Top Runners

Thought I’d give a review of some of the top returners in each region. Returners means no incoming freshman (you’ll get your days in the sun). If you’re on a top team or in the 50 Tickets and you’re projected highly here, you hit the jackpot! Yes, I’m writing a bit less than previous years, but I think I’ve learned my lesson in that I need to conserve energy and brainpower for all divisions and regions. Typically by August, I’m rushing to get these done. This time around, hopefully all regions get the same amount of coverage.

Emmry Ross, Onsted

Some wondered how a bunch of mid-2:20’s during her freshman year of track would translate to cross country. Oh, they translated into a relentlessly aggressive racer. Undefeated until her 3^rd place at State, Emmry picked up championships at Lenawee County, LCAA, and Region 23.

Madison Osterberg, Jackson Lumen Christi

For all the time I spend looking at times and numbers, I guess I didn’t realize how fast Madison was during her junior regular season. Twice under 18:10, at Jackson then again at Portage, before finally breaking through with a 17:54 at MITCA.

Ava Hathaway, Bronson

Numerous accomplishments during her initial year racing for the Vikings. Wins at all three Big 8 Jamborees to go along with a 14^th place finish down the road at MIS.

Macy Fazekas, Jackson Lumen Christi

Stepped up at the start of the year as LC’s #2 girl and held down that role for the entire season. Along the way, half her races were of the 19-min. variety.

Chloe Stallhood, Hillsdale

Two consecutive years that she’s been sub-20 by years’ end. Her 2022 version contained a 4^th place finish her and top-40 placing at State.

Isaiah Dinverno, Jackson Lumen Christi

Closed his sophomore fall with a ton of sub-17’s and a bunch of huge performances – including 3^rd here and an All-State.

Mitchell Hiatt, Onsted

Knocked off two whole minutes from his freshman year. And it wasn’t just one race – Mitch was sub-17 on 4 separate occasions.

Alex Czeiszperger, Hudson

Brings his best performances when the stakes are high. Top-40 finishes at MIS, with one of those being the All-State he achieved as a mere freshman.

Nolan Grant, Hillsdale

Before he had a track season that gave promise towards his senior year, he had a junior cross campaign that featured his first sub-17 ever and a top-5 regional finish.

Gannon Shore, Jackson Lumen Christi

Always pull some sort of magic towards the end of the year. As a sophomore, that was his first sub-17 at Turkeyville. Last year, a top-5 regional finish, moving up 17 spots from his sophomore year.

Top Returners

Connell Alford

Gonna do a bit of writing about Connell over these next few weeks, so I’ll try to spread it out. But first, let’s marvel at his 2022 season. Wins in all but one regular season race, 14^th at Nationals, and a State Title.

Leo Swager

Athleticnet profile goes wayyyyy back to 5^th grade, where Leo would’ve contributed on a few teams throughout the state. Needless to say, he’s improved quite a bit since then, closing his sophomore year with a string of 16-min. efforts.

Jackson Dell

Chelsea’s 4^th-6^th man through much of October and November and had a heckuva 800m spring, where he shot under 2:00 at Larry Steeb.

Beckett Boos

Gained valuable experience stepping on the line in Brooklyn then showed off his speed endurance during track, a 2:06 800m ranking 7^th amongst D2 freshmen.

Linus Helzerman

A stark difference between his 19:58 opener and the near miss of sub-18 at the SEC Championship.

Karl Swager

You gotta take your lumps running those 18:0x’s before getting into the 17’s. Karl had a number of low-18 performances which will give way to much quicker times very shortly.

Mo Cugliari

Tremendous improvement from sophomore to junior years, knocking more than a minute off his previous best.

Potential Newcomers

Wyeth Angus

All but one 3200/2-mile race was of the sub-12 variety. Wyeth, like a few others that I’ve written about, was generous enough to grace us with a 5k effort, an 18:57 at MITCA. When he trains for those 3.107 miles, he’ll likely be much faster.

Owen Thorburn

Chelsea may set a record for the number of coach’s kids on one squad. Owen was right there with Wyeth, hitting top-10’s in the SEC along with a slew of sub-12’s.

Top Returners

Clara Fletcher

Just gets better each and every year. Was a commendable mid-20 girl as a freshman that’s turned into a regional champ, 2x All-Stater, and capped her junior fall with an 18:24.

Abby Young

Had gone 2 season and over 20 races before getting under 20:00. Then after Bath, when Abby got there for the first time, she was in the 19’s on all but one occasion. 24^th at Division 2 State in her second appearance, moving up 177 spots since her freshman year.

Miriam Kloha

I like comparing how an athlete fares from jamboree to jamboree, being that it’s the same competition for the most part. In the CAAC Red, Miriam placed 8^th, then 7^th, then 6^th. Slow progress throughout the year.

Sylvia Thomas

Another example of many in a program known for its development. Has improved from a 23-24 min. girl to one that closed the ’22 season with seven consecutive sub-21’s.

Potential Newcomers

Ava Schafer

One of the better incoming freshmen girls in the state. As an 8^th grader, nearly every race was in the 11’s, with major wins at Jr. Greater Lansing and Zone 5.
