18:09 at Pete Moss, then suffered at Spartan.  Recovered to consistently run 18’s for the rest of the year.  Finished 7th at State Finals.  Then went 11:10 and finished 6th (11:25) at the track Finals.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Brenna Aerts

Brenna has spent three years in the program.  She barely broke 20 as a freshman and has dropped into the low 19’s the past two seasons.  Her 8th place here last year has been her best finish and she was All-State last year as well.

  • Darkhorse: Audrianna Enns

Hard to find a darkhorse with this team, though Audrianna has a chance for improvement.  She’s always had some speed, running 2:20 as an 8th grader, but showed increased strength in dropping her 1600m to 5:20.  Expect to see multiple sub-19 performances this season.

Benzie Central

  • Rank: 6

As I said, Benzie is undoubtedly a top 10 team.  They were 8th at MIS last year and return many of those same girls.  My guess is competing against a team like Hart pulls them along and benefits them for big races later in the season.

  • Highest Rated: Cierra Guay

Cierra has shown some nice gradual progression throughout her years.  She’s dropped more than 30 seconds each year, and 2018 was the first time she placed top 15 at regionals.  In track, she saw some major leaps, especially in the 1600m, getting down to 5:30

  • Career achievement/improvement: Paige Johnston

Another girl that’s done about every event in track.  The only events missing from her profile are the disc and 300h.  She’s spent every year under 20 and every year in the top 15 here.

  • Darkhorse: Haley VanWagoner

Haley really sped up as 2018’s season went on.  Finished in over 24 minutes at Pete Moss, but ended the year in the 20’s.  Her track times indicate someone capable of running in the low 20’s, perhaps faster.

McBain

  • Rank: 15

McBain was about on the same level as Benzie last year, but loses their top two runners.  The team finished 5th at Northern Michigan, 3rd at Regionals, and 9th at State Finals.  They add some talented freshman to mitigate those losses.

  • Highest Rated: Maggie O’Malley

As far as I know, the last of the O’Malley clan.  Maggie was just barely over 20 minutes last year, finishing 16th here.  She made a nice jump in the 16 during track, erasing 15 seconds down to 5:36.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Megan Taylor

Megan has been a model of consistency.  Her best times the last three years have been 21:23, 21:21, 21:22.  Someone like Megan is essential for every team, comes on strong at the end of every season, is dependable, and can likely place before others 5th runners.

  • Darkhorse: Regan Hill

Regan has consistently been in the 13’s for McBain’s middle school team.  In track, she snagged two major PRs, running 6:03 and 13:06.

Others to Watch

  • Dreea Atchison, Morley Stanwood

Dreea ran a HUGE personal best to finish 11th here last year.  19:24 when her best time during the season was a 20:03.

  • Paige Swiriduk, Manton

Paige has been near or at the front of many northern Michigan invitationals for years now.  She’s been first at Cecil Burch two years running, picked up a win at Late Season Warrior in 2017.  Three time qualifier, two time All-Stater.

  • Abbigail Kiaunis, Reed City

As with Atchison, ran out of her mind to qualify last year.  19:14 while her season best had been a minute higher.  Showed some major potential with her 1600 time, she has the highest chance of breaking into Hart’s sweep.

BOYS

Reg20bt

Reg20bi

The boys side is concentrated into two battles.  Hart vs. Benzie for the champ and Pine River, Manistee, McBain for third place.  As always, it’ll come down to everyone on the team, but especially those in the middle of the pack.

Hart

  • Rank: 6

Don’t overlook Hart’s boys squad.  They didn’t have any Ackleys walking through those doors (but now they do) and were still able to finish top-10 the past two years.

  • Highest rated: Alex Enns

A bit of assuming here, but Alex’s track season was cut short.  My guess would be injury, but it was early enough that he’ll hopefully get in some summer training.  We’ve seen what he can do when healthy, 11th at State last year and multiple times in the 16’s.  Defending regional champ.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Hunter Tubbs

Three years in the Hart program, three years of running at State Finals.  Another top-100 finish last year for Hunter and the second straight year under 17.

