It’s baaack. A summertime tradition has returned, the 50 Tickets to Brooklyn. These lists celebrate the top 50 returners – based on a concoction of the ’25 XC season, projected improvements, the ’26 Track season, and a tiny bit of my own input.

Her Championship Season

Was fully engrossed in all the Lansing Catholic success. From Portage on, the Cougars rattled off victory after victory (with one exception, a runner-up finish at Greater Lansing). Within all those hoisted trophies was Josie, continually running sub-19, race after race. Her October began with a runner-up finish in the D3 race at Portage, where she matched her personal best from P-W. Eleven days later came her fastest time of the year, an 18:34 in the final CAAC White Jamboree. Her second place regional performance from ’24 was matched and her State Finals, greatly surpassed, as she came home with in the 6th spot, greatly aiding Lansing Catholic in their title defense.

Her Championship Season

Was just more of the same. I mean that as a compliment! Throughout her three seasons on the cross course, Libby has racked up accolades at every championship level. In her league, the SAC? Nine jamborees, nine wins. Portage, the unofficial West Michigan championship? The lowest she’s finished is 5th. Up the road in Allendale for Region 31? Back-to-back victories. And representing tiny Gobles at the state level? Gradually moving up in D4, from 7th as a freshman to 3rd as a sophomore to 2nd as a junior.

Her Championship Season

Was a struggle for a time, then ended on a high note. Following a sophomore year where she won most of her TVC races and claimed victory in Region 15, Kaczor failed to win any league races and placed a disappointing 5th in the region. That was all redeemed on November 1st. It wasn’t done easily, however, as Clara had faded to 28th at the two-mile mark, potentially falling back off the podium. However, past experience of success at MIS and a bit of grit helped propel Kaczor in the final stretch, as she moved up 15 spots to place 13th.

Her Championship Season

In the fall, affirmed what we largely knew before her freshman year – that the talent was there. In the spring, showed us what we may not have known – there’s some resilience, too. Grace’s October and November featured a girl that handled each stage, racing to high places in the tough OK Red and Region 1. The State Finals may be the grandest setting, bleachers towering over the competitors in the finishing stretch, but that didn’t sway Snyder on her path to a sub-18. Track didn’t go so swimmingly, as Grace didn’t get to start racing in earnest until May. But with only a few races under her belt, she pulled out a 3200m qualifier on regional day, then a few weeks later, smoked through the 11 min. barrier, placing 11th in the freshman field at New Balance.

Her Championship Season

Featured yet another race where McInerney threw down an unforeseen performance. At the tail end of her sophomore fall, Ella ripped a 18:31 at State, nearly matching her then PR, a far cry from the 19/20 min. efforts that crowded her early season meets. She was consistently a mid-low 19 min. figure during last fall’s campaign, then once again turned it up into the mid-18’s at season’s close, notching her second consecutive podium performance at State.

Her Championship Season

Featured many of the better races of Mia’s career. One was for sure her PR set at the 2nd RCA Jamboree, a 17:52 beauty. Another was her runner-up finish at the Allendale Region, her best placing at the regional level. Regrettably, her State Finals performance wasn’t one of the better races. But with subpar efforts come the chance for redemption, which May definitely accomplished in this past May. She slipped under 11:00 for the 3200m, then four weeks later, notched her second consecutive All-State in the event.

Her Championship Season

Was spent reaching a level she hadn’t previously found. Evidence that it could happen came a few times in September – namely at Spartan and Bluejay. Each meet had its own adversity, either a tougher course or unseasonably warm weather. Each of those two instances had Alivia running much quicker than she had a year prior. Those two meets set the stage for her final three. In Shepherd, Ottinger ran her two fastest marks ever. At the Division 2 Finals, she nailed down her best finish, a 16th place.

Her Championship Season

Unfortunately ended at the DeWitt Regional. But man, Ella was sure on a course for a great close to the fall. An unseasonably warm day at Portage was dealt with easily, Lorenz dropping nearly 50 sec. from her time at that place in 2024. She dropped six places in the KLAA, moving from 9th as a freshman to 3rd as a sophomore, racing to a PR in the process. The foundation was there for a great close, which I’m sure will happen in the coming years, given the opportunity.

