We’re actually a bit past halfway, but in my mind, Portage is the end of the regular season. Past this upcoming weekend, the schedule will be dominated by championships – county, league, area, regional, and state. In anticipation of that, why not some regional projections?
These projections take on the same format as the rankings, just at the regional level now. Real quick:
Ratings are generated via:
- The top 67% (rounding to the nearest whole number) performances of a runner
- Runners with three or less rated races have all races counted
- Those are then weighed on recency, meet size, and competitiveness of the meet
Those ratings are then compiled and scored as a hypothetical meet. Every runner that’s run a rated race from September 1st on is included.
Yes, athletic.net has simulations. These are different than athletic.net because:
- They account for course conditions and distance
- If you ran a shorter course, you’re likely to be overrated on there
- If you ran only hilly, rough courses, you’re likely to be underrated on there
- They take your best performance, I capture more of the resume
Is one better than the other? The only year (2021) I compared my predictions vs. athletic.net, I correctly predicted 188 of the 216 team qualifiers, a.net simulated 184. 2% difference, but I’ll take it. Last year, I had 194 of those 216 top-3 regional teams, the previous year, 197 of 216. I like my track record. I ain’t no a.net hater either, as I bet I spend more time on there than any human in the US.
Anyhow, as I’ve said on my division rankings, these are for fun. I’m positive in my writings toward everyone, you can be cool toward me. Enjoy.
Any Surprises?
Mayville
Who have made the move from a 7th place projection to 3rd. They’ve kept largely the same lineup as thought in the summer (additions always a large reason for improvement in the D4 realm), their move up is largely thanks to Gabe Grymonprez. Gabe’s gone from a guy that ended his 10th grade year in the 23’s to a junior that’s already hit the mid-20’s.
Tri-Unity Christian
They’re not the deepest squad of all-time. Though they sure are significant at the spots they do have. Of course, title contender Lincoln Laansma is one of the contributors. Another one is sophomore Caden Amerine, who has dropped from the 21’s to the 18’s over the past year. They’re even finding 8th graders to throw in the mix, Isaac Koros running into the 18’s on a few occasions over the past several weeks.
Fairview
Where we can thank the wholesale change of Jaxx Weaver. Of Jaxx’s six 5k’s during the ’25 season, he broke 24:00 in one of ‘em. A year has passed and he’s been sub-20 on four occasions, even into the 18’s during his last big race at Heritage. Of course, the Eagles also have the reliable Carter Toensfeldt, who has been in the top-12 in the regional setting each of the past two seasons.

Battles to Watch
Region 28
Where Ellsworth and East Jordan occupy the 3rd and 4th spots, separated by 6 points. Despite the close proximity, the two teams have matched up only once this year, Ellsworth winning at the Charlevoix Classic by a convincing 21-34 score. East Jordan has had significant improvement since that mid-September day, with junior Ethan Sutton dropping 3 min. from his mark there, which can surely cut into that deficit.
Region 30
One single point separating Carson City-Crystal and Michigan Lutheran Seminary in the projections. CC-C goes about their strength by their top-three running close by, impacting the score with each pass. At Shepherd, Zayden Buskirk, Payton Crawfis, and Braylon Satterlee were able to cross the line within ~20 sec. of one another as the Eagles finished 3 places ahead of MLS. The Cardinals however were missing Logan Whitmer, who has been a varsity scorer throughout the entire season.
Region 31
Which has turned into a wild one, with 6 teams ranked in the top-21. Of those six teams, you can surely eliminate Holland Calvary Christian and their impending 1st spot. I think we can safely say that one is etched in stone. Five ranked teams in the hunt for two qualifying slots. This wasn’t really thought to be the case, but Tri-Unity Christian, Holton, and especially Martin have stepped up. In this concentrated area of elite runners, a low-stick such as Laansma may have a huge impact, with T-UC projected in the third spot. As he has the capability of placing before the Calvary pack, that’s one less scorer impacted by their greatness.

Genesee Christian
Coming from a few unexpected spots. First, the transfer of Faith Smith from Davison. Smith was on the cusp of the 20’s during her freshman season, she’s more than found her way into that area as a sophomore. Then, a gaggle of 8th graders, 2 of whom featured in the Soldier lineup as they placed 3rd in the D5 race at Holly.
Decatur
Summer figures had the Raiders with four girls total, their roster has 10 runners right now. That in itself is some impressive recruiting. They still have their top girl, Cayla Buss, who just broke into the 21’s for the second straight year. And they found an impactful addition in Amaya Majewski, who has dropped over 3 min. from the start of the season.

Battles to Watch
Region 29
Always a tough one to advance from, 2026 is doing its part to live up to prior tradition. Two top-10 teams in Onekama and Grand Traverse Academy are probably safe. But Bear Lake has been performing serious work in their quest to move onto November racing. Evidence has come from their WMD Jamborees where Melodie Hulinek and Tessa Rutherford have gone 1-2 twice in a row. Of course all that considered, a Buckley team stands in their way. The two squads squared off at Buckley’s home invite a month back, coming in a tie that was decided by Bear Lake’s 6th girl. Since that matchup a month back, all five Buckley Bears have hit a SB. Great arguments for each to move on!