  • Darkhorse: Clayton Ackley

I think we’ve learned to expect great things from this family.  Clayton ran 11:20 on the XC course last fall, 5:09/11:18 in track.

Benzie Central

  • Rank: 5

Benzie has a little better overall rating, but a little less depth than Hart.  They’re a senior-laden team, that group finished 15th last year, but they have what might be the best addition in the country.  That addition has the potential begin a new regional championship streak at Benzie, they had previously won 6 straight, from 2011 to 2016.

  • Highest rated: Hunter Jones

As an 8th grader, ran 2:09/4:32/9:34.  Best 3200m time of any middle schooler in the country last year.  Hard to find middle school national records, looked at the USATF JO records for 13/14 year olds.  The best 3000 run there was a 9:08, Jones’s pace would put him at 8:58.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Wesley VanPoortfliet

Wesley dropped 1:30 from his freshman to sophomore year.  That sophomore year saw him come on strong at the end of October, 17:43 at Manistee National and 17:20 here.

  • Darkhorse: Connor Mclaren

Connor has always been solid at the 4/8, it’s translated to XC in some races, but not all.  He made another jump this year, dropping down to 2:03.  If he brings more consistency to the table, Benzie has a real shot of winning here.

Leroy Pine River

  • Rank: N/R

Pine River isn’t a team you’d traditionally count on to be here.  But they’re young, have a nice little pack, and a few of their athletes had nice track seasons.

  • Highest rated: Jayce Methner

Jayce ran 17:49 last year and finished 42nd here.  In track, he was able to run 10:40 for the second straight year.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Kaden Darrow

Kaden made quite a leap from his 9th to 10th grade year, dropping down from the 22’s to the 19’s.  He continued that progression last year and was able to run 5:09 in track.

  • Darkhorse: Phil Rigling

Another case of my assumptions.  Phil’s track season ended shortly after he ran a 2:17 in late March.  Once again, if he’s healthy enough to partake in summer training, watch out, as a freshman he was able to run in the 18’s at the end of the year.

Others to Watch

  • Connor Murphy, McBain

In Connor’s first year of XC, he managed to run 16:25 and finish 6th here.  He flashed some 1600m ability, hitting multiple 4:4x performances throughout the season.

  • Ransom Hoeflinger, Manistee

Ransom dropped nearly a minute from his freshman year PR.  Perhaps the most impressive of that year to year improvement was a 21:06 at 2017’s Pete Moss to a 17:28 last September.

  • Aiden McLaughlin, Morley-Stanwood

The question is, how much does an 800 translate?  Aiden has been decent at XC, not spectacular, but running 1:55.1 is spectacular.  That 800 netted him a 1st place finish at State Finals and definitely makes one think he can spend some time in the 15s in a few months.

Regional Previews

An Early Look: Region 17

Algonac_Course_Map

GIRLS

Reg17gt

Reg17gi

Warren Regina

  • Rank: N/R

Very young team that benefitted from the addition of 5 freshmen last year.  Regional champ last year in an extremely tight team race.  Ended up 5th in Macomb County as well, ahead of much larger schools.

  • Highest Rated: Grace Zdankiewicz

Grace was able to set a PR early in what would be a great freshman season.  18:55 at Muskrat Classic, always a fast course.  She slowed down a little in the middle of the season, but rebounded to finish 3rd at regionals.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Sabrina Kroll

Sabrina came up with a huge regional race last year, running 22:25, a 12 second PR at the time.

  • Darkhorse: Grace Audisho

Tough call between Grace and Jessica Jarski, both equally deserving of mention.  Grace posted a faster 3200m time (12:32).  That time came after a period of steady improvement and was good enough for 8th at Macomb County.

Imlay City

  • Rank: N/R

Imlay City was a tough 4th here last year.  Their depth, especially in spots 4-7, really help them here.  Personally, I feel the numbers may have them underrated.  Their track season also really improved their projections, many girls broke 6 in the 1600m.  Always beneficial to have a senior-laden team in the biggest race of the year.

  • Highest Rated: Mary Lengemann

Came on strong as the season went on, running her fastest times late.  Her PR of 19:50 comes from regionals, where she finished 8th.  Thumb Area also went well, a 4th place finish.  Improvement continued into track, where she popped a 5:23.