Her Championship Season

In track was spent righting past wrongs. Each of the past two Novembers, Mulder hasn’t had her greatest performance at MIS (which is fine, we don’t judge on ONE race). A few races into her spring campaign and her 3200m efforts (mid-11’s in late April) were markedly improved compared to any past performance. At the beginning of May, when the OK Black Championship came, so too did Mulder’s big breakthrough. Her 10:56 won the whole dang thing, a 30+ sec. PR in the process. That PR led to a qualifier at Region 2, then a 11:04 at Rockford that further validated her season.

Her Championship Season

In cross was spent running high-level race after high-level race. Faced with an important race, Isom delivered, running her fastest time on the MIS course and winning her conference. Track is where we especially Lane’s ability to come in the clutch. In the early part of the season, Isom had thrown down the fastest 800m time in D1, which of course put a mark on her back heading into the State Finals. Even with the added pressure, Isom didn’t waver, finding a way to victory in the final stages of the race. She wasn’t done just yet, as two weeks later, she was able to set a lifetime best – 2:07.86.

His Specialty

Ballard is in the same exact position as last year, so what’d I write?

From my eyes, mid-distance. At Romeo, Ballard was a revelation to me, winning the 3rd fastest section by a considerable 4 second margin. A few weeks later, he raced to a 3rd place finish in the UP’s Division 1. Better than that 3rd was a win in the 800m. For the entire season, Ballard never gave us a time north of 2-flat, spitting times as fast as 1:56.

A year has passed and it’s been much of the same for Lucas. He’s improved on his 400m best, adding more speed to his tank. He comes off a season where he matched his 800m/1600m bests. He vanquished any challengers to his 800m crown, then added the 1600m early in the day for good measure. And with many of these kids who may specialize a *little* more toward the track, he’s got the XC chops too, being an elite UP contender for the past three seasons.

His Specialty

Given his stark rise this spring, quite obviously, the mile. When racing over those extra 9.3 meters in the Brooks PR freshman race, Archer stepped his game up even more than the 1600m form he showed in Michigan. Whereas his 1600m best on home state soil was “only” 4:15.65, over in Seattle, it was 4:12.46. That mark ranks #2 in Michigan history amongst 9th graders, second to only Rockford’s Cole Johnson. Given Grand Haven’s recent success in developing Seth Norder, Luka Hammond, and Gabby Hentemann, the future is extremely enticing.

His Specialty

Championship season consistency. Heck, you could extend that to any big race in which Abraham competed. From October on, McHugh submitted his best material. Either it was sub-16 on the time sheet or a superb effort on a tough day (16:23 at Portage). His personal best came from those steady performances, as to did a Regional title, and his first All-State on the grass. When Abraham enters the ’26 championship season, expect him to make the most of his fitness.

His Specialty

He’s a track guy, for sure. Especially in the mid-distance. For two years now, Doll has been significantly sub-2 in the 800m. 1:56 as an 8th grader and 1:55 already this summer. It ain’t just one event for the rising Skyline sophomore, as he ranked #3 amongst all freshmen in the 1600m. Those efforts may have not panned out individually at the State Finals, but his speed was integral in the Eagles’ runner-up finish in the 4×8. I have no doubt that Hudson’s strength as a runner, even on the cross course, will benefit Skyline this fall.

His Specialty

Ooooh, another miler. Nick (and the others) wouldn’t be on this list if not for their cross country exploits. In Nick’s case, we know he’s a been solid mid-16 guy, with the occasional 15:xx burst. However, it’s his progress over four laps that gives wonder into what he’s capable. In the past year, he’s progressed from 4:29 to 4:11. That eye-popping 4:11 came from MITCA’s Champions of Champions, and just two weeks earlier, his personal best was 4:20. In the meantime, he grabbed 3rd at the D2 Finals. It’s not the only event where Parker saw tremendous improvement, as his 9:22 in the 3200m has impact here as well. The burgeoning talent is undeniable.

With changing courses, temperatures, terrain, championships or not, Austin Mercado delivers you a sub-16. That was even the case as a sophomore, his championship season consisting of many mid-16 efforts. Again, the case in track, despite racing infrequently, able to muster a 9:27 at regionals and qualify for State. Any circumstance, any season, expect Mercado to not let you down.

