Best Throws Crews: Boys Week Six

I actually had these done last night, but wanted to give the girls some of their own time and love.

WEEK ONE RANKINGS

WEEK FOUR RANKINGS

These are compiled using marks tossed onto athleticnet by Tuesday night.

Your Division 1 model of consistency and defending Shot Put champion is back. In 2022, Andrew Berryhill rode a string of four straight 56’+ efforts en route to a state title. For 2023, he’s expanded his range, reaching 60’ already.

After taking two losses in their opening dual against Alma, Frankenmuth’s Dalton DeBeau is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t occur again. All but one of his tosses have been better than those marks, and his 180’7 in the disc is the furthest in the state in 2023. Two important dates: May 10th is the rematch against Alma in the TVC8 Championship, June 3rd is where he’ll (hopefully) defend his State Title.

In order to capture a state crown, a team must have outstanding individuals and a few surprises. For Pewamo-Westphalia, that outstanding individual is Gavin Nurenburg, who has picked up 24 points on his own in the last two D3 finals. Again, he finds himself in the mix, ranking 3rd in D3 in both throwing events. But then you add in a darkhorse, Dalton Brown, who catapulted 50’+ shot put at Kent City Elite, finishing 5th among the division’s best. On that First Saturday in June, if the two can combine for 15-20 points, that will go a long way toward the Pirates title bid.

Last year in the discus, Petersburg-Summerfield’s Dakota Kohn just kept adding distance, meet after meet. First it was a 118’ in early May, then a 132’ at Erie Mason, then ending in a 143’er at D4 State. Thus far this year in his undefeated campaign, he’s already passed 140’ twice. Consider that his best throw as of this time last year was under 120’ and think toward the future. He’s a real candidate to win it all.

His first year of track as a senior and he’s already figuring things out quickly. Lyle Horn burst onto the scene with a 36’11 shot put at Harbor Springs. In just over two weeks since then, he’s added more than 4 feet. Currently, he’s ranked 2nd in Division 2 and 6th in the entire Upper Peninsula, but I see no reason he can’t move up even further.