  • Career achievement/improvement: McKinzie Winget

McKinzie is a senior who, the past two years, has reduced time as the season has drawn to an end.  In 2018, that drop was much more severe, as she was able to PR here in 20:51.  Also, check out that track profile, 60.7 in the 400.

  • Darkhorse: Elizabeth Sliman

Ran a 5:55 in track, but was over 23:00 in XC.  Must have been some serious winter training!

Macomb Lutheran North

  • Rank: N/R

Lutheran North’s 5th-7th girls can be the deciding factor here.  Wood and Starkey are known quantities and they have a few freshmen who can be decent additions.  They were 7th here last year, so potentially a minor upset.

  • Highest Rated: Amanda Wood

Amanda spent much time in the upper places of her races.  2nd at Regionals, Macomb County, Catholic League, and Hansons, then 1st at Autumn Classic.  She’s been in the 19’s all three years.  This spring, she showed some speed, running 2:19 in the 800.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Maya Hielscher

Maya is one of those aforementioned 5th-7th girls that could be integral to Lutheran North’s success.  Such a gradual progression last year, running 27+ minutes their time trial, into the 22’s by the end of September, finally running a 22:14 (PR) here.

  • Darkhorse: Madeleine Barge

This is where it’s truly a guessing game on my part.  Brief research shows that most runners from Rochester St. John go to Lutheran North, if she does, this is another factor that puts them ahead of Cros-Lex.  Three results, two in the 13’s, a 12:50 at Holly.  If she goes to Lutheran Northwest, then that’s a big help for them.  If she goes public, the same thing.

Others to Watch

  • Erin Manns, Croswell-Lexington

Erin improved on a solid freshman track season, dropping from 5:51 to 5:41, then showed the ability to handle longer distances, running 12:15.

  • Alaina Carroll, Armada

Alaina spent the entirety of her 11th grade year in the 20’s, then popped a 19:27 here, good for 4th place.

  • Lily Connelly, Croswell-Lexington

I wouldn’t normally mention two girls from one school, but Lily’s track season deserves recognition.  8th in the 800 at States in a 2 second personal best!

BOYS

Reg17bt

Reg17bi

BOYS

Yale

  • Rank: 14

Yale is about as experienced a team you’ll find.  They’re the defending champs here, were 2nd in Thumb Area, and finished 20th at States last year.  They’re led by an outstanding top 2, but will need some depth to step up in order to move up at States this year.  They’re set up for success in the future, check out the numbers of their middle school team.  Oh, forgot to mention their 4×8 was 3rd and 4×4 1st just a few weeks ago.

  • Highest Rated: Matthew McClelland

Pretty good initial two years for this guy.  He’s thrown down some solid times, 16:20 at regionals last year.  Accolades present too, 3rd at Thumb Area, 7th at Holly, BWAC champion, and took part in that winning 4×4 squad.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Hunter Richards

Hunter can be right there with McClelland.  The accomplishments are there as well, 2nd at Thumb Area, 4th here last year, just a subpar State race lowers his projection.  But the great times can happen, as his 4:34 in track indicates.

  • Darkhorse: Nolan Kudera

When your brother runs 48.x and you run a 2:00 800 as a sophomore, you’ve got my eye for potential.  Is the pure, unadulterated speed there?  Maybe not, but the 2 flat shows some strength.

St. Clair

  • Rank: 21

St. Clair is another team that’s experienced, but not as much as Yale.  3 of their top 7 last year were freshman, and as you know, that can lead to major jumps.

  • Highest Rated: Jack Pennewell

Jack suffered a stress fracture at the end of 2018’s track season, hindering his summer training and his XC season.  Rebounded quite nicely in track, running 4:26/9:45.  As I told St. Clair’s coach, he’s probably underrated by the numbers, but has the potential to flirt with the 16-min. barrier.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Raymond Hill

As what may be St. Clair’s only senior in the top 7, I’m placing him here.  He was 16th here last year, but thankfully was able to run at MIS.  From his freshman to junior year, he’s run more than 2 minutes faster.