Reaching a whole new level when the races begin to matter. Peer at Betzold’s two seasons running for Garber and you’ll find a familiar theme. Even extending into mid-October, Seth races at one level. As a sophomore, this was in the mid to low 17’s. A junior, the mid-16’s. Then a whole new racer comes about at Regional, State, and MITCA. This resulted in three straight 16:1x efforts in 2025, then a sub-16 and All-State finish as a junior. Don’t trust the projections, trust that Seth will shock you in November.

His Specialty

Really ripping it on the track. You pick an event, relay or individual, and Liam will have had success in it. The 800m? Well, he popped off the Titan’s Division 1 5th place relay. Individually, in just three times toeing the line all season, dropped a 1:57. Extending up to the 3200m? He’s got the 19th fastest PR of any returner in Michigan. Liam’s prime event seems to be the 1600m, where he finished 14th in Division 1, then pushed through to a massive personal best (4:14) a week later at MITCA. Surely that momentum will carry over into cross.

Improving into unforeseen levels. Okay, perhaps unforeseen is a little rough, given his family history. But genetics doesn’t always tell the whole story and hand waves away his rapid improvement. This jump up has been seen on multiple levels. For one, freshman to sophomore year, as Sean closed the year 80 sec. faster (17:15 to 15:55). Throughout the season, as Thompson has typically dropped more than a minute from his openers. And on the track, where he’s dipped welllll into the 9’s for the 3200m, moving from 10:21 to 9:18 in one full year. What’s next? Given the current Caledonia momentum, the sky’s the limit.

His Specialty

Being able to bring it on a variety of courses. Something I’ve always felt about Pinckney runners is that they’re tough and resilient. Maybe it’s the tradition, maybe it’s the need for miles on the endless dirt roads, hills, and trails in the surrounding area. But it’s evident in Cole’s past. When the Pirates head to Holly, he’s spun some of his best material, winning in ’24 and dropping a 15:53 this past fall. Perhaps an even tougher course in Kenosha brought out a win in the Footlocker Fresh/Soph. race. Turn the tables to quicker venues and he can speed up, evidenced by his 15:36 at Gabriel Richard. Us Michiganders are blessed to endure many changing circumstances and Cole is well-equipped to handle anything that comes his way.

Her Breakout Race

We have to go waaaaay back, back toward the ’24 spring. Back when Chloe was coming off a freshman fall in which she was able to slip under 21:00 a few times, but not running close to the level she’s racing at today. Early that spring (and winter), the signs were noticeable that she had transformed. She was sub-6:00 during indoor and also threw down some solid halves and two-milers over the course of the season. But the area she exceled (and still excels) was over four laps. 5:xx after 5:xx was the pattern during that season and the penultimate race was the best, a 5:14 that placed her 4th in Region 2, what was then the 16th fastest freshman mark in Michigan. Since those days, it’s been game on for Purwin and her fellow Eagles.

Her Breakout Race

Seemingly the case every season, her State Finals. I could write about last season, where she ran her fastest time ever at MIS. Or the previous year, where she matched this past year’s place, finishing 8th. Or I could venture back to her freshman year. Throughout much of that ’23 fall, Lowman turned in a solid freshman campaign. Many races in the 19’s, an impactful feature in the WMC, a runner-up finish in Region 10. Nothing, however, could predict the 18:26 she dropped at MIS, at that point a 40+ second personal best. I’m somewhat certain that her subsequent greatness on the State Finals course has a relation to that day.

Her Breakout Race

When someone wins a State Title, I always look to the ladder steps it took to get there. Surely, being part of Lumen Christi’s ’23 squad has been an impact on Schroeder’s career. In terms of fitness and times, her close to her sophomore season showed the marks, ratings, and times that were possible. And even during her junior year, hidden breakthroughs were there. Thinking back to the Spartan Invite, which was not the fastest day for racing. Schroeder popped a 18:54, her fastest time on the slower Spartan course, continually lengthening her lead on the field en route to a win. That toughness was again shown in November when Same claimed Division 3 victory with a late, ferocious kick.

