The Rundown

I really loved this MLive article that delved into Megan’s evolution as a runner, check that, a racer. Looking back to her sophomore year, there was a definite uptick in her times and ability to hang with the best in the state. She had reduced her 3200m time from 11:46 to 11:15, not only winning her region again, but putting herself in the mix at the State Finals. The All-State may not have happened, but sometimes I feel those are the best results. Narrowly missing out on an honor, but knowing you improved. Runners seem to always respond to that sort of motivation, Megan being another prime example. Her junior hopes for stepping on podiums came true in many fashions, both individually and with her teammates. With everyone back from their State Title squad, the Otsego program is on good footing with Megan (and her girls) leading the way.

Top Runners

Thought I’d give a review of some of the top returners in each region. Returners means no incoming freshman (you’ll get your days in the sun). If you’re on a top team or in the 50 Tickets and you’re projected highly here, you hit the jackpot! Yes, I’m writing a bit less than previous years, but I think I’ve learned my lesson in that I need to conserve energy and brainpower for all divisions and regions. Typically by August, I’m rushing to get these done. This time around, hopefully all regions get the same amount of coverage.

Katie Berkshire, Gaylord

First high school season closed with nine consecutive sub-20’s and a 3^rd place finish here.

CamBrie Corey, Petoskey

Running two tougher courses late (here and MIS) may have not led to an accurate display of her fitness. Still, she ran low-19’s at both, placing 2^nd here and nabbing her first All-State. But then time-wise, the real shoe dropped with an 18:25 at Shepherd.

Nora O’Leary, Petoskey

Greatly excelled at the 3200m during track, finding her way into the 11’s for the first season ever, then placing 16^th in Division 2.

Brooklynn Brown, Cadillac

So dang consistent in the 1600m this spring. During May, almost all of her efforts were +/- a few seconds from 5:20. That was enough to place 2^nd in Region 11 and qualify for State, where she placed 18^th.

Sean Pettis, Fremont

You could tell his large leap during track was in the cards, as he moved from a mid-17 runner to one that was able to run 16:30 on this tough course and 16:19 on a MIS track that’s getting more difficult each year.

Gregory Janesak, Sparta

Competing for his Spartans, Gregory added to his trophy collection in track, gaining a OK Silver 1600m crown to go with his 3200m from last year.

Nolan Nixon, Cadillac

On top of winning last fall’s regional, Nolan moved up from 13^th to 4^th in the BNC, 51^st to 13^th at State, and ran exactly a minute faster at the MITCA Meet of Champions.

Caleb Palmreuter, Gladwin

Ran a ton of events for Gladwin (and for good reason – they made MITCA Team State, placing 7^th), though usually was fresh for the 1600m. When you see multiple 4:23’s and a 9^th place in Division 2, you know he’s the owner of some solid fitness.

Owen Metzger, Sparta

Came on strong at the end of the fall, leading into a stellar track season where his 1600 and 3200m ranked in the top-5 amongst ALL the state’s freshmen boys.

Shane Izzard, Petoskey

Leading into his magnificent track season was a cross country campaign featuring his 2^nd straight top-10 over here in Region 10.

Top Returners

Seth Norder

Gives Grand Haven the luxury of only needing to score four. Firsts at many of the past two seasons meets, with back-to-back Regional and OK Red titles.

Ben Eisnor

A quick glance at 2021 and 2022 might only show 16 sec. of improvement. But dig deeper and you find a kid that moved up 15 spots in Region 1 and 68 spots at the State Finals.

Aron Gal

Candidate for a breakout fall. His 4:34 in the 1600m ranked 7^th amongst all Division 1 freshmen. At this point, a very similar resume to another Buccaneer listed above.

Roman Smith

Hard to fathom that Roman was once a kid hovering around the 20 min. mark. Experienced a few sub-17 endeavors toward the end of cross and the progress didn’t stop. His 4:33 in the 1600m at Distance Night was a lifetime best and 20+ seconds faster than his sophomore year.

Carson Berko

His freshman profile is very similar to Owen and Liam below, and if they can match his sophomore year, watch out. Sub-17 in six of his final seven races.

Owen Cross

Ran much better at the close of his freshman year, even getting into the 17’s at the OK Red Championship.

Liam Schamper

I believe track gives a greater clue into what he’s capable. Had a great double at Distance Night, ripping off a 2:09/4:58.

Potential Newcomers

Luka Hammond

The only Michigan middle schooler to get under 10:00 last year. Also ran a 16:50 at Allendale’s post-regional race, so you know he’s ready for the 5k distance.