  • Darkhorse: Lucas Danko

Out of all the underclassmen, he’s likely the most capable of surprising this fall.  He’s had a few breakout races but not great consistency.  17:42 at Muskrat Classic and 17:22 at MAC Championship.  In track, his 10:38 (multiple sub-10:50 efforts too) shows he can be a steady figure in the 17’s this year.

Armada

  • Rank: 20

Armada is carried by a very quick top three, beyond that remains to be seen.  They return 4 of their top 7 from a team that finished 2nd here last year and 17th at States.

  • Highest Rated: Alec Albrecht

Alec could be placed in the darkhorse category as well.  In just his first season of XC, he was able to run mid-16’s, finish 6th here, and sneak into the top-50 at States.

  • Career achievement/improvement: Noah Verlinde

A certain Armada alum who’s running at Oklahoma next year has said Verlinde is putting in some serious training this summer.  Coming off a track season where he broke 10 indoors, that could mean time in the low 16’s or maybe high 15’s.

  • Darkhorse: Connor Mackenzie

Connor dropped 6 seconds from his already excellent freshman 800 time (2:06 to 2:00).  As with Albrecht, last year was his first running XC.  His rating is lower because of some slower times to start the year, he’s another one that you could see in the low 16’s.

Others to Watch

  • Collin Holzberger, Croswell-Lexington

Keeping in line with my fascination with XC stars doing field events, Collin finished 8th at States in the pole vault.  Must be nice to have that combination of fast twitch fibers, strength, and ability to run sub-17.

  • Cheikh Ndiaye, Hazel Park?

Cheikh shows a few track results from Berkley.  Not often you see Hazel Park distance runners.  I remember they had a state champ back in the 90’s.  I’m hoping he runs for Hazel Park.

  • Bryson DenUyl, Marysville

I think I might make it out to this region to see the battle between Bryson and McClelland.  Bryson had the better of it in cross, being the defending champ here and notching that spot on the stage at MIS.

GLR Leg Rankings

GLR Day 3 Leg Rankings: 17-13

I figured it was pretty dumb to do this one leg at a time.  As if this concept wasn’t dumb enough to begin with.  So here’s the next 5.

17.

c13

Matt: #15
Josh: #15

I haven’t run this leg as a part of the official GLR, but I did stay in the area one year and of course, got my GLR fix by running it.  There’s some hills here, especially on Richardson Rd.  Not as bad as C-14 though.  There’s also a HUGE pothole on Heniser coming out of the exchange where I’ve seen multiple cars bottom out.  Many runners miss the turn onto Tucker, but by this point, runners are well-seasoned and don’t get turned around for long.

T15

c16

Matt: #9
Josh: #18

There are some reasons Josh has it so low.  At this point in the day, you’re running by yourself.  It’s partially out in the open, the parts not in the open are hilly and on a tiny, rutty road.  This was once half of a leg, the other half being C-17.  Combined, they made up one of my better runs ever.  Not even just GLR, not even just races, maybe the best I’ve ever felt on a run.  You’ll see why later.

c8

Matt: #14
Josh: #13

Did not realize the Boardman River extends this far south.  I seem to remember this leg being extremely sandy.

14.

c9

Matt: #13
Josh: #12

I have fond memories of this leg, not because of the actual leg itself.  The directions purport this to be confusing, it’s not.  Some runners stop at the intersection that formerly had a tree in the middle (who knew roundabouts existed this far north?), but most do the right thing and keep running.  The exchange is in a nice, peaceful, tree-lined area.

That nice tree-lined area is where I was stranded by my team way back in 2012.  That incident resulted in much yelling, crying, and almost a severed friendship.  None of that included me, of course.  I jumped in a car with 4 girls and drank PBR with them on the way to find my team.

13.

c15

Matt: #17
Josh: #6

This is the first instance where we truly diverge.  For those of you into that sort of thing, I found a video of someone driving the leg:

Josh: “I ranked Last Hill high because I’ve done it and conquered it and also have been conquered by it.  I cried for like 30 seconds after it one year because I was emotionally and physically spent.  I couldn’t even stop it.  It was weird.”

See, team captain of mine, you’re not the only one crying after GLR legs.
