STEPPIN’ UP ON REGIONAL DAY

The projected qualifiers were all projected qualifiers, but don’t for one second think there was not intrigue. Ithaca played a major role in that intrigue, springing an upset win in the girls race, and holding on by the skin of their 6^th runner in the boys edition. Weston LePard was that critical sixth guy, he’s been a steady high-18 guy over the past month, which was just what Ithaca needed in that spot. The projections pinged the Yellowjacket girls with a 5% chance of winning. A doable, yet tough task. Amelia Dawe made that mission a little easier, running in the 20’s for just the second time in her career. P-W actually placed in the range of where they were expected, it’s just that the Ithaca girls collectively had good days. When five girls can combine for something bigger, you get regional titles.

A few individuals also stood out in their advancement to MIS:

Ali Hunt, New Lothrop – spent the majority of the season >23 min. before blasting into the 21’s at the MMAC Championship. Hunt’s been there ever since, including her 21:24 here that earned her a spot on the line at MIS, her first State Finals appearance ever.

Krue Short, Belding – the Black Knight freshman showed amazing progression from Pete Moss to Bluejay, erasing more than a minute from his opener to run 17:27 on the Shepherd course. But in the weeks following, Short never matched that effort, until regional day where he popped a 17:29.