Her Breakout Race

As the saying goes, “if you can run fast at Holly, you can run fast anywhere!” This past fall, Becca ran very fast at Holly, a course known for its ups, downs, and many turns. The signifiers were there early, as she raced to her fastest opener at Lamplighter and dipped under 18:00 for the first time ever in the SEC opener. Though nothing compares to the 17:45 that was thrown down at Springfield Oaks. With regard to the running fast anywhere, that took some time, though it ultimately occurred. Because on the final days of the ’26 track season, Van Lent ran pretty dang fast, hitting the 3rd fastest 800m time in Michigan and anchoring the winning 4×8 for her Skyline Eagles.

Her Breakout Race

Came the moment she stepped on the track as a freshman. I must be a negligent track fan, ‘cause I didn’t see it coming. Collette (and her sister, Ella) didn’t run cross during her 9th grade fall, but in that spring, had all the markings of a great distance athlete. Her first outdoor 800m at the high school level came in late April, her 2:22 a mark that many would love to end their season with. When her two-lap season did end after one more race, her personal best was a 2:13. Clearly evident through two races that her talent was overflowing. And she’s clearly proven that over the past two years, winning state titles on her own and with her teammates, along with lowering her 800m best to 2:08.

Her Breakout Race

Even before all the 800m greatness, podium finishes, New Balance outbursts, and team titles, was Kayla’s freshman year on the cross course. Shellenbarger had come into 9th grade as a successful runner, winning the majority of her middle school races. She had some solid introductions to the 5k at the beginning of her ’24 season, slipping under 20:00 at Northwood and Benzie. Through late September, her best time was a 19:42. When October actually hit, her best was a 19:04, as Shellenbarger dropped nearly a 40 sec. personal best at Bluejay. Her next time on that course – 18:41. Two weeks later, 18:24. From September 28th 2024 to now, the momentum hasn’t much stopped.

Her Breakout Race

Talk about announcing herself on the scene. Gracie’s 18:37 to begin her sophomore season was a coming out party for sure. Early season ratings can be a bit wonky, as data hasn’t built up and athletes enter the season in varying degrees of fitness. That said, times on established courses do not lie. At the tail end of her freshman year, Carlisle had finally broke through into the 18’s at Portage. In summer conditions (I can attest to the humidity) on the early morning of August 15th, she laid down a 18:37, dropping nearly 20 sec. from her previous course best. That early season mark set the stage for faster ones when the weather better cooperated, such as her 18:08 to finish 26th in Division 1. Now we’re wondering what’s in store in another month…

Her Breakout Race

Back in her freshman fall, Osterhart hinted at the results we’d see in the future. She gained speed as the year wore on, racing to a 18:56 at the RCA Conference Meet. Perseverance was displayed as well, coming back with a 19:08 at MITCA after things didn’t go her way at MIS. Come track, they were hints no longer, as Osterhart presented herself as one of the better freshman in Michigan. That presence was best displayed at Region 12, where Oakley busted out (then) personal bests in the 1600m (5:11, 5 sec. faster than before) and 3200m (11:21, 3 sec. faster than before). That day led to three D2 Finals start lines, experience that surely helped her as she stepped onto the podium to earn three MHSAA medals over the course of her sophomore season.

Her Breakout Race

It’s tough to pinpoint with these consistent kids. Kaitlyn entered the high school scene as someone to keep an eye on, then didn’t even need a break-in period. Her first full 5k at the high school level was a 18:49, then she spent the rest of the season hovering in the 18’s, hitting that mark in her final six races. However, her inclusion on this list comes from track, and especially the 10:59 that was dropped in Davison. That sub-11 was nearly a 30 sec. personal best, one that proved Berg can run with the state’s best, as she did with her 13th place finish in the 1600m. All in all, the 5th fastest freshman mark, one that could set the stage for similar stories of upperclasswomen on these lists.

Her Breakout Race

I could get creative and point to a day where tough conditions presented themselves and true experts eyed Lucia’s talent. Or get creative and obscure about any random day. It’s impossible with Lucia, because I keep coming back to her ’24 State Finals performance. Hovering around 19-flat for most of the year, she popped a 17:49 to place 12th in Division 1, knocking out a 62 second personal best on the most important day of the year. She’s continued to show up in championships, earning another podium finish in XC (with a significant season best), winning an indoor title individually, and a team title with her Skyline teammates. With those prime performances on big stages, I’m confident there will be much more discuss concerning Lucia’s career.
